So often when a company buys an iconic song for a trailer those responsible end up cutting the song up too much which can be really awkward and jarring. This is a great example of how to do it right. Sure the song has been cut, but very tastefully and in the flow of the composition we all know and love so well. Great work.

I don't care what the critics say and at Venice, I have a lot of respect for Alejandro González Iñárritu from Amores perros, Babel to Birdman and the revenant, and with Bardo despite being called "pretentious", this film will surely be very personal for Iñárritu. And with that, we look forward to it :D

I have seen the film in an early morning in Venice. It is not at all pretentious (I find the films of AGI usually pretentious, this time, not a single time, except maybe the end that is too long, and he seems to underline a little and being self conscious of what it is said is important.. but this is the only moment of the film) The way it is sold here, with a handful of tours-de-force, is completely the opposite of the film. I have never been a fan of AGI and I really, really am in love with the film, that I compare on sometimes with 8 1/2, or with film by Angelopoulos.... (that means a lot to me) So Netflix did not know how to sell the film, I guess, so they used only the tour-de-force (that for once, in an AGI film, are completely secondary ...)

I was lucky enough to see this movie on a big screen, during the Festival Lumière in Lyon (France), with a crowd and, most importantly, with Alejandro González Iñárritu himself. It was incredible cause unfortunately it will not be shown in French cinemas. Visually it’s stunning, the performances are great, the movie is surrealistic and eerie/dreamy. He told us that it was his most personal movie, and that only him can really understand what’s going on in it. It’s more like a sensory experience, he said that we should focus on the feelings we have watching the film, because this movie is all about different atmospheres, different feelings he felt, and that made sense to him, deep down in his mind. If you have the opportunity to see this in a movie theater, take it !

This is one of the few films where almost everything said about it is true lol yes, it is very personal, meta, self indulgent, and at times pretentious, but also unbelievably beautiful, universal, and transcendental. As a Mexican American (who once struggled with this “bardo” of cultural identity) and who happens to be an aspiring artist (also torn between staying home close to family or leaving to cities where I will most be able to fulfill my dreams) and who seeks truth above ideology or nationalism, I believe I was the perfect “reader” for this film. If you don’t find yourself subscribed to any of the items aforementioned (which, of course, is perfectly fine-this film capitalizes on the idea that art is truly subjective) this will not be the film for you. But I thought it was brilliant.

Holy shit the soldiers that wrapped themselves in the Mexican flag and jumped to prevent American soldiers from taking it is in this movie.¡Viva Mexico! Further context: they are Los Niños Heroes. They were Mexican military cadets who in one of the last battles of the Mexican-American war stopped invading American soldiers from taking the Mexican flag. They climbed to a tower, wrapped themselves in the flag, and jumped. It was a brave act of defiance against the colonizers who’d then steal all the land that became the American southwest. Never thought Id see that imagery in a newer movie so it caught me by surprise. But of course this is a Mexican film despite Iñaritu’s penchant for making American films.

I see no Lubenski this time around then. Cant wait to see it! I heard Alejandro clapped back at critics for calling him pretentious

One of the best scene was the one where he confronts the immigration officer who is clearly 100% indigenous Mexican but wants to be more American than the Americans. We get the same thing in the UK. People here will recognise the names of people in the government: Patel, Braverman, Cleverly, etc.

Sometimes art is cultural and can be difficult to truly feel it or follow it because you lack connection. It's valid and happens all the time. I'm sure that many reviewers of this film can't see past their own worldviews and may miss what AGI was going for. They want an easily digestible story with lots of big name stars and not something that may need to be dissected and researched, etc. 🤷🏽♀️

Feels like Alejandro G. Iñárritu bitten by Terrence Malick and Leos Carax.
