Great review. The thing about Bardstown and other higher priced Whisk(e)y in my opinion is It’s an experience. If you are gunna drink pay over 100$ for something you should make it a special thing for more than one person because then the price is easier to justify. It really is a lovely experience and paying larger sums is about paying for that experience. If you can sit down with a few people and all appreciate it then it’s no different than going to the movies with those same people which prolly costs around 30-40$ per person. If you can get those people to all bring a drink after they are in the hobby now all of a sudden you have a fun tasting experience where you can blind flight and compare and contrast and really hone in on your palette and what you enjoy.

Catching up on older episodes I missed. Have held off on the Discovery Series due to $140 price. But I just found the Disco Series #7 for $119.00 and bought it. I also bought a Bardstown Collaborative Series bottle, which was the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Bourbon. A little pricey at $170, but love Bourbon County Stout. Nice to see the Bardstown Origin Series will be using their own distillate and is in the $45-$50 range.

Totally agree with discerning the difference between rye spice and proof. I don’t get the rye on the nose but it says hello on the palate unlike any other Discovery Series to date, in my opinion. A good offering, but definitely a try before you buy. Don’t go into this thinking it’s gonna be your typical BBC Discovery profile. 6 put BBC back on par, 7 was a nice change and welcomed red fruit forward addition, and 8 is a sneaky expression with prominent rye notes if I had to sum up the last three batches.

Smell, taste, etc. certainly varies for everyone, but my son and I did a blind with Bookers Lumberyard and Knob Creek 120 because they are both from Jim Beam and we both preferred the Bookers without hesitation. The KC drank hotter for sure despite its slight less proof. I got the Bookers for $91 which I think was a fair price. I personally like Bardstown Disco #6 more than Collaborative Series KBS. Just my two cents.
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
Your 2 cents is def worth it! I do have a fondness for Bookers and absolutely loved the Bardstown batch but the lumberyard just didn’t do it for me. Granted it was only a 1 oz pour so for a true opinion I would need to get into it a bit more.

There is a point, and I am sure it is different for everybody, where there is dramatically decreasing marginal returns. For me, the quality jump from a $12 bottle to a $25 bottle is enormous. Likewise, the jump from $25 to $50 is significant. But the jump from a $50 to a $100 is pretty minimal. I can't think of many $100 bourbons for me that I would prefer over 2 $50 bottles. The strange thing, though, is my soft ceiling for Single Malts is much higher. I can drop $200 on a Dalmore or or some of those duty free exclusives of Glenmorangies and still find value it. Why I think this is strange is because I am a bourbon man. I prefer bourbon to scotch and consume anywhere from 10:1 to 20:1 more bourbon than scotch. Maybe because most scotch is so much more delicate than bourbons? I hadn't really thought about it until this moment.
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
In my down time I probably drink bourbon first than scotch, Irish, rye, Japanese in that order. My consumption of scotch to bourbon is probably pretty close and the others much less. I haven’t added an expensive scotch all year. Been collecting some excellent 12 yr single malts.
@Abby_Normal_19692 жыл бұрын
@@slbdrinks - before covid, I traveled internationally at least once a year, sometimes more. I always hit the duty free stores. 1L bottles at almost haft prices. Not so much anymore. My Scotch reserves are dwindling.

When at Nulu, did you happen to try the Toasted Barrel? I have seen it in my local market lately, but don’t think it will be around much longer, but at around $75 I have been hesitant to pull the trigger. In relation to your comments about what people are willing to pay for bourbon, I am one of those that like to keep it around $40, but have gone as high as $85 for some special bottles I have seen, but generally wouldn’t spend over $100 on any bottle unless I come across something that is highly allocated that I know I couldn’t get without paying secondary prices.

I just can’t do it with them these days. I’m a huge fan of Bardstown, even made it to the region finals in their Worlds Top Whiskey Taster contest. But the past few discovery release just don’t stand up to disco 3 and Disco 4. Disco 1 was hot disco 2 was bleh, disco 3 and 4 were BTAC level bourbon. Disco 5 was a dickel mistake. disco 6 got a bit better but was still dickel. 7 started to get better but Canadian. I have high hopes for 8 but the past 3 have really not hit the mark
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
Sorry you haven’t enjoyed those particular releases. Wondering is it the “odd ball” whiskey additions to the blend that’s bringing you down?
@bourbonbasement2 жыл бұрын
@@slbdrinks the dickel in 5 and 6 was definitely noticeable. 5 it was overpowering, 6 was more subtle but still noticeable. The Canadian in 7 carried a heavy corn sweetness. I’ve been noticing a lot of their recent releases, such as 7, 8 and both WTWT releases have included it so I’m sure there’s something special that I’m missing

I typically pour my scotch and wait a minute for each year of the age statement. So, waiting 10-12 minutes makes sense to me. I love single malt blends and the high ABV is certainly something that raises the price. If this was a scotch at $140usd....I would pass... I have not been in the US for several years and it is amazing to watch these bourbon whiskey expressions and the price tags folks are hit with. For $140us...I can get something amazing here in a single malt. I do not have access to whiskey bars....What would a pour of this cost at a bourbon bar? I have unicorns that cost me less than $140usd... Great video.. Trenton and you are great together on camera... I just do not have access to the bourbons you all have. I will say I have no problem spending $100-150us on a single malt... Maybe, I cannot get a pour to test it out...But, I do my homework by watching as many trusted whisky reviews as possible on line. If Ralfy or Roy give something a high score...I pull the trigger without any hesitation. Great job...
