It was really gutsy to put such a trite, juvenile, corny line into a song destined for the top 40. In Beatles parlance it was "cheeky." When you hear the line you admire the courage of the song writer and it also fits with the image of the BNL as a borderline novelty act. The fact that the song made it to the top 40 only solidifies your admiration. On top of that, the line works well with the footloose and fancy free world the rest of the lyric has built. All of that combines to make it a great line, in addition to the funny, whimsical face value. An analogy would be Andy Warhol making a high profile work of art out of soup cans. The soup can itself has limited value, but when placed in the context of Andy's ouvre and placed in an art show, it becomes something more, and made Andy a star.

"Pinch Me" was, I think, the last song to be written for the record. I wrote it up on the third floor of my house, just feeling a bit melancholy; sometimes you look around, and things are great, and you just kind of feel down, and there's no reason for you to - you have an inability to appreciate your surroundings sometimes. That's what I was trying to get at, some of the boredom of pristine suburbia and the potential lying under every yawn. I had a basic framework in mind, but couldn't finish it off, really. It was a hard one to write, because of the sort of quick singing/rapping; I was so scared people were gonna go, "Oh, it's like 'One Week,'" which it isn't. But I was so paranoid people would think that that I almost didn't write it. ---Ed Robertson

listening to this out of pure nestalgia. I'm a senior in high school and everytime I hear this I will remember the amazing educational dean I had in school. I remember coming into his office for eschool every tuesday and thursday. this is one of the songs he would play in his office as he worked it had a very inviting vibe there. he also held the board game club which to me was the best club I've ever been in. I will never forget all those times we played cthulhu wars and used his own expansions. every game with him was full of chaos, intensity, humor, and laughter. I just wish I had joined in more of those games. He was also one of the only people in the entire school I could have a conversation about cthulhu mythos and understand. he even let me borrow an encyclopedia on it for a bit even though he got it from someone very special to him. he was very understanding and unlike any other dean I have ever come to know, he always solved problems right away rather than looking into them later. if he sees this comment someday I want him to know just how grateful I am to him he was fun, understanding, kind, generous, and even tolerated my playful smack-talk during dodgeball club and belegarth, which I admit I tended to get carried away with.

This song just came on and the timing couldn't be more perfect.. hits hard for so many reasons.... But now that my 10&12 year old sons try to make me say "underwear" all the time -- and packing my car to leave town only up end up back where I started but better than ever & full of more self love than I ever imagined made my eyeballs water really a lot 🥹💜 So grateful for songs such as this one that kept me going then, and keep me goin now 🙌💚
