I agree with half his point. Attacking people b/c they enjoyed something is idiotic and ppl shouldnt do it. However, sticking your head in the sand and acting like the culture war isn't happening b/c you don't like it, isnt helpful either. Disney brought politics and identity into the MCU in a very intentional way over the last ~5 years. Saying ppl shouldnt notice that and they should just continue to consume next product without criticism is kind of silly.

I definitely think that the biggest factor was just the premise of the film. The team up of characters that we really don’t care about never would have lead to a good outcome. The reason why the Avengers worked is because there was at least one movie (that was good) for almost every character, and the more minor characters in the film (Hawkeye and Black Widow) were expanded upon in the movie. We cared about all of the characters.

“Great marketing starts with a great product” is something Disney really needs to listen to. Sure, you can get away with great marketing with a crap product, but it’s so much harder. Marvel at its peak was so successful because they made good movies consistently, and fans trusted them to tell interesting and fun stories. The longer the streak of mediocre to bad movies and shows continues, the less fans are willing to believe it could be a great movie or show.

Reason #10 is just too real. And it’s not just with the movie scene. It seems that with everything, especially “geeky” hobbies there’s no room for nuanced opinions. You either like it or hate, and your identity is based on how you feel about “x”. It really makes me hesitant to call myself a fan of something when all the videos I see are either “woke Disney fails again 😂” or “bigots cry over x movie” Like you said it’s just so unpleasant and it makes it tiring to have actual discussions about the film without it turning into some damn culture war or “anti woke” crusade

Not fun to watch people on the screen who just told you how much better their morals are than yours. Who wants to be constantly preached at. In the end you might have a great movie filled with people who think they are so much better than you. They could be a little bit humbler.

@@ed36363636 no man I totally get it. Personally I’m all for including messages in stories so long as they are actually applicable to the story, character, and delivered in a way that isn’t beating you over the head. I don’t watch Scooby Doo so I can hear commentary on the patriarchy. That’s not the point of the show or the characters, which is why I didn’t like Velma. It seems that studios are more concerned about the message than the story. It’s a valid criticism but I think some people just push it way too far or exaggerate to where it feels like just beating a dead horse and even the critique itself gets tiring.

This is excellent, Sean. Brilliant and balanced. I wasn't a huge fan of Captain Marvel, but did like aspects of it, the 90s vibe and especially Annette Bening. I've been losing interest in Marvel for a while now, so haven't seen Ms Marvel or Secret Invasion. I thought WandaVision started out brilliantly but I didn't love the ending. Therefore, I don't have all of my homework done for the Marvel so I won't be going to see it. I even have an annual pass for Cineworld so I could easily go, just not feeling it. I also thought Thor Love and Thunder was terrible by the way, that and the Eternals just make me sad. I'm a huge Ant Man fan too (I know I might get flak for that) and I haven't seen Quantumania yet. It just shows my lack of interest now, in a series which I loved.

The entire point of the movies for most of us, is seeing our childhood hero’s coming off the comic book pages onto a movie screen. The source material is abundant and full of quality storytelling. They decided to throw it all to the wind in an attempt to push an agenda through our beloved hero’s. They wanted to push an agenda. So, they searched for something popular and getting the attention of everyone - because their agenda would get more views. They found it in Star Wars and Marvel. Now we have are left with destroyed characters, destroyed storylines, and destroyed faith in humanity. They used our love for something positive and inspiring - to tarnish family values, relationships between men and women, society’s view of men, and feminine women. This is not the stories of hero’s struggling through daily life while also fighting against the forces of the current evil situation. This is an activism propaganda brochure said through the voice acting of paid political actors. And we see it for what it is - not a movie. It used to be advertising was free and paid for by the advertising company. It was something we had to endure at the beginning of our paid for movie or during commercial breaks at home on tv. Now they expect us to give up our money to watch 1 1/2 to 3 hour advertisements on how they want to restructure our society. We aren’t buying it . . . the tickets, or their view of society.

I respect your opinion. Here is a thought experiment. Imagine a $300 million movie set in the Barbie Universe, but with no Barbies, just a few Kens being the heroes fighting a Ken villain. Say it is a "fun movie experience". Do you think that would sit well with the moms and daughters that loved the first Barbie movie? Would it sit well with female empowerment activists? Do you think they would show up to that movie? Do you think Hollywood would ever think about making that movie? Of course not, yet they basically made the same movie in The Marvels set in the MCU Universe, and are somehow surprised no one showed up. BTW, no one goes to the movie theatre to watch a "fun movie". They watch those on Netflix or Amazon, etc. They get in their cars, find parking, pay for overpriced tickets, popcorn and soda, get into a closed space with strangers for GREAT movies and GREAT movie experiences not capable of being replicated on a large screen tv. Saying it is a fun movie tells everyone stay home and wait a few weeks for it to show up on Netflix.

Even though I gave the film a negative review, I've been called a shill for saying it's fun. That's toxic...and pretty stupid. Monica Rambeau our amazing African American character has been Captain Marvel, Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum at various points in her rich history. who held the title and her powers was all Light based. AGAIN ignoring all her history in comics she has for over a decade. 3. Then the young Ms.Marvel which is a Inhuman NOT a mutant or some fancy bracelet powered kid..A third time ignoring all the comic history.. As a Comic reader from decades of reading these characters I am mad that the MCU/Disney ignored the history of these women and made them a dumpster 🔥. The writers a open Male Hating Feminist hired by Disney/Marvel. Is it to much to ask for a rich decades history based story? As far as Madame Web Trailers. This is not Madame Web of Marvel comic. This is some knock off spider woman theme. This is Marvel's Madame Web: marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Cassandra_Webb_(Earth-616)

What makes this box office so much worse is that I just read the book “MCU: the reign of marvel studios” and the reason they green lit the Incredible Hulk was because they believed franchise films perform around 100mil of where the previous one performed. The Marvels would be lucky to make 1/3 of the first captain marvel movie (377million).

The misogynism vs feminism discourse is not only tiring, but INTENTIONALLY disingenuous at best. Those claiming people hate the movie because it has girls in it: are we just going to ignore the fact that we all love movies such as Alien, Halloween, Terminator 1 and 2, The Help, Black Swan, Room, and other incredible movies with female leads that don't crutch on the simple fact that the film stars females? Are we also going to ignore the films we hated that starred male leads such as Incredible Hulk, Thor Dark World, Iron Man 2, Jurassic World Dominion, or literally any other critically despised movie with male leads. This isn't to say there aren't unreasonable people who hate movies simply because they star females. but to even attempt to focus the narrative around that inarguably miniscule population is silly. No reasonable people hate movies because they star males or females these days, they hate movies if they're bad movies.

That last point really resonated with the common audience. Movies are movies, they’re supposed to be enjoyed together by a common audience, not turned into some kind of battleground for opinions. Any movie that has that kind of connotation attached too it makes it nearly impossible to go and see because people really don’t want to deal with that. It’s like goddamn whether you like or dislike the movie, can’t we all just agree to disagree and shut up and enjoy the movies we see?!?!?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think you are an honest person sharing your true opinions, and I respect you for that. Here is my honest opinion, the culture wars you are seeing in movie reviews is a reflection of the culture wars that are actually happening in American politics. IMO, Disney is completely out of touch with their FORMER audiences (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, MCU, animation movies), as evidenced by not only The Marvels but also the previous Star Wars trilogy, the last Indy Jones movie and the current Wish. When Disney is supporting a third grade teachers right to discuss transgender and homosexuality in her class room in clear opposition to the wishes of the parents of those children, it no longer right to remain silent. IMO, we have lived in a world where the entertainment industry has been totally controlled by people attacking the core foundations of the American political system, seeking to shut down any honest discourse that may somehow offend a trans female or gay African American female. They are following a Marxist philosophy and playbook where only their side of the story has the right to be aired. And finally they are being called out for it. And no, it is not ok to look the other way and stay silent. IMO The Marvels movie was conceived, developed, produced, and marketed by group of woke individuals that had a spiteful hateful in-your face attitude towards the core MCU fanbase, and they got the audience they deserved. And all you have to hear is the commentary by the director and leads of this movie blaming out-of-touch MCU fanboys for the box office failure to know I am right (even after Brie told the core male MCU fanbase that this movie was not made for them). IMO, the problem is not super hero movie fatigue (GOTG 3 did just fine), promotion was not the problem since the 3 leads are NOT popular with Brie being cancer on the promotion circuit, and women not showing up for a female led action movie without a strong male character is par for the course (Charlie's Angels, Harley Quinn, female Ghost Busters, Atomic Blonde, etc). It is your second reason that points to the real problem, Captain Marvel wasn't popular as a comic book nor as a film character, despite the $1 billion box office which was nothing more than a bait and switch where people thought they would be watching Infinity Wars 2 before End Game. Disney execs saw the $1 billion Captain Marvel box office and just plain misread the room. They thought there was a massive audience for a female led superhero movie, inclusive of gay and straight women but excluding anyone that has a penis dangling between their hairy legs. The problem was there is no massive Barbie like female audience for that movie, and since they wrote off the core male fanbase by not including any male they could relate to, there was no one showing up at theaters.
@randomfeller
@randomfeller 10 ай бұрын
Captain Marvel was *never* popular. It was required watching for End Game or it would have never reached $1 billion. It was an explicitly bad movie and she was rarely sprinkled in other shows because it amounted to adding rat droppings atop your crème brûlée. Her comics don’t sell either. The best part of Captain Marvel is Rogue sucking the powers from her because Rogue is an infinitely more interesting character.

I think Captain America: Civil War is the best MCU film so far as far as bringing together multiple storylines and character arcs. It’s a true sequel to Captain America 2, but it’s also a direct follow up to Avengers 2, a Black Panther origin movie, and sets up 5 MCU films (Black Panther, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Infinity War and Antman 2). So it’s possible for a MCU to have a film to build from multiple films.

Here are my reasons why this movie flopped: 1. Disney+ exists- no one feels the need to rush out and see this. 2. MCU fanbase has become super toxic. 3. Too much MCU content - there were so many MCU projects this year, so there’s just fatigue. 4. Box Office overall is down. 5. You had to watch too many things to understand the plot of this movie - it really should have gone straight to Disney+ 6. Loki Season 2 finale the same night this opened and a lot of people waited to binge so they’re just more interested in that than this. 7. The reviews were not great, basically a B - so again people didn’t feel the need to see this. 8. Barbie and Taylor Swift were the female movies of the year and at this point there’s just not enough women who go to movies at the rate men do. 9. Marvel is making too many movies for women and this is just not this brand’s target market. 10. Secret Invasion was a massive misfire and as good as Ms Marvel was, not enough people watched it. And Photon was in a show that was almost 3 years ago and no one really talks about her. The MCU has gotten too big and it cannot service all of these characters now. Okay now I’m gonna watch the video and see how close we came.

Even with everything else going against it, this movie could have succeeded if it was a well made movie and both the critics and the fans loved it but that's not the case. The best thing people can say about this movie is that it was "fun", which means its a bad movie but kids and low IQ adults will enjoy it for its jokes, action and special effects.

You nailed it with all these points---they are targeting too small of a market with a property & characters that audiences are not enthusiastic for. That said, I sincerely hope they can figure out a good story & position for Iman Vellani because she's one of the few gems "post-Endgame." Forget the Young Avengers, add Kate Bishop to Ms. Marvel 2, give them a bigger story within the MCU, build the characters and their relationship with each other, and have them contribute to a greater central conflict. They also need to stop with the multiverse shit, it's overplayed, it ruins any stakes and consequences and suspense, and writers have no idea how to standardize the rules in a way that makes sense.

Some excellent thoughts there Sean. I personally passed on this one after having been a huge mcu fan and comic book reader and collector for many years. I can't speak to the quality or lack thereof of the film itself. I don't know that the actors going on talk shows wouldn't have done more harm than good for the bottom line. Every time Brie or some other woke Hollywood person goes on social justice rant, Nerdrotic, Ryan Kinnell, etc clip it and run with it ad nauseum in dozens of videos. One thing that I think you missed when talking about the culture war aspect is who fired the first shots in the culture war. The studios consciously decided to actively marginalize the demographic that has been it's largest supporter from the comics to the movies. They are not being subtle in diminishing the white male characters. The Blackrock mandated DEI initiatives try to elevate the women and minorities by pushing down the white male characters. They make all the white males either stupid and incompetent or evil. Examples: Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in the sequel trilogy and Indiana Jones in his most recent movie. They can only get away with that for so long before people start noticing and tune out. So the Marvels flops and Blackrock gives Disney a huge influx of cash so there are no consequences for alienating their most loyal and fervent audience. Marvel movies used to be events that I looked forward to for months before they came out. I have skipped several of them in the last couple of years starting with Eternals. You can say that there is a toxic fandom, but that doesn't take account of the extent that they have been attacked for simply liking the classic characters and stories that they had. Just like in the real world, if you try to elevate a group of people by pushing another group down there is going to be significant backlash. This leftist Hollywood social engineering only works when people turn up or tune in to see the product. Marvel and Disney in general have gone from bait and switch to no bait at all. Disney shareholders should file a class action lawsuit against the company for failing to meet it's fiduciary duty to earn profit. They have prioritized social messaging over creating a product with maximum broad interest in the marketplace. I would much rather watch Friday Night Tights for free on KZbin than go see the recent lineup of Marvel content.

I’ve always thought of the “superhero movie” as a pretty basic formula like in mathematics or science. You can stick to the basics with hero, villain, conflict, act one to three, stakes etc. Or you can add some extra layers/terms to the equation to make it more complicated. But it ultimately depends on what you plug into the variables and parameters like characterisation, character relations, medium expectations, style, themes etc that spits out a “solution” to the formula that hopefully doesn’t look like many other superhero movies seen before. And when it works, this solution can be more than the sun of its parts. But when creators end up putting the same tropes, archetypes and plot beats into the formula, they’re just not doing justice to the “genre” of superhero movies. Hence, “superhero fatigue”.

While I mostly agree with you on most of these things. I will say the strike had a bigger affect than what you’re giving it credit for. I know for a fact that the studios scaled back their influencer marketing because most influencers with significant following would not promote struck work. So most studios, scrapped influencer marketing. I know for one studio they actually had to let go of their influencer marketing head due to the strike. Now, would that have been enough to significantly change the box office? I don’t know. But the strike did not just affect the actors in the film. Studios had to pivot away from organic and paid influencer marketing to get the word out… which I think hurt them, but there’s no real way to quantify it.
