This is AMAZING and soooo important to the history of American athlete culture!!! I started skating 14 miles a day several times a week from Huntington Beach pier to Balboa Pier and back no problem ....in my 20s in the 90s. Now I am 56 and desperate to get back into it. I miss the feeling of flying untethered and now I can listen to all my 80s music. The mental health component that inline offers is equal to the cardio workout..and everyone my age who skated in their 20s so many now have high BP, diabetes and obesity. Inline burns 500 cal. per hour /jogging burns 700. Skating is 1000x more fun than running and easier on your knees. I am SOOO happy to start skating again and it's already making a huge comeback, (esp sine pandemic) and now with the engineering of off-road skates, speed skates, inline will see a resurgence of skaters like me, my era.....GEN X.. and inline will become the NEW "old" sport that finally gets the respect its deserved all along. The other part of Inline that hasn't been pointed out YET...but it will in time... is that the OG INLINE SKATERS of the 90s/early 2000s were the founders who laid the foundation and future of PARKOUR athletes we see today!!! Mahalo for sharing this terrific film!!!

As someone that has come back to skating after 20 years in the bodybuilding industry. I am VERY happy that it’s underground. BBing used to be but now it’s trendy to do contests in one of many divisions. Long live doing what you do because you want to do it. Not because you think it will make you part of some group. Anything you want to do in life to a high level has folks that are as committed as you are.

This all just makes me love Inline skating more. The passion that the surviving OG skaters have for the sport that kept it alive. To think that the hate is what drove it underground, but that very hate stemmed from what appeared to be jealousy and mass panic from the skateboarding industry. Why did they panic? Because they were threatened. Because a sport that possibly could have become even bigger than skateboarding was born, and that scared them. I hate that the professionals aren't receiving more support but I can't help but admire them for what they do. Inline skating 4 life

I'm new to inline skating in my thirties, and I think the biggest issue is that rollerblading is associated to aggressive skating and the look all of guys practicing it at the time. A lot of new people coming to the sport later in life are drawn my freeriding and youtubers like Bill Stoppard(he's the one that got me into it), who can finally see that inline skating is not only about aggressive skating or having an attitude like that of a rebellious kid, and most of older newcomers don't give a shit about X-games. I do think that the industry will increase, but will do so based on fitness and freeride skates.
@corneliusparkin24016 ай бұрын
Thats because aggressive inline hasn’t been seen for what it really is! Skates allow us momentum into moves and a dissipation of force when we land. That’s why parkour needs to roll when they hit the floor. Skates allow us to stay on our feet. The actual tricks have very little to do with skating. Rather is a game Of body balance keeping connected to the grinding area. How I see it is if your body is open enough and functional enough to do aggressive skating. It is a great expression of the physical form. However, if your body is tight and stiff. Not only does it look like crap. It will also lead to injury.

I used to own a pair of rollerblades back in the late 90's as a child. lol I learned how to roller blade fast going forward and backwards, and I would just ride up to and jump off of random things. (like 2 stair sets and short patio drops, nothing special) Eventually I got into skateboarding in the mid 2000's and skateboarded from like 05 to early 2010's while growing up and going through elementary school to college. I remember one time in 2009 my younger brother bought some blades at a yard sale and had a short blading phase that was no longer than a month. (he skateboarded as well) He would blade while we skateboarded random spots and schools, and I remember he easily rolled up to the 11 stair at Sylmar high school and jumped off it with his blades. lol I guess a lot of skateboarding chops (balls) can transfer over (And vice versa) if you're already solid at the other sport. Ive always liked blading, biking, and scootering too. But I know how much of an asshole skaters could be back then when it came to other extreme sports. But I always saw it as: Who the heck wouldn't wanna learn how to bunny hop on a bike, who wouldn't wanna learn how to do a tail whip on a scooter, who wouldn't wanna do a 360 off a big drop on roller blades? So that's exactly what I did. That's why I could never hate the other sports, there curiosity was always there. Just learning how to bunny hop and wheelie was enough. Learning how to 360 and ride backwards fast on blades was enough. Tail whip on a scooter was enough. But skateboarding was my true forte.

I think the hate from the other "action/extreme" sports comes from the perceived lack of difficulty when tricks are done on roller blades. Basically, the thought process is that it's strapped to your feet. How hard can it be? And Skateboarders pride themselves on that grind and just keeping at it while a people stop Skateboarding cause its hard.

come on man i know it was more of a stall but they had limited tech then they were not setup for grinding properly and its actually impressive the early grinding even though it looks lame in the style department. like when they started realizing front side grinding and taking out the middle wheels to aid in that grind. The early skates though never had soul plates and soul plates where desinged once rollerbladers realized they wanted soul tricks as well.

Imho, rollerblading suffers a fatal inherent flaw: they are attached to your feet. It makes it a lot harder to develop a “let’s chill downtown and skate” culture. I know bladers will say they have that… but as far as I can see, not so much. Hard to pop into the store and grab a drink in between hitting the 6-set outside the way skateboarders and bmxers can. Because of this, it seems to be a mostly skatepark-only sport outside of professional video parts. In 30 years of life in Boston, a major US city, I have never seen inline skaters chilling outside at a non-skatepark area doing tricks somewhere even once. Literally have never seen that ever. I used to see tons of them at the skateparks though. On the other hand, I see skateboarders and BMX chilling all the time. It’s because you’re strapped in tbh. Fatal flaw

It didn't happen like that. Skateboarding companies were in dire straights at that time because of the popularity in inline. Inline was far cooler at that time, more speed more air more stunt-like tricks and skateboarding companies were feeling the impact, it had nothing to do with inline skaters 'biting' their style etc. Skateboarding companies literally went on crusade of shitting on inline to try and make it look uncool and gay. It had nothing to do with culture, the only culture skateboarding has ever really had was the dog town days, which now doesn't really exist. They've taken their culture from everywhere else, rock, metal,punk, grunge, ska, hip hop, surfing. Take all these elements away and all you have in a bunch of kids skateboarding. 'Inline' needs do develop its own culture, what culture does it really need some new genre's of music or fashion etc. The problem isn't culture its because inline went so underground and has been for so long its invisible, young kids today probably don't even know what aggressive skating is. All it would take is a cool new film that reaches the masses where inline is shown and represented well. The inline skating industry is tiny, it has no way to market itself to the general public.

The motto "Destroy all girls" might be the cringiest attempt to create a shock value and/or an attempt to be edgy. Skateboarders is not the cause of your downfall, sometimes we have to look within ourselves first. At the end of the day, even if it's considered extreme sports, Skateboarding, BMX, and Inline is competing with each other. We hated each other back then for no apparent reason aside from we are kids and we want our shit to look cool than the others. Don't act like you're the only culture that is being judged based on the sport that you're in, everyone of us, skateboarders, BMX, etc are judged from people outside and within the sport. You don't have to be an expert in fashion industry to know that putting a slogan "Destroy All Girls" on a tag of your products is going to ruffle some feathers and will get misunderstood by other people who's not within the culture, and even then, people within the culture hated it (some). It's stupid to use the reason "we don't know anything about the fashion industry" to justify using that motto on the tag of your T-shirts and you could also apologize for the misunderstanding and not for the motto alone but you didn't which makes me conclude that he only reason that the motto was there is your attempt to be edgy and/or gain shock value. With regards to the Big Brother magazines, these people has their own issues within themselves so don't take personally and think that they hate skaters, look at what happened the the Corey Duffel interview. Part of the reason, I think it's the biggest reason, why Skateboarding thrive is because it became mainstream. Now, it's no longer skateboarders putting money in the industry, but all other people who doesn't skate as well which contributes the survival of the sport that it is already in the Olympics. Also, just because something becomes mainstream doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad at the same time just because a thing is underground doesn't necessarily mean that it's good. Skateboarding has no way to go but to become mainstream, you can't stop it. Part of the reason is the shoe brands. Skateboarding, as seen by other people who don't skate, is cool and the best way for a person to be associated with the culture or at least to make them feel that they part of it is for them to buy a pair of skateboarding shoe which they can wear it casually not just skating. This bring tons of money in the industry which contributes long term to the sport. X-games didn't cancel Inline skating because they don't care or some people hated it, it's not the sport itself but it's a question about is there a money generated by the sport. If skateboarding or BMX isn't bringing in revenue, they would be cancelled as well. Out of the most extreme sports out there, Skateboarding is arguable one of the most easiest extreme sport that someone can associate to even if they don't skate. Instead of playing the victim, why don't you guys start thinking for the longevity of your sport and not blaming others for your downfall, but if you're already happy of where you are then that all that matters. As far as I'm concerned, Inline skating/rollerblading is still alive and it still has potential of resurgence. Playing as a victim or calling skateboarders "jocks" (whatever the hell that means since jock technically means a person who is enthusiastic to a certain sport/s, so in a way, you guys are the biggest jock) won't bring money to the sport. You want to cultivate the next generation of skaters with that mindset, I don't think the sport will thrive, but it will survive though.

When I was still skating and we're filming, we always have this one guy who rollerblade and one guy who BMX and we always include those guys in our video and made sure that they have their own parts.

Rollerblading literally raised the X games and generated the most money out of all of the sports involved. if someone like Arlo is saying that skateboarders on the X games panel X'd rollerbladers out then that is what happened he was literally rollerbladings spearhead at X games and was one of the main TV announcers. if you look at the wiki page for X games rollerblading barley gets mentioned even though X games basically took off because of rollerblading like literally X games owes majority of its success because of Rollerblading so when someone like Arlo is telling you what happened then you need to stfu up and listen dork. X games was a rollerblading dominated event in the day that basically let the other sports into the club and then got X'd out of its own club. The other sports used to complain because the courses were always designed more heavily for rollerblading as it was the main attraction. I know i actually grew up watching it and was in the sport because of that impact. Rollerblading really is the underdog it was even all the way at the top and when it got shunted from X games it was no longer on TV which had a massive snowball effect backers and brands pulled out over night and we currently see those effect in turn still today within the sport. We went from generating the most revenue out of all extreme sports to being massively pushed into a dark corner with no recognition. Today we are very niche because most of our icons are old and there is not much new generation of new skaters coming because we don't get enough exposure. Rollerblading also started its decent right on the cusp of the internet boom so if you realize the impact of this in that Rollerbading is not documented very well online although it has a rather massive collection of media on VHS and also DVD i would almost say its "VHS/DVD" era has more content than skateboarding for those that know but those are kind of lost to time because there was not much preservation done. Daily bread magazine which was around for like 30 years also had lots of content which is dead to time now because they are no longer around. I still have lots of my collection from the Mindgame era which was the second golden era by way of the new generation of that time and you should look it up because it really showcases the sport in which you think you know about. this generation of kids the second era i am talking about. These were some of the kids that grew up watching X games. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYTJg2CJaNmmrq8

I think you have a point about their attitudes. I was around 13 when Hoax 2 came out and even then I thought the "skits" and party scenes were annoying. All those minutes of reality TV fights and skanky girls (I mean, the guys were no prizes either!) at parties could have been filled with skating instead. I still liked the video and still skate, but there's only so much that you can act like a prick and not have people turn on you or your industry. Arlo even mentioned in an interview a while back (jump street podcast maybe?) that he was playing a role of edgy douchebag a lot but it took him some time to realize that to the random people he meets, they don't know it's a role and he's just being an asshole. I had the same problem when I was young btw! I'm glad everyone, bladers and skateboarders too, have matured and for the most part everyone seems to get along now. Although I wonder how much of the hate was a west coast thing. Here on the east coast in the 90s I never really felt like there was some kind of hatred between bladers and skateboarders.

Aggressive skating was the wrong direction. Flow skating is the future. See the stuttering skater. Roller skating 🛼 is probably bigger than skateboarding and rollerblading and it's not trying to be cool. They just want to dance or flow in their rollerrinks. If you try to insult roller skating those skaters won't care because it owns its dancing style. Had rollerblading not tried to be about being extreme it wouldn't have fallen so hard.
