My Dad's name was Al. He loved this song. Even after he got dementia, he'd still tell people that they could call him Al. This song means a lot to me.

@arribaficationwineho32 It was a long, hard road, unfortunately for my Dad. I had to become his guardian. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's, and that turned into dementia. He was a beautiful man and didn't deserve the suffering he had to endure. It is the little things that mean so much after losing someone dear to us . Thank you for sharing. It's nice that after all this time, this song still means so much to so many.

Songs and music is nourishment for the mind, body and soul. Notice how happy you feel dancing? 1 of the reasons of course is your angels laughing at how silly you look with the movements, like how we laugh at babies dancing for the sometimes unco-ordinated movements (^ _ _ ^ )

I grew up listening to this song and it still gives the "good feeling'' i used to get listening to it back in the day.. It just has this groove that just makes you move and nod your head subconsciously.. This song has probably the most recognisable, catchiest tune out there with the brass sections in the chorus and the slap bass line. I wonder how old Paul was in this video though coz he looks young! The video concept was really unique, goes with the weird lyrics.. and the appearance by Chevy lip sinking and doing funny stuff just makes it even more hilarious.. A real classic this one 👍🔥🔥

They’re young men with college degrees now, they have careers, are falling in love now, and they live on their own. @@Trevor-08 Absolutely! Lyrics matter far more to me than the instruments. Tori Amos intentionally hides secret messages in her lyrics with her own made up language. Trent Reznor is so much all about the lyrics that I suspect he has hidden versions of his songs and maybe new songs one can only find if his clues are followed. I was a fan of poetry first and then music in the 1990s. I've heard song writers say that some of their lyrics are nonsensical but I suspect that can be a lie. Trent said his song Closer is about smoking crack but in it he refers to Rasputin's claim that the more sex you have the closer you get to "god". Rasputin probably used that idea simply to get laid but Trent definitely used that to compose his song.

The part where he sings "You can call me Al..." Sounds so innocent and pure. It easily lifts my heart 😌

Lol especially with the way Chevy Chase raises his head as he’s singin it, I was 4 years old when this video came out and I thought Chevy was Paul Simon 😂

Paul Simon is not a guy who you usually think of as having a sense of humor, but he is subtly hilarious here. He starts to sing "A man walks down - " but then realizes, to his mild surprise, that he's not the one supposed to be singing. He twiddles his thumbs. When Chevy is "singing" the na-na-na part, the look on Paul's face says he really wants to be singing but he knows he's not supposed to. Great song, and an incredibly fun simple video.

What I want to know is how Paul Simon kept a straight face. Loved him when I was a depressed teen who was convinced that Paul Simon got me with I am a Rock. Now I'm a. Old lady on Paxil enjoying life and still love Paul Simon.

Yes, and a bunch of activists tried to cancel him over it. He famously sat down and had a frank conversation about it with them. That was still a time before social media when so you could discuss things contentiously but still be heard. The conversation was filmed I think by PBS. But it was also clear all the South African artists were behind Simon and appreciative.
