A quick video where I talk about the pros and cons of bare liner ponds and rock and pebble ponds. If you want to see how some of these ponds and various components were built be sure to subscribe and check out my other videos and website ozponds.com
For those wanting to check out the different types of liners Imentioned in the video. Below are some amazon links so you can see the price difference. If you make a purchase I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

Bought a house with a pond that I assume was abandoned, it has what's got to be a decade of sludge in the bottom which took up easily half of the total volume of the pond. Currently in the process of cleaning it out and thinking I will add pebbles and rocks to the bottom, I don't like how the bare black liner looks like a black void in deeper areas. But your videos have been a great resource in rehabing the pond and understanding what I out of the pond going forward

Great video ,just what I needed. I am going for rocks and pebbles. I bought some plastic trays from the Internet described as under gravel filters. I am going to put them down onto the liner in the pond.. Then I was thinking about putting weed liner over the plastic ??? Then put in the rocks and pebbles and I have a bit of sand too ??

I don’t know about the sand. But then again I’ve never tried it.

For sure. i've never found any difference, so long as you filter for the bio load. And by filter I mean however you filter, rocks, sand, pumps, beds. I prob learned that in glass and fish :)

Have you ever made a grey water recycling system that ends in a pond for fish?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
Kind of. All though the water doesn’t recycle. I run it through a wetland and then into the pond behind the nursery. There’s currently lots of tadpoles and other life but no fish. Because that pond overflows I don’t want to introduce any fish that wouldn’t naturally occur. I think everyone especially those on septic would benefit from running the grey water through a wetland or bog and the discharge onto the garden. The black water can also be done but it’s harder to get approval.

Hi Kev, I’ve been watching your videos for ages now as I’m getting ready to put a small eco system pond in,all diy. I’m in Vic as well and as it gets up too 50 degrees in the summer I’m worried that rocking it in will cause it too get too hot. Have you had any issues with this? BTW thank you so much for all the information you have provided, I havnt been able for find much about ponds in our climate and country :)
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had no issues with the water getting too hot because of the rocks. The water does get quite warm in the more shallow ponds. So to keep the temperature more stable the deeper you can go the better. Also ensure plenty of water aeration over summer. Higher water temperatures hold less oxygen. Hope that helps 👍

@@Ozponds Thank you for your fast reply :) I’m going to wait for this summer to pass before completing it but will be investing in a couple of air stones for extra oxygen for next summer plus I think I’ll add some shade

@@Ozponds I thought about it but for the extra few hundred in cost probably not but since I'm having a bare liner with stone block walls and only stones and pebbles in the regeneration zone and not the swim zone I considered it for a bit. But I think I'll look for gray maybe. Unless my husband wants pebble printed liner.

@@Ozponds I really like the teichschwimmers there's some good English versions of some of the videos but I watch even if I don't understand what they say all the time. I'll probably do a combination of the two. But have more moving water than a teichschwimmer. But after some research I am considered no plants except maybe a few in the cavity of some cinder blocks I'll have at my edging but I will try the whole thing no plants first. I was trying to make it complicated because I wanted rill/runnels instead of a waterfall but have a gas line in the way. So I'll leave that part for another season maybe. I got too caught up in thinking I needed somethings fancy or crazy and 😟 what moves up or down and where so I'm resorting back to simplicity which is exactly what it's all about, something we can enjoy rather than manage constantly. I like that I can add to the setup later if I want, add bog filters in barrels or a waterfall of rills and troughs someday. But I'm curious to see how clean it will be with no plants so I can gage for myself if we want plants or not. I won't be using any large rocks, bare liner, bags of gravel and cinder blocks and paver stones for capping everything at the top of walls and the largest stones I'll use are for my regeneration areas I'll make them like the pagan butler way but like a teichschwimmer too with the bags of rock as walls and aquascapes by putting in larger pipes and cleanouts.

😂 Really? No seriously I wouldn’t feel comfortable. I’m just a hobbyist. I did want to do this professionally but I’m not very good at interacting with people. That’s why I have a wholesale nursery, just me working alone. If you are serious about getting help there is a certified aquascape contractor in Malaysia I believe. I think his name is Jack. I can’t seem to find his details but if you leave a message on the aquascape find a contractor page they will put you in touch with a professional- aquascapesupplies.com.au/find-a-contractor/. I hope that helps and I wish I was comfortable enough to help you myself. Good luck 👍
