New archer, love the barebow style. this video is just perfect, there is so much going on when new that you forget a lot of small stuff that make a difference. Thank you! PS: the chickens are awsome! :d

Very solid... I think that struck a great balance between giving all the explanation necessary without overcomplicating anything. This will be a great place for new archers to learn and seasoned ones to come for a refresher. Excited to follow along!

My brain fully understands all of the concepts behind this. My body however just laughs at my brain! I am coming back to archery after a good few years off and although I was expecting it to take a wee while to get back up to speed it is taking longer than I'd hoped. My issues are mainly flexibility and stamina related at the moment but it is good to get reminders of the core ideas again, and pointers to help. I've been enjoying your channel since I started back, really in depth information, but still managing to make it accessible for new archers is impressive. Good job on that.

Thanks Jake, great refresher for those of us who followed your NTS Olympic form series. Can’t wait for the bare bow specific content. Thought it might be worth mentioning a couple of pain points that I wished I knew about that might (or might not!) be useful for this series- a high wrist grip with stringwalking has been near impossible, too much change in bow pivot point, low wrist grip much more consistent bow stability. The other one… slightly different aiming heights when stringwalking and field shooting - how should we aim at different heights - use bow hand or tilt from the hips?

This was so extremely helpful! My stance was always closed and I could never figure out how to turn without turning my hips. Plus that breathing thing really help me get into alignment and get that elbow where it should be. Before watching this I was inconsistent about that elbow getting back and I never gave thought to where my chest was and how it would affect that. Thank you so much!!!

Jake, one of the best videos you've done. Nice work. I like the reference to diaphragm breathing and how the forward weight comes from posture not leaning.

Been doing archery since March 29th and shot a 564 at 50m barebow today in the wind and rain. Haven’t moved to a mag rest and plunger yet but it’s on the cards soon. Fingers crossed for 600 in the next few months. You’re videos as well as the coaching I’ve received have been invaluable

Very helpful. I bought the Tyler Benner book over a year ago and implemented his advice. However, I could never turn my upper torso without turning my hips and knees and in the end it made the whole shot cycle much less stable and caused me to waste time and effort readjusting my hips while at full draw. So I dropped the open stance and switched to a neutral stance ie 90 degrees to target or parallel with the shooting line so my hips were always over my feet. But, I just tried the tearing the paper towel with your feet trick in front of the mirror and my hips stayed over my feet like magic. Also, the tension it introduced into my legs made me feel more stable all round and felt good as a counter balance against the big bow arm push towards the target. I think I'm going to put the open stance back into my stance as a result of this, but will test out tomorrow with the actual bow. Thanks for the info.

Hey Jake! Very nice series! Also, talking about posture, hip rotation and things like that, I reeeeally recommend you to watch some shotokan karate postures. They are exactly what you're teaching, and there's a lot of videos about it. Check for Heiko Dachi and Hangetsu Dachi foot stances, and the hip/glute of Kiba Dachi. Maybe this could contribute to new perspective ways to see all of this. Thank you a lot for your contribution and work! Cheers from Brazil!

Hello Jake. Great video. My name is Stéphane, I live in France. I starded on olympique style recurve almost two years ago and my wife just started archery, shooting barebow style. So, I have a question for you about posture. What about the "pelvic retroversion" ? Thanks a lot, have a nice day.

Thanks again Jake great work and really helpful. Just a detail I wanted to clarify. With the sunken chest in set position, should this also move the shoulder girdle forward at this point. Been trying to engage the scapular more in the draw and seemed to be struggling to retract it through the draw as it was already fairly retracted from my set?
@ProdigiousReturn Жыл бұрын
Why do we want an open stance? What’s the advantage? I naturally want to do a closed stance with my hips and shoulder pointing at the target.
@santhiyapei55703 жыл бұрын
just a short anatomical note: whether breathing with your chest or abdomen, both are "diaphragmatic" breathing. it is physically impossible NOT to breathe with your diaphragm. the question is merely whether you constrict or "drop" your chest (as you're doing here) thus relaxing the abdomen and allowing the belly to move more, or doing the opposite, engaging the abdominal muscles, lifting the chest and thus having more of a "chest" breath. yes, you can increase range of movement of the diaphragm and depth of the breath. you can also unconsciously limit yourself to shallow breathing in your upper chest (which can cause anxiety). no, you cannot breathe without your diaphragm (unless you're on a respirator). secondly (and unrelatedly), I was just watching a video today of you competing with Ukrainian archer Viktor Ruban, and I noticed he anchors with his thumb behind his occiput. this is the first time I've ever seen someone do that. I tried it (without a bow) and it feels interesting. what's your opinion on this? thanks & btw you're awesome!!
@scottk.36362 жыл бұрын
Your reply should include a better way to drop the upper chest and limit upper lung expansion while promoting a forward lean. Tricks that control and limit the diaphragm aren't anatomical blasphemy.

Great explaination Jake, as a barebow archer i've been looking for this series. I think NTS is a great system utilized biomechanics of the body. I've question about the knee position, do you lock your knee all the way back or keep it straight and relax. i'm feeling a lot of tension in rectus femoris muscle as i keep my hips still while twist my torso if I lock my knee back. Thanks in advance..

how to handle the neck? I have to rotate my head so much, that i am running into a limit
@stephenericwalsh3 жыл бұрын
One thing that you may want to address in the series is the difference between the pressure points in barebow grip as opposed to Olympic recurve. I feel that there may be a slight difference because the anchor is further to the side with barebow and hence the angle into the hand is slightly different, which to me would suggest you need a slightly different shaped grip on the bow. I guess it's not as much of an issue for Jake because you have an unorthodox anchor for barebow, much closer to Olympic style. Anyway, I may have raised an issue that is not an issue and just a personal problem.

diaphragmatic breathing is used in singing ..Mr Jake explains it well but a quick search will show plenty of techniques.
@kirillf.80533 жыл бұрын
I wonder. In your previous videos, you've said that it might bad for you to have your weights closer to a lower limb pocket. But it's the second video which I've noticed that you have only one weight in this same exact place you've been pointing to. How come?
@JakeKaminskiArchery3 жыл бұрын
This was my wife’s bow and the small amount of weight in the main stabilizer bushing isn’t enough to keep the bow balanced, but she can’t handle more weight. So putting it down low keeps the mass weight low but acceptable balance.

People always tell you to open your stance, but I haven’t heard a single compelling reason as to why. Sure, tighten the core and stabilize the stance, but why not stabilize in your lower back? So long as the platform is rooted and the thorax stable, why must the stance be open?
@mcdougles3 жыл бұрын
Nice, but explain how to do it when you are standing with one of your feet is higher/lower that the other or you stand with closed legs or on one leg only...shooting up/downhills.

I dig my feet placement out on field courses so they are level, if on rock find what’s most comfortable and stable.

sounds like you should look up howard Hill for the type of archery you speak of..John Shultz - Hitting 'Em Like Howard Hill is a kool vid on the old ways...Very different to modern techniques where shooting standing on 1 leg is not a requirement in many tournaments..)

@@JakeKaminskiArchery i built a few WA/IFAA field courses, where you couldn't make your feets to same level. :-D "One feet" I meant most weight on one feet only.
@mcdougles3 жыл бұрын
@@middleagedshred nope. On a well built WA track you can find a stance where you have to stand with most weight on one feet. Thats what I meant with one feet.
