when I was 17, my piano teacher told me I wasn't ready to learn this song. so i went home and over my christmas holiday, I taught it to myself. When i went back to her after the break, i told her i had been working on it, and she thought i had just done a little bit of it, but i had the whole thing down. Best moment of my piano career, and now im 21 years old and its still my favorite song to play. I just wish i was still taking lessons so i could get even better

This is my issue with traditional approaches to music study. Whilst structure in learning is undeniably important, restricting what students are and aren't ready for based on perceived level is such a poor approach. Taking on a complex piece will teach you a lot about what you do and don't know.
@aidanolesen3814 жыл бұрын
@@andybarker8787 The issue that comes with that is learning things wrong and developing bad habits. I'm a trumpet player for example, and one thing that comes with learning things on your own despite the teacher's caution, is where players play in a way that sounds fine to them but damages and wears muscle out over time which will destroy their ability to play in the future.

Others just bang this out, hitting every note perfectly. ... But Barenboim seems to understand Beethoven's emotional intent. He varies from initial statemens of very soft musical near-whispers, then transitions to more foreceful, exhuberant passages, after which he returns to the basic statement. His calm cadence is perfect. I never tire of this and go back to it when I'm feeling a little down.

I had someone stupid recently argue with me over how the violin must be more complicated than the piano because the piano keys are clearly defined so the moment you press you are basically pressing a correct note as opposed to the violin. THIS video is what differentiates a good pianist from a lousy one. It’s not about the piano being able to perform a clear note from one hit. It takes IMMENSE command to actually control the pressure of the note. One slight shake and you could either press too hard and that high notes will affect the next one and will sound so horrible. Imagine controlling the pressure of every note (one light and one hard another light and another hard) WHILE playing the left hand that plays something completely different in addition to controlling your feet to back it all up with the pedal. Yeah piano is easy my ass.
@texanforeverthompson36454 жыл бұрын
And don't forget the foot pedals that a violin doesn't have.

I think it's clear the learning curves are different. Violin is perhaps more difficult as a beginner because it's difficult to get a pleasant sound out of the instrument but both are obviously extremely difficult to play well, especially at such a high level.

Barenboim is the master of interpreting Beethoven's sonatas. You know that he will have considered the way every note is performed and related this to the overall structure. This gives his playing an integrity which can weather criticism of his particular choices - there is always an underlying coherence. Well that is what I pick up from listening to him
@stevem78 жыл бұрын

November 2023 I had the privilege of visiting Vienna. This has been one of my favorite pieces of music virtually forever, probably inspired by Schroeder playing it in "A Boy Named Charlie Brown". I even had the privilege of visiting Beethoven's grave in the Zentralfriedhof. Being in the presence of someone, even posthumously, who could - in my opinion - articulate feelings and emotions as music this powerful was overwhelming. I was overcome. This is a very good interpretation of the music as I think it evokes Beethoven's fragility and emotional depth, as well as lots about the location, time period and environment. It's haunting, it's beautiful, it's vulnerable. I want it played at my funeral.

ridiculous! in fact Elgar wrote a piece based on a conversation he had with a friend about Beethoven's 2nd movements. they're that special...

When someone understands the music and the composer's intention this clearly, it is more than the original, Mr Barenboim especially in his younger years showed this. Thankfully he put down the baton temporally and played the pianoforte again for us. The piece that shows all the love and feeling I have for my beautiful wife that I can't explain, - he and the composer achieve nirvana.

QUE HERMOSO VOLVER A ESCUCHAR A ESTE MAESTRO DE LA MÚSICA. YO TOQUÉ ESA PIEZA EN 1996 EN CHILE CUANDO TENÍA 17 AÑOS, EN LA UNIVERSIDAD FEDERICO SANTA MARIA.

Absolutely sublime. Greatest performance of this movement, ever. Perfect tempo, gorgeous phrasing, so delicate. I could listen to this over and over. I think it’s the most beautiful piece of music ever written. Genius Beethoven, anointed by God. ♥️🙏🏻

Having already made a comment which some might regard as critical, I'd like to add something more encouraging. I've read through a large number of the comments already made. I agree with those who describe this movement as "great" or "one of the greatest" and respect those who believe it is "the greatest". It certainly engages the emotions of most people who hear it. However, I'm left wondering if many of those commentators are familiar with the first and third movements of this sonata. I regard both of these as very worthwhile, each in their own right, but also as having a role as framing, or providing context for the gem that the middle movement undoubtedly is. I believe context is always important, not just in music. By the way, the opening bars of the first movement are very, very tragic and emotive, although most of the movement is upbeat. It is probably those very slow opening bars which led the publisher (rather than Beethoven himself) to give the sonata its nickname. So, my encouragement (to those who haven't encountered the outer movements) is to explore them, and to everyone to listen, at least sometimes, to the slow movement between the other two. Here is a challenge for those who, like me, like challenges. See if you can find a single "quote" in the second movement of a feature which occurs several times in the opening bars of the first.

He is holding something precious, absorbed in the miracle of it. So beautiful to witness his care and humility towards such a piece.
