Why an adult man would like to see something named Barbie is beyond me, The quartering has reviews up and apparently according to adult American women in a post Amber Heard era, this film is nothing but a breeding ground for another attempt at misandry. What do I know maybe VARIETY is wrong ?

I loved the movie but I completely agree with you. Some people at my screening said at one point: “Isn't this a movie made for kids?” And in that moment I realized that if I were a child my parents wouldn't have allow me to watch it or would have been pretty pissed with the movie. That being said I’m glad I'm 26 😂 and was able to experience the movie.

Look, if a kid is mature enough, at least I believe an 11 year old can watch this. I took my 11 year old boy to watch barbie and he enjoyed it. After it ended I asked him how did he felt about it and he said that he thought the movie was about kids and it was mature enough and he didn't had any problems with it and he was happy that the movie didn't turn out as a general kids live-action cartoon.

I’m actually glad it wasn’t for kids. Because like in the movie, Barbie wasn’t there for the young girl it was for the adult woman who wanted to rediscover her childhood. The movie was made with people who used to play with the Barbie dolls in mind, and not those who are playing with them now. And I think that’s also important

Almost every old Bugs Bunny cartoon had jokes for kids and jokes for adults ( even the Simpsons does this a lot ) but the jokes for adults would fly over the heads of kids. So Bugs Bunny was a great cartoon for all ages. I'm seeing Barbie this weekend, so I'm curious to see how the jokes land.

The animated Disney Mulan movie literally had some dialogue or joke about "concubines" aka sex workers which as kids, COMPLETELY went over our heads but nowadays children's movies can't get away with that without the high risk of being cancelled or burnt at the stake. I saw some people complaining about Elemental being "woke" just cuz it deals with immigration issues and 1 character is "non-binary"! Go figure! Margot Robbie and Mattel are co-producers and maybe they just didn't want to deal with the headache and vitriol from angry, pissed off parents cuz some people and parents are more conservative and not as open minded as Sean is I guess. So they just decided to stick with a PG 13 rating and not "compromise" on their vision.
@JuanRodriguez-tf7fh

@@nikitamohan3390so "Beach You Off" is not even remotely similar to 'Beat You Off'?? Usually those older cartoons would sneak in adult jokes and humor but they would do so subtly Humor now needs to be in your face and parents are allowed to say, " I don't want my kids saying "I'll beach you off! No, I'll beach you off!" 🤪🤪"
@nikitamohan3390
@nikitamohan3390 Жыл бұрын
@@JuanRodriguez-tf7fh I looked up the definition of "beaching someone off" cuz I thought it was word play on guys beating up each other which is what some kids might interpret as and I did not understand the adult meaning of it cuz some adults were like "that's an adult joke"! It's a euphemism for masturbation or jerking off! Cuz Ryan's Ken is like "you can't even beach yourself off how the hell are you going to beach both of us" or something like that.

So I am a 37 year old heterosexual male and I absolutely loved this movie. It's not perfect but it delivers all that it meant to deliver and then some. Like you said, it's smart humor and requires a certain amount of moral integrity in order to be enjoyed. Also, while being a toy for kids, Barbie has been around for ages so most adults can relate just the same. This is why I believe it is no problem whatsoever to have this film targetet at adults. I would agree with your point if they made a Paw Patrol or a Peppa Pig movie like this. Hence I don't get the rather low score when essentially you are saying the movie is great unless you are a middle aged male dickhead or are too young to be the target audience of the film.

The audience for this film is so clearly for the people who grew up with Barbie. No kids nowadays relate with Barbie, they address this in the movie. That’s why it’s not for them. People my age and above are VERY excited for Barbie. People my younger sister’s age doesn’t care, because to them “Barbie sucks” and “Barbie is overrated.” While I do agree with the monologue at the screen point, I have to agree. Though not everything has to be an in depth exploration. Something’s are just supposed to be an observation, or a single argument. I feel that’s the point of Barbie. To get people who know the Barbie name; and then try to let them know the message of the film.

But yeah 13 and under probably won't get it. I was fine with that artistic choice of Greta and Noah. This movie was clearly targeted towards people in their 20s that grew up with Barbie’s and other toys from that era. It was advertised that way and from everything I saw it was made clear it would be that way so I don’t think it not being for smaller children should be a negative. As someone in their 20s I don’t think I’d go see it if it was a film made for children and didn’t have witty somewhat inappropriate jokes. I don’t think the movie is very over complicated, the movie really doesn’t need to be dumbed down for kids (again I have no children so I’m not saying I’m right). I loved the exploration of not knowing where you want to be and not knowing how to get there, especially since that’s a phase I’m currently in. I also love how it explores how women AND men can do amazing things together. I did think it got a bit long and the Mattel stuff was thrown to the sidelines. You did a great job of articulating what I also did and didn’t like about this film. Did like: set and costumes, Ryan Gosling, and some of the jokes. Didn’t like: Too many themes that weren’t developed and heavy-handed lecturing. I also didn’t like much of the messaging. First, motherhood was mocked or belittled through most the film in favor of career women, and I felt this way as a working-mom, so I definitely enjoy having a career, but I think motherhood is one of the most vital roles. They changed to more positive messaging at the end of the movie, but this felt insincere to me. They also made the men either stupid, perverts, or misogynistic, and I’m tired of movies that make the women perfect and the men incompetent. Also, the “Real World” or patriarchy was highly exaggerated and, pun intended, unrealistic. The current board of directors at Mattel has 5 women on it. Additionally, they wouldn’t let Kens be on the Supreme Court yet, to reflect the real World and discrimination towards women, but we currently have 4 women who are Supreme Court justices.

Great review man. It had some really good moments and wonderful visuals but the CONSTANT lectures just got exhausting. Even if the messages were good, they didn't make the movie any better. In fact, they destroyed the pacing. I miss 90 minute movies :(

I’m not excited for this movie at all honestly. I think the marketing has been either stupid or really confusing. I’ve been reading quite a few reviews that said the movie is deep and good but after your review I’m a little sceptical about that too. I’m gonna watch it with my sister probably this weekend and hopefully we enjoy it.

I'm not really sure where you're going with this. The movie isn't made for little kid and they didn't market as being for kids. It's rated PG-13, and the first two trailers sold the movie based on a 2001 reference and double entendre. From the jokes to the handling of the ideas, it's relient on prior knowledge. It's not meant or intended to be an on ramp. I took my 9 year old. Her comment after the movie was, "I didn't understand what everyone was laughing at most of the time." It's not because she's stupid. It's because the punchlines and commentary required knowledge that there's no reason she would have.

@SeanChandlerTalksAbout I was not trying to offend you. I saw a lot of movies that "weren't made for kids" when I was a kid. I didn't need to understand every joke or reference to enjoy the movie or understand the overarching message. I bet your kid still understand the majority of the message. If she found it boring, that's totally understandable.

I saw this yesterday. I don’t disagree with what Sean says about how some of the themes are tackled. It’s so strange because this movie seems like a shoe in to make a lot of money so it’s not like you weren’t gonna get sequels if you wanted them to go after the individual ideas more in depth. Unfortunately the movie feels a little bogged down sometimes

While I definitely understand your complaint that it’s not for kids (especially since you’re a dad) personally it doesn’t bother me. I kind of look at it like I would a project like Andor. Star Wars is obviously meant to be for kids and families, but a project like Andor is meant to be for the adults who enjoyed Star Wars as a kid. Again, I definitely understand why a dad wouldn’t love that idea, but I just tend to look at it from another angle.

Just not a good movie. It seems like this script was written to get across an agenda rather than to make a quality movie. Go see Oppenheimer instead, although that should have been made a PG-13 so it was more appropriate for teens and made more money at the box office.

This was an interesting thought path that I as a person who was sort of the target demographic, I personally miss on the point of agreeing with the director on world view. I personally was very concerned that it would be really preach-y on topics that I don’t feel need talking about. I genuinely was pleasantly surprised that though on the middle it felt that way, by the end I felt they had turned it on it’s head into a better direction mostly. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did but as previously stated I’m a 28yr old woman who used to play with Barbies and watched Barbie animations so I check most of the audience boxes. I do agree that it isn’t for kids really, teens sure but even them I’m kinda concerned about but that’s just from a societal standpoint. The jist is, I appreciate your standpoint and to offer a bit of mine for anyone who feels they relate more towards anything I’ve said.

Hi Sean, I rarely comment on videos but I strongly disagree with you putting the discrepancy with the target audience in mixed. If you take a critical look at political breakdowns in America, you can quickly find that parents tend to be more conservative that the average population, especially men. I further believe that the primary goal of this movie was to explore gender norms in the US above all else, a topic which many conservative Americans brush off. When you couple these things together, I think there was never really a choice to market this movie to children because their many parents would be outraged and feel that this movie is trying to “indoctrinate” their children, whether the message is positive or not. This shift would have alienated a large chunk of their target audience and generated public backlash among right-leaning Gen X.

I was really looking forward to go see this movie even as a 16 year old guy, since it looked like it was going to be a great comedy and a movie that would be appealing to all demographics. However, I’m not a big fan of the movie trying to tackle so many topics and making men seem like the butt of the joke, especially because modern-day feminism doesn’t really seem to have the best reputation. I’m still glad people got something out of the movie and enjoyed it, I just wish it was a movie that could be enjoyed kids/teens, and people who just wanted to see a comedy without any intense messages about the world we live in today.

@@chaserseven2886 I think the point I make is definitely still worth mentioning, and I believe you’d still have to understand where people are coming from when bringing this up. I’m not saying I’m super offended by message of this movie, it’s just I would rather not sit through a movie where it constantly pokes fun at men. Some will enjoy it and think it’s funny, and some won’t. I fully respect the people who want to see this film and the people who have already seen it and liked it, it’s just not my cup of tea. And I’m sure lots of people around my demographic would agree.

Without the respect, I do not understand why people can’t get that there are adults that love this brand and have lived through it changing and evolving many times over. This movie is clearly made for them and to empower young adults. And there is nothing wrong with that, adults need their fun too. Especially when this movie is clearly trying to bring to the forefront the 70s to 90s Barbie Brand, that kids today aren’t as familiar with.

It’s quite the double standard that a Barbie movie not targeted to young girls is a weird choice, but no one hesitates to let little boys watch any MCU movies, which not only have copious amounts of violent scenes, but also occasionally slip as many sexual innuendos and tackles social issues that would go over little boys’ heads just as this Barbie film.

I love how Barbie was both hilarious and emotional. So many scenes made me and the whole theatre laugh. Other scenes made us all cry. It was a really really good movie and the casting was perfect.
