Streisand was the blueprint for post-war female singing generally. No one had more influence. Even now, when most female singers sing a ballad, whether they know it or not, they are channelling Barbra's approach and technique on some level.

She makes every audience shock at this moment. So difficult dramatical act, to cry, sing, perform, that much deep sadness, so much truth with the missing love in that moment she is trying to search at that theater in that scene. She stoped her singing to start searching her husband through the audience, but she continues after not founding him in a deep sadness recovering herself infront of that sad moment of the story of the movie. After it she strongly manage her sadness act until it ends She is PERFECT. AWESOME.

I can tell you that's true! My Mom took me to see "Funny Girl" when it came out. The audience in the movie theater were VERY into it, and mesmerized by Barbra! I can also tell you that my Mom had turned me on to Barbra at a very young age, so by the time "Funny Girl" hit theaters, I was a hopeless fan! Then, when we went to see the film, I was actually in tears within the first few moments of instrumental music accompanying the beginning credits! Before Barbra had sung a note, or appeared on screen, I was in tears to just the instrumental medley! I stayed in tears for a LOT of the entire movie, and still do, to this day. Someone might've already mentioned this but Barbra did want to sing this whole song live - if not every song she ever recorded in her movies - and they might've filmed at least one take live all the way through. I believe Barbra said she liked the live version but she couldn't convince them to use that version. It was remarkable that she prevailed on them to even try it and that they kept this hybrid version. Jaw dropping. LOVE your reactions!!

The one important thing I like about Barbra is that even in movies she chooses to sing 'live' as with this performance. No lip- syncing for her. She is a unique superstar surviving 6 decades & still making albums today. Check out her 'duet' ones, they are something. Even her 'Walls' album proved how diverse she is as it was a great album I thought, particularly liked the songs Don't Lie To Me & The Rain Will Fall. Yes, Barbra has been accused of being a perfectionist but if a song is worth singing it is worth doing well & only Barbra can move U & take U on a musical journey like no other. This IS why she won the Oscar for Funny Girl, it was a wonderful movie as well as the songs.

Great reactions and ones I share with you. I believe I read that in order to get the emotion of the moment, the director, William Wyler, asked her to sing this one song in the film, live. No pre recordings, which has become more and more extinct over the past decade. I believe, allowing her to do this allowed her to give us the performance of this short, Fanny Brice, song, (I think it was originally in French until Ziegfeld Anglocized it for Brice) that we all react so strongly to. This song, just to mention it, is not in the revival with Leah Michele, who is fabulous in the role and it stinks that she is not eligible for a Tony, though she may bring it to London so an Olivier is possible....but it is not in the revival as it is not in the Broadway version of the show, just the film and that was to do homage to Ms. Brice. Which they did, wonderfully. Cheers!

Some additional backstage info: Those tears that you see weren't produced by glycerin. Streisand and her co-star Omar Sharif had been having an affair during the filming of "Funny Girl". They both knew their love couldn't survive (for one thing, she's a Jew and he was an Egyptian, and during that period the tensions in the Middle East were every bit as awful as they are today; possibly worse). So when they were going to film this scene, the director, without Streisand's previous knowledge, had Sharif stand right next to the cameraman -- so Streisand was singing directly to HIM.

And on another level--a point you missed, perhaps not knowing the film and where this song falls--she is forced out onto the stage as a performer having just been told by her husband that they shall divorce, and Must Perform, so there is a tension in Being a Performer and The Devastating Heartache she is feeling. (which is the theme of the play: the incongruency between ones Personal Life and Being The Performer....and then, by chance, it is THAT song she must sing.(It was most likely recorded all live in close-up, then they reshot the end with her lip-syncing to her original performance, though it IS also normal to re-sing a line or two in the studio.)
@giovannimaggio33 жыл бұрын
This moment of the film is also very famous because it was recorded live, there are no additions of parts recorded in the studio, they shot the same scene several times, each time it was different, and in the end they chose this one, but everything is absolutely live. @BrettTwinSavage3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I am only a musical theater performer in my dreams (or the shower) so I only know what I guess. It must be a challenge to emote effectively when it has to be done so it matches the word placement and tempo of a song. In speaking scenes there is often an emotional cadence or tempo of delivery or exchange the actors are following. It mostly feels like a function of the writing to me (though not soley). Still, I’d think there’d often be some room for an actor’s wiggle there. When you’re acting to music, this word/emotion must hit right at this beat, and this word/emotion must start here and last until there, and these words/emotions need to be compressed here. It seems to me that having to express realistically within such confines must be difficult to do and not end up looking like high camp. Or maybe not...because I’m only theorizing and have no idea what I’m talking about. Obviously, that possibility has never stopped me... 🤷🏻♂️

I have to think that Bradley Cooper studied this scene when it came to the final scene in his version of “A Star Is Born” when Gaga sang I’ll never Love Again. Now I know that a big deal was made about how Bradley and Lady Gaga sang live in all the musical numbers in ASIB but did Streisand actually sing live over a prerecorded track for this scene? Is that how singers usually work in film?
@BrettTwinSavage3 жыл бұрын
In what we think of as typical musicals, it’s usually lip synched to a pre-recoded track. Most of Funny Girl is done in this traditional way. However, Barbra has always said she hates to lip synch because “I’m lousy at it”. I heard her say in an interview that she told director Willie Wyler she couldn’t create emotion that felt real and do something that’s “not real” by it’s very nature (I.e., lip synching) at the same time. So the first part when she’s crying is live. When the song revs up, it switches to a pre-recorded vocal track. In most modern movies that feature musicians/performers as characters the music is, typically, performed live and the final recording that we hear is created from that live performance (as was the case in both the 1976 and 2018 versions of ASIB.)
