Thanks for a great video. How amazing the tradition of how a family remembers or honors the passing of a loved one. I must agree with Jill. The best way to see and learn about a place is to simply wonder and take time to smell the roses. I have found some amazing things by random wondering San Fransico. One of my favorite vacation destinations.

Thanks for the update and being up front about what you know and what you don't. Many of the things you are considering takes months of planning and it's informative to hear how you are approaching these "opportunities" :). Sounds like June, July, or maybe even August delivery especially considering shipping to the Med. Now you are getting to the Med near the end of the normal season. Maybe you consider another venue closer to the equator if the delivery extends beyond midyear. I'm considering a new Cat purchase next year. HH Cat was at the top of my list but when I saw the disaster with Jason and Nikki I reconsidered. It would be nice to visit the Philippines but I don't want to spend months sailing and waiting there while major repairs are completed. After watching your channel and some others, I have decided to purchase an aluminum Cat. Portofino has so many wonderful features. What I'm starting to realize is that the boat building industry is plagued by the same problem as other industries which is there is never is a shortage of great ideas but using those ideas to create a reliable, timely product is the true challenge. I love the Portofino design but if the company can't tell you when the work will be completed this far along in the boat building process, I would be supremely worried about their ability to deliver a reliable product. A few weeks back, I sent Portofino two emails using an address that I got off their website to start talks about a potential boat purchase. Something so basic as returning emails doesn't seem to be working. I'm hoping for the best with your new Portofino 52 and will be following your adventures this year. Thanks for the update!
@barefootdoctorssailing85679 күн бұрын
Hi Jim, I am sure the delivery date will not extend too far as they are already at the painting stage but with all the new systems and the shipping delays from the Red Sea being blocked it has been difficult for Portofino. WRT the emails, unfortunately Raffa gets about 100 emails a day so just cannot answer every one and he is looking at larger premises to increase production as he is booked out for about 3 years... I suspect he needs a PA do do all that admin stuff and send out the brochures and specs etc but his focus for now is just to build a few boats before he gets too many more orders. Send me an email to jmcinsth@tpg.com.au and I will forward it to him if you are seriously wanting to do something with them.

HI Charlie, yes - that is what sailing is often like too! Weather uncertainties, arrival times never known for sure etc etc...
@jaysonbowerman1159 күн бұрын
Man! Tuff Minds to indeed hold all of the uncertainty, so much to admire in your calmness amid it all. As Americans keen to start a sailing adventure in the Med, the Schengen problem in a big logistical hurdle. The channel Sailing Helios found a convenient loophole by checking out of the EU in Monaco and staying on their boat as “Crew”. They can go ashore, but not overnight on land. With two younger children in our mix this cheat code might not be available to us, so Montenegro looks vital to our planning efforts. Kotor also seems to be the temporary resting place of many Australian vessels who have abandoned the sailing dream, interestingly.
@barefootdoctorssailing85678 күн бұрын
HI Jayson, yes the Schengen is a real challenge. We did get a one year visa in France with the argument that we were buying a new boat and needed the time to fit it out and spend a lot of money there... It was a hassle and needed medicals at some point. We are now trying to get a 12 month Italian Digital Nomad visa and will see how easy that is - you mainly need income of more than E25K/ year from online work and find an address. Other countries have that DNV too. Turkey, Montenegro, Albania, Tunisia, Morocco are the obvious places and they are talking about a visa for yachts crew but this has not happened yet.... When are you looking at starting?
@jaysonbowerman115Күн бұрын
@ - Thanks for that information! We too have investigated the Digital Nomad Visa, but are hoping to take a complete break from work in 2027-2028 to focus on a sailing sabbatical with our boys before shaving, soccer, girls and video games take over their lives. Our “king for a day” plan is to buy a boat in late 2025 or early 2026, spend a summer season in the Adriatic to Ionian in 2026 getting to know and shaking down the craft, then return to the boat in 2027 to work up our passage making skills moving through the Western Mediterranean before delivering the boat to the Caribbean, spending a season there and selling in Florida in Fall 2028. Montenegro seems to be the repository of many Australian owned boats and they have pushed back Schengen entry until 2028, so a good place for us to look for a well equipped late model, though it’s mostly FPs and Lagoons, not a single Leopard there. I’m more than a bit trepidatious about how crowded the anchorages in Croatia and Greece are, but seeing the ancient sites is top of list for my wife and kids. We’d consider purchasing in Turkey also, though that would mean a lot of upwind miles and hiding from Meltemis, from what I’ve researched. Do you think sailing from Turkey to Montenegro during Summer over 50-60 days is at all reasonable? Venice to Perveza is, in theory, a mostly downwind season. Im curious if expedition Barefoot is already under contract? I saw that she was for sale last year, briefly.

Here’s the episode where SV Helios explain how they were able to stay in EU waters indefinitely as “crew on their own vessel” after checking out in Monaco. Obviously the vessel must leave every 18 months to avoid VAT. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnmsgpKEhZeXoK8si=DJHpEZW9UJoH3R6u

Hey John and Eli (and Jill! 👋), it's great to have yet another episode to watch this week (I know you still here in Aus. I'm not sure I can catch up with you in February. I'll let you know closer to your dates - please contact my brother Graeme should you wish to sail during those dates). My apologies for yet more questions this week...It seems that almost everyone likes to cruise Turkey, and your videos show an amazing culture, food and lifestyle to be envied for sure. But I must ask: Do you suffer from anchor anxiety when you leave your boat? What anchor does the Leopard use/supply their boats with? Will you choose the same for the 52? As you may know, I have been following RR2 exploits for some years now and more recently (for possibly the last 18 months) they have expressed some concern over their ability to anchor securely each and every time they drop the pick. Of course, good anchoring technique (and rode length) must be used to secure your boat well, including knowledge and choice of bottom type, etc. They seem to have got the right system set up now with their new cat, but still suffer from anxiety - I can't remember which anchor they use (Delta?) and I'm not asking you for advice to solve their issues. But You and Eli never seem to express any concern about leaving your vessel unattended. So I just thought I would ask which anchor you use. On another note, I'm curious about Turkey's tiles which you showed on sale in the shops. Would they be for bathrooms, etc or for use to protect wooden tables, etc. Do they supply them all in the same style? How does the tile sales system work? Or are these just for use on boats as plate/table protectors, etc. Please fill in my knowledge gaps on this cultural phenomenon. Fair 💨's and following 🌊's... (Edited for spelling).
@barefootdoctorssailing85679 күн бұрын
HI Garth, as always thanks for your in depth comments! In relation to anchor anxiety, we have a 40kg Rocna and very seldom drag. We reverse on to it with progressive force to ensure it is sound and then sleep well... Delta anchors come with leopards and they do not hold well at all! When we are away from the boat for a full day, we always get nervous coming back to the boat and then breath a sigh of relief when she is still there... On the PF52 we are hoping to have a link to our phone to get an alarm if the boat moves while we are off her so that should be fantastic! The tiles they sell are for floors, walls, kitchen tops or any use as they are glazed and can take the wear. Mostly those sort of things are a fixed price and not negotiable but if you buy many you may get a better price. It woudl be sensible to find out real tile price from a large store with advertised (labelled) pricing so you know what you should pay though as an opportinist salesman may bump up the price as they see a foreigner... There are many different shapes and styles so you have a huge variety of choice... Hope that helps.

@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Oh Wow thanks for all the info John. Yes I watched your episode that showcased the electronic set up for the 52 and how anchor alarms specifically could be sent to your phones. Great stuff. I ask about the anchor more for others benefit who may also be watching other channels, but thank you for the very specific information in reply. I admit to being fascinated by the tiles, they look very pretty. Turkey's stores are so different from here. Enjoy the shine up in QLD at present! Ciao.

Your new boat should be test sail next to the factory for at least 3 month. Small and new company, new design, it is 100% guaranty that you will have several bugs that need fixing. Don't rush them. Give them some time to make it right. They don't know what will go wrong when they launch the boat. They will need time to work all of the issues. You are buying a custom made boat, it is a prototype. You should plan something else for the next summer. Otherwise you will end up like the Wynns with your new boat in a boatyard for month.

Thanks, Serg! Fortunately Portofino has a service agent in several places in Italy and lots of associated partners from Genoa down to Rome. So we do think we will have lots of support glitches to be fixed. Should they arise…
