I think you're right, the E-Z chrome looks like a good product for large straight pieces like the Corvette rocker trim or maybe a 70-72 Monte Carlo rocker molding. Everything has it's place, I use Bare-Metal foil for large pieces and the Molotow pen for little tiny pieces. Good video !

Looked like bare metal foil is easier to work with but the chrome shine on the ez chrome seemed brighter to me.The ez chrome looked more realistic,at least to my eyes. So, like others have said, I think both materials have a place when building model cars.As I have learned, its just a matter of knowing what to use and where to use it which comes with experience.Thanks for the vids you produce.Much appreciated.

There was a foil product on the market with the Testor's brand on it it. The foil was very thin but highly adherent, much more so than Bare Metal. It was really good for small details like wing glass frames or door handles but you had to be careful because it knotted up and tore easily. Just curious if it's still available, used to get it at Hobby Lobby. I took a brush from some cosmetic stuff my wife was tossing. It has semi rigid plastic bristles and was shaped like a mini toothbrush. It was great at pressing chrome foil into surfaces that were etched or had fine seams.

I think both will have a place where they work better. The thicker EZ might be better for the top window trim, where the BMF gets rubbed off if you pick up the car a lot. (If you don't clear over the BMF).

We've all had BMF that refused to stay where we put it. What many modelers recommend is heat - just a light pass or two with a blow dryer set on "LOW." It has worked for me in the past. Another trick - use a clean cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the area to be foiled. Let it dry and then foil.

EZ-chrome might work best on pre-painted larger scale die-cast in at least 1:24 scale. Based on the effort you showed peeling it from an unpainted plastic model, I wouldn't attempt to use it on a painted one. Regarding BMF, I always by mine directly from them. I have had issues with adhesive, but it's less likely to tear in spots you cant see on the sheet. I've had that happen as other people have already mentioned. I also work primarily with 1/64 cars. When adhesive is an issue I brush some acrylic clear in the area, leave it to set overnight, then re-apply the foil. After reading the sentence I just typed, maybe I need some other form of therapy. But I hope it helps you and everyone else reading this. I've been using BMF for around 40 years now. Despite it's occasional faults, I still think its the best product around.

The best thing to use when applying Bare Metal foil is to use Micro Metal Foil adhesive. Instructions say to put it on the foil. The way I have always done it is I use a brush to apply it to the chrome trim I want to apply the foil to. I put it on the trim and let it set for a few minutes and it will tack up real nice I then carefully lay it on and press it on with a pointed tooth pick and a cotton swab. Then I just trim it off. This way has always worked great for me. I hope this can help others and hope my tip here will make it a bit easier for others to use. As I said, it has always worked great for me.

I have learned when I need new Bare Metal Foil I get it straight from BMF. That way you know it’s fresh and he ships it in a way that it does not get wrinkled. Also, trim 1/8 to 1/4 inch off each side before using. When the adhesive is applied it generally does not make all the way to the edge. Also I use one blade to cut the foil for use. I have a dedicated foil knife for trimming the foil on the car. And for you guys that have trouble with it sticking, keep your model clean!! I know when I get to foiling my hands sweat because my mind is telling me all the ways I’m going to screw it up! The sweat raises the oils on your skin and while holding the model you get it on the car. So I have wasted a lot of foil before I figured that out. Good luck guys, be patient, stay calm and model on!!!

I've never used EZ Chrome, but just recently received a sheet of NEW, IMPROVED BMF Chrome, which is supposed to be better (haven't tried it yet). Bare Metal also makes an ultra bright Chrome. I have a suspicion that the level of adhesiveness decreases with age, but that's just a suspicion 🙂

David R Lentz, Dublin, Ohio USA This is a delightful service to your viewers. Thanks. I also agree with your assessment. If EZ Chrome’s makers improve the adhesive backing, they may have a winner. In addtion to its smoother finish-which is what especially draws my interest-as well as being brighter, I expect that a heavier gauge metal would be less vulnerable to tearing. Now that would be a practical aspect, above and beyond any issues of aesthetics. P.S. I prefer addressing people by name. I am uncertain, though I have read in your channel someone addressing you (I think) as "Matthew". Is this correct?

I just use that cheap aluminium ducting tape from the hardware store. There's no way I'll pay nearly ten bucks for what is essentially a piece of kitchen foil that doesn't stick all that well when I can get a huge roll for pennies and sticks like hell. It looks just as good and is easier to work with, doesn't tear like BMF as it's a bit thicker. For thinner stuff I use kitchen foil and a tack stick of glue.

Which store did you get the ”New improved chrome” labelled foil from? Seems like it’s gone. I also had this new, thick version, but the problem was not so the lack of adhesive but the thickness and stiffness if the foil. I believe it is nit necessarily old stock, but just cheaper to produce.

When getting bare metal foil, you have to make sure it's the " new & improved chrome" . The normal chrome is old stuff, and little to no adhesive on it. I've made the same mistake. Don't get ultra bright chrome, or the chrome. Has to say new and improved.
@Anonymous1999b
@Anonymous1999b 3 жыл бұрын
They (BMF) don’t have the ”new improved chrome” any more. I have asked a couple of suppliers about what’s going on, they have said this ”Chrome” is their current chrome product. Unfortunately, as also seen in the video, it is much thicker than the ”new improved chrome” and also prone to wrinkles. It’s also hard to cut because now you cannot just let the knife lay on the foil, you have to really press it. Also harder to use in narrow places because of thickness and poorer adhesive. So even if BMF is still usable in easy parts, it is almost unusable in tougher places. Really hope they return back to the quality of New improved foil. Until then Alcklad is often the better option.
