They really did a good job of making Barbie into something that could reflect the goals and personality of every kid that loved her. Housewife Barbie still existed, but so did Doctor Barbie, and Surfer Barbie and Lawyer Barbie and Farmer/Horse Rancher Barbie-- I could go all day. My favourite were the fashionista ones from the early 2000's, they really shaped my clothing style even into my 20's, I think. I have a skirt I still wear at 27 that I bought at 13 because it looked like one my barbie wore when I was 10 😂

Its why I never understood why Barbie in recent history has become such a controversial toy for young girls. She isn't meant to be a stereotypical women, she's meant to be whatever you dress her up as. And unlike disney princess dolls, Barbie actually does have a realistic body type, skinny women exist, it's just people think because she's never, until a couple years ago, had diversifying body types that she portrayed the message that all successful pretty women must have her figure. I don't think the original creator of Barbie ever intended that to be the case nor have I ever felt that way growing up with Barbie. Barbie is a toy meant to play to your imagination, she can and will be anything you want her to be and people tend to forget that.

Before watching the 2023 movie I never knew that there was hate from girls/women for her, I always thought that she was an icon for "being who you want to be" and for "persevering in pursuing your dreams". I liked the idea that Barbie is supposed to reflect who you are and who you want to be, the original self-insert story character but she has her own personality as well
@justanawkwardnerd
@justanawkwardnerd 10 ай бұрын
There was a "I hate pink" phase a lot of young girls went through, rather notable during the late 2000s and 2010s, and hate for Barbie and Disney Princesses was a big part of that. It paired with the rise of the "Not Like Other Girls" and hipster phase during the early 2010s. I think a big part of that was a lot of girls bucking against the mold of femininity a lot of kids kept being shoved in, and how feminine interests and girly things were just made fun of on a societal level, so the "I hate pink" thing came out of a response to try to protect themselves for being ridiculed for girly things, whether they ever actually liked girly or not. This is also where the Tomboy aesthetic can factor in.
@whaa6894
@whaa6894 9 ай бұрын

One of the things I had to talk about was how she’s a bad influence and stuff but I honestly think that the pros of her being able to do so much while still being feminine and cute far outweighed the fact that her real life shoe size would be a size three (US) and that therefore would “make girls insecure”

There weren't just baby dolls. There were porcelain dolls and paper dolls which were both early forms of fashion dolls, and Barbie wasn't even the first fashion doll by our standards. There was Lili, whose design was stolen by Mattel for Barbie, Madame Alexander dolls, and at least two others. And Lili wasn't a call girl like Mattel wants you to believe. She was an office girl who was extremely materialistic, and kids played with Lili and read her comic about her day to day life. The only reason why Barbie is the most popular fashion doll today is because she was heavily marketed, especially on TV. Check out MJ Tanner's deep dive on fashion dolls as a whole.

Actually, that's not entirely true. China and porcelain dolls were very fashionable and were just as often made to portray teens and adult women as babies. They had many clothes as well depending on how fancy. They were fashionable. I and my great aunt are avid collectors of antique fashion dolls and all of my favorites look like adult women. There also were many fancy dolls for young girls in classic literature, it wasn't a rare thing. Edit: most of the adult dolls weren't mothers. You had to buy the babies separate if they were china or porcelain. And deciding if the doll would have children was up to the buyer. So saying other toys were all to represent mothers is also false.

Barbie was very much not the first non-baby/mother doll. There were plenty of other fashion dolls like Little Miss Revlon, Deluxe Reading's Candy, Betsy McCall, Madame Alexander's Cissy etc. And on that note, Madame Alexander had a lot of dolls based on Fairy Tale characters like Snow White or Hansel and Gretel, she also had dolls based on Little Women and even Nurse dolls or dolls in army uniforms that all came before Barbie. What really sets Barbie apart is marketing, Mattel is just better at marketing, case in point how they made everyone think Barbie was the first non-baby doll when she very much wasn't.
@stefaninafla
@stefaninafla Жыл бұрын
Miss Revlon, Cissy and Betsy McCall waned in popularity as they did not update their fashion looks from their debut. So when Barbie came out with a modern look, she took that market share for lady dolls pretty quick.

The Business Barbie's "work skirt" could be turned around to become her "party skirt". The effer was annoying to turn back around to "work skirt" so mine was constantly ready to go out and have fun. I say it was annoying because once you had it on the "party" side getting it to sit right for "work" was impossible.

My grandmother herself is kinda like a Barbie in my opinion. She was working, and such back in the 60's and had her own shop. Though that might still be pretty normal, but one thing I also love is, she was kind of a fashion icon herself in our city. She was pretty much the first woman to wear miniskirts in our city. And she absolutely slayed it!!! (Saw cool old pictures of her lol.) She was also the first woman in our city to be the lead of a democratic group. And best thing, she's the sweetest and coolest grandma of all time.

@@leoparathesweekgeeky7244 Well, glad you asked! There was Cissy, made by Madame Alexander, in 1955, predating Barbie by a whole 4 years, Ginny and Jill, and Miss Nancy Ann, who were popular during WW2 (fun fact, the creator of Miss Nancy Ann had a deal with the U.S. Army to manufacture dolls for the soldiers to send to their daughters while they were away on the war). Hell, even Barbie started as nothing but a ripoff of the German doll Bild Lilli, also made in 1955. Mattel has done a great job of erasing history to place Barbie as a trailblazer, as evidenced by both this video and the comments.
@michellecruznyan
@michellecruznyan Жыл бұрын
@@danibilbocascanteall 3 you mentioned may have had more adult outfits, but they all 3 also had baby faces, didn't they? I think Barbie's adult face was what made it feel like she was less of a baby-doll, and hence why she became so popular that most of us hadn't even heard about the other 3.
@danibilbocascante
@danibilbocascante Жыл бұрын
@@michellecruznyan it wasn't just that, though. You haven't heard about those 3 not because they weren't popular. Mattel has done its job erasing them from history. Ruth Handler was downright ruthless (pun not intended) in trying to erase or minimize what others had done in the fashion doll industry before Barbie. Documentaries like the Toys that Made Us and interviews with Ruth constantly say that Barbie was the first fashion doll, and when they acknowledge Lilli it's to say she was an adult toy based on a call girl, which isn't true at all. She was based on a newspaper strip that was also popular with kids.

As that one kid who had almost every Barbie from the Barbie movies, I freaking loved the movie and the Battle of the Kens was legit like a snapshot of how I played my Barbies. Also, all my Kens were househusbands, my Barbies were badass witches with magic powers and jobs and were the breadwinners, and the Kellys were mischievous little shits while the Stacies were the shy nerdy kids and Skipper was the rebellious goth daughter. Also, a lot of my Barbies were gay cos I didn't have a bunch of Kens and some of my Barbies were trans cos if the head popped off, I would screw it back on and it made the shoulders look massive so I styled those Barbies like my Kens and boom!! More boyfriends for my Barbies.
