Thanks guys, I always enjoy you fellers. On the PVW15, I actually had a serious health scare a year ago and because of that I paid secondary for this. At the time I didn’t know if I’d be here or able to drink this year thus the extravagant choice. Two good things to report; 1 the scare turned out to be manageable and 2 the Pappy is just amazing. The only problem is now I’m going to be around for many more years and need a backup bottle (half left). 😜

I am glad you were able to get one, ESPECIALLY at retail. That being said, every time I see a Pap review, I always wish they were on the blind. "Here is a bourbon, what are your thoughts" especially if they are lined up with other BT offerings on the same mash bill from $40-$160. Its human nature, the anticipation and emotions will bleed into it and make it subjective. But at the same time, perhaps that is part of the "total package".

My buddy got a bottle of Pappy about ten years ago as a batch he got from his grandfather's will.... He's not even a whiskey drinker...... I flipped out 🙃 when I saw it on his shelf and asked him for a drink, he happily obliged and once I gave him the story, the bastard put the bottle away after drinking, and not back on the shelf, I assumed he'd probably sell it...... I thought he would sell it, really, but to my surprise, he still has it, and pulls it out every time I come over cause he knows I love it. That's a good friend.

Just seeing this episode... and it made me remember that I got a bottle (the 15 year Family Reserve) for a Christmas gift back in 2008 or 2010! It has been in a box, in my storage unit (part of a much longer story) since then. Unfortunately, I now realize that there was an imperfection in the bottle top, and I have lost a bit to evaporation... I was saving it for a special occasion. The product lost is about equal to the two tasting pours that you did for your bottle. The lesson learned here is this... don't wait for a special event, make the event special by opening the bottle! It's always nice to live and learn vicariously through your experiences. However, if you know the whiskeytuber (Scotch) Ralfy, his rule of thumb is "A minute in the glass for every year in the cask." It took you guys less than 30 seconds to put your noses in. I'd be interested in your experience if you actually let it sit for the 15 minutes. Also, I'd be very interested having it in a blind tasting. There is so much research that shows when people think they're drinking something super special it substantially affects their perception and experience. As you guys well know, you've been surprised on many occasions when a favorite didn't quite stack up in a blind tasting. Anyway, keep up the good "work."
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
Yes I try to watch Ralfy as much as I can. Trent loves to open nice bottles on camera but that does eliminate the chance for the whiskey to sit in the glass. To be honest I think I prefer the 10 yr over the 15 but would need to do a side by side.

Around 2008 I worked in a big booze store in Indianapolis. Back then, no alcohol sales on Sunday. One Sunday, the boss took the staff to KY. We had a private tour and tasting at Buffalo Trace. We chose two barrels from the tasting for bottling for our store, which was great. We visited another distillery, whose name I can't recall, where we entered an ancient barrelhouse. We tasted a 40 year barrel straight up, right there, dust in the air, sun streaming through the window. It was like we were in a bourbon commercial. (The uncut whisky was concentrated from Angel's Share and too dirty to rate.) During an employee tasting back at the store one day, we tasted Pappy. I don't remember the age. This was before the fire and price jump, but it was expensive. I didn't like it. Thought it was way too hot, with the added taste of fire and nothing else.

Always a great show. I would not go over $300 for it only because I have only seen a bottle once in last 5 years in my state of Pappy and never seen a Weller. Too many great bourbons out there to over imo and really for $300 I am buying Barry Crockett

I can remember when most all of these allocated bottles were on the shelf. I regularly had Old Rip, Blantons, Eagle Rare, EH Taylor with no trouble. Do you think the days of sanity will ever return or is this whisky economy now permanent? I suspect so many people are benefiting that it will never go back to the way it once was. I used to hold out hope that the bourbon fad would run it's course and the regular bourbon consumer could once again have access to the good juice.

The only way around a supply & demand problem is to up the production, and from what I have seen, most producers are content with the size of their operations and don't see the need to put large amounts of money into expansion. The big exception is Buffalo Trace, which has made it clear they're putting a huge amount of money into expanding to help meet the demand. But the result of that is years away. What I would at least love to see happen is for the allocation system to be fine tuned. It doesn't make sense to me why we in California have the regular Buffalo Trace everywhere just sitting around collecting dust on shelves for $20-25 but we can't get any Early Times Bottled in Bond, and it's the reverse in other states. Lousy for both consumers and producers leaving things that way, as one example.

Please do this blind with other Wheaters. The Old Rip, Pappy 15, OWA W12 WFP. Larceny BP, Old Fitz, You may be surprised how much your eyes on the bottle help the experience.

I’m also very interested in this. Or pappy vs poor man’s pappy

Just became a patreon and subscriber! Got into bourbon a few months ago and love your channel. I also just won a pappy 12 in a lottery. Have you guys tried the 12 yet? Cheers!

Congratulations! I have only tried the 10 and 15 unfortunately. Thanks for joining us!

I live in Canada, have access to many of the same whiskies you do, but while I’ve definitely heard of Pappy, I don’t expect to ever taste it, let alone have a bottle of that. Having a chance to try more than one vintage is less likely than time travel.
