This technique isn't possible where the surfer's feet extend over the end of the board. If you put your knees on the board your back foot stays where it is. One way or another there is only one way to get to your feet from the prone position on ANY surfboard to standing one foot in front of the other. 'Your back knee must go to the side'. This is most easily achieved by rolling your foot outward first. It's about human anatomy and it's very frustrating if we get it wrong in the beginning. Your video tutorials are great but I do think this one is a bit lacking. Cheers ☮

I think one thing that people need to realize is that the board glides, and stays level while it is gliding. When a board is standing still, it’s very tippy. If you lean one way, or the other, it will fall over. But when you’re surfing, and you’ve caught a wave, the board glides. Think of it like a bicycle, and the difference between moving and not moving on a bicycle. So once your board is moving at a reasonable speed, it’s pretty stable. Your footwork does not have to be perfect. You can place that back foot a little up to help leverage yourself up to the full standing position, if you need to. If leaping up all the way works better for you, you will still have a moment to adjust your balance, move your feet into the right position and settle in for your ride. There’s no reason to rush. But if you have bad habits, like what they say here, looking down, being stiff, then everything feels rushed, unbalanced, and unstable. And you’ll fall over. So it’s like with many sports. Make your moves with conviction, but there’s no need to rush. When you’re going to pop up, decide and go. If you hesitate, then you are lost.

Thanks for this. Is there an important step that you don't mention in the video? It is clearly shown at 0:29 where the woman keeps her hips low and moves them backward toward the tail of the board. This brings the the shoulders over the knee and keeps the centre of gravity low until properly on the wave. For a long time, I couldn't work out how to get the front foot forward enough but now realise the body moves backward to be positioned over the front foot. Is that right?

Hey Gavin. What happens as we bring knee to chest and plant our front foot in between our hands is a slight twist if the hips. This allows us to keep our body low and makes it physically less demanding to scoop that front foot up and place it centred in between our hands. Without a twist in the hips, your hips will square, your back will arch up and it will be a lot more physically demanding/ challenging to get that front foot where it needs to be. Hope this answered your question & helps you in the long run :)

@@barefoot_surf Thanks. My comment was 8 months ago and your video helped me to pop up. I do it more naturally now. I am 6'4" and have been using a 9' board. Today, I tried out a new 7'6" minimal. It was interesting that some of the old habits of arching the back during pop up came back and I struggled to get my front foot into position. I need to consciously think through it again.

Please clarify something for me. I have heard before and as you state on this video that the front foot should land “between” the hands. However, all of the animations and the live demonstration on this video appear to show the front foot landing significantly behind the hands ? .. correction , with the exception of the video of the guy in the pool. He gets his feet between his hands.. but the others don’t seem to.

It's normal to have the front foot more or less one foot behind the hands. Check out this video of pros popping up in slomo (if you haven't seen it already) kzbin.info/www/bejne/joq9ZWmYfMuNZpo

Hello, thanks so much for your help. I have been surfing for about 7 years but an accident kept me out if the water for an extended period. I figure maybe this time could help me get alot of my bad habits corrected. But I pop up with both feet at the same time but its not always consistent and where my feet land is also inconsistent. So wound you recommend changing my pop up and is this common or easily done with muscle memory kicking in? Thanks again for your insight, mucho helpful 👍

@middleagedshred 3 жыл бұрын
@@DR-bd4wq Landing with both feet on the board at the same time is probably the most optimum way... you are doing well to be able to do that... some pro,s land like that and some with barely a split seconds difference between the back and front foot landing...pros adjust their foot positioning as they ride, back foot farther back over the fins for sharper turns..a little foreward for speed..I would say work on landing both feet on the stringer consistently and knowing where your feet are without having to look.
@MrJMHP
@MrJMHP 3 жыл бұрын
@@middleagedshred ... The majoraty of advance and pro surfers land there feet with a split seconds difference. Only on step and hollow waves they make to land there feet has fast they can. If you land correctly your back foot then your front foot will land on spot between or close to the hands. That's the best way to make a smooth takeoff and easier to bend your back knee so you can carry more control and speed on the wave.
@middleagedshred

@@MrJMHP Just saying to Mr DR that if he already has the dexterity and core strength to popup planting both feet at the same time it makes no sense to try to relearn a lesser technique and refine his popup instead...they say it takes twice as long to re program muscle memory than it does to program it...i,m no expert..my popup is terrible. I,m just going by thousands of other comments on the chicken wing technique...Kelly slater himself said the chicken wing technique is horrible. In saying that, it is a qwik way for people to be up riding but too slow for slightly steeper waves.

Depending on how heavy you are, you might not have a choice unless using your knees. Ideally, you want to lose weight.

Hello everyone, I am learning to surf. I live an hour from the ocean so have to practise at home a lot. I have a lot of problems popping up. I have set up my surfboard at home on a winch so it moves forward when I am popping up. My question is the best technique I have found for myself is to move my left foot first (Im a regular stance) then my right foot. I can get up ok with this at home but not in the surf yet. Will this technique eventually work or do I need to learn the chicken wing first? Thanks in advance.
