In this episode it is all about kintsugi and how it can inspire a way of repairing damage to a briar pipe bowl. It is all about showcasing the history and wear instead of hiding it. It is done, utilizing brass inlays to repair the rim of the Jobey pipe featured in episode 6
Kintsugi is an ancient Japanese art form used to repair pottery with gold dust to highlight the repair lines.

Wow! A repair that makes a beautiful pipe look even better. This is exactly the kind of video I was hoping to see when I first started looking around for pipe videos years ago. Smashing.

Top marks all around - for the kintsugi inspiration, for the clarity of instruction, even for the music. Thank you! Now that several years have passed, how fares the pipe?

Excellent! I've used a similar method to fill cracks and imperfections in my animal calls and fly rod reel seats, but always using sanding dust from the same object.

I have really enjoyed and learned so much from your videos. Thank you! I'm anxious to try this kintsugi technique on an old estate pipe I'm working on cleaning and want to repair some old small fills.

This is an awesome tech I will be using it from now on. I was thinking, if there is a flaw in a solid area of the briar, wetting the area and lightly tapping over it with a leather stamping tool of any shape, maybe a star or oak leaf design might have a very nice effect.

@barepipe have you tried to use two-part epoxy instead of suoer glue?

Thanks for the replies. I just have one more and then I’ll carry on...is there a reason why you use the glue and not the epoxy that they recommend with the dust? I forget what it’s called but I recall the instructions saying something about mixing it with some epoxy they make.

So this holds up pretty well with heat? Or is it “as long as the pipe doesn’t smoke too hot” type deal?

J. Oakley I have not had any issues with this. It holds up pretty well with heat.
