It's amazing, isn't it, that Maestro Domingo had the commitment to learn to conduct. And with such skill. I don't think he would have performed in public as a conductor without knowing absolutely he could do it so well.

I didn't know Domingo was a conductor! When did he learn to conduct? Which orchestras did he use for practice while he was training? I mean, there are some terrific amateur orchestras about, but do they really get people of Domingo's stature making a career change? Or did Domingo's vocal experience automatically fit him for the conducting role so no practice needed?

@frank, Domingo has been conducting longer than he's been singing. His parents put him to work at whatever needed doing in the family zarzuela company, along with his sister, from the time they were toddlers. He was very musical already by then. By the time he was a teen, he was conducting the chorus, and soon he was conducting his parents too. Had his singing not taken off like it did, he said he would've thrown himself into conducting with the same dedication for which he is famous. Paz y salud.
