How to Duck Dive

Is your Board Small enough?
Surfboards with a lot of volume are very difficult to push underwater. Sometimes, it might be better to use the turtle roll technique with big surfboards.
Paddle Fast to Gain Speed
Speed is key. You need forward momentum to be able to go all the way through a wave, or else it could push you back.
Start 2 Meters Before the Wave
Timing is key. You want to start duck diving when you’re about a surfboard’s distance from the wave. Going under too quick means you will resurface too soon, and going under too late means, you won’t be able to go deep enough before the wave gets to you.
Sink the Board’s Nose
After grabbing the rails, lean your body over the board & use your shoulder’s strength to push the board down & forward underwater.
Sink the Board’s Tail
While keeping forward momentum, bring your board parallel to the bottom by pushing down on the tail with your knee of foot. You can lift your other leg up like a scorpion to put extra weight on the tail.
Bring your Body to the Surfboard
Once your board is deep underwater & parallel to the bottom, bring your body to your surfboard.
Resurface
After the wave passes over, you start pointing your nose toward the surface, the board’s buoyancy will bring you up.

As far as I know, no duck dive with foam boards... Get to a regular board as soon as you feel confident enough.

You can certainly practice in a pool. However, just remember you need speed and paddle power to properly duck dive under a wave.
