I thought i had no sound in the amp but holding a speaker to my ear I could barely hear music. I’m hoping I can just replace it and the amp will work. I’ll know soon enough.. if anyone has any insight please let me know. Thank you in advance!!

I used to bench test an amplifier on a server psu using a 2ohm dummy load(speaker voicecoil submerged under water i.e. electric kettle), then one day the server psu kept tripping (i thought the psu was unstable because i cranked the psu up to 13.4V- so i dropped it back to 12V), then the amp popped its 2*30A fuse so i replaced them with 2*40A(stock fuses usually popped if left long enough at clipping on 2ohm), i noticed the amp made significantly less power(AC voltage was lower at clipping this time, when its usually higher), by this point it was too late before i realised my dummy load shorted to 0.8ohm. I damaged the amp in some way because the idle current went up from 1.5A to 2.4A after the incident, the amp used to make 900W now it makes 500W while still consuming 1400W. when i inspected the amp there was visually no damage, the only component that was suspect hot was the transformer. The transformer is SMPS style, looks very easy to overheat, im not sure if its damaged, i dont know what else it could be, is it worth attempting to rewind the tranformer? Im worried that ill crack the core in the process.

When you started using your scope to probe the pos and neg rails, where was your scope grounded to?
@barevids3 жыл бұрын
Shares a ground with the 12v power supply negative through the mains. This means the ground path is quite long so there will be some minimal noise on the waveform, however when probing high voltage signals this is negligible. If I need to probe some very low voltage waveform where shape is critical I will hook up the probe ground wire to a close reference point.
@kurchak3 жыл бұрын
@@barevids oh ok, so your benchtop DC power supply has the mains ground connected to negative then. Like shorted out at the supply terminals I'm guessing? I'm having a hard time with grounding cause so many videos say different things. I saw a lot that said it's important to have mains ground be completely isolated from the DUT and the Oscilloscope. To avoid accidentally shorting the mains. Is this just not an issue because the amp is not plugged into the mains line? Like no hot mains going through the amp? Thanks btw for the reply brother, I know you have a lot of subscribers and comments so I appreciate you taking the time to reply!

I'm glad that you uploaded this video because I'm about to start on a Zeus 1800.1 and it's a big mess. I feel sorry for the poor amp because I know that it was abused...LOL! Never doing any repair myself, the power rail caps melted off the board (05 clarion dpx11500) but amp worked up to that point, had a second battery and fuse between batteries blew causing it to run off back battery until melting point, would putting in rail caps backwards cause it to push voltage from power inputs instead of taking it in? I think maybe manufacturer of caps put indicators of negative backwards as I put them in same as old caps and remaining caps before changing them all and made sure polarity was correct by connector wires. Or could it be something else? I would try to send it to you but cant afford shipping international.

Negative rail at lowside gate is just "ground" as far as its concerned. It comes from both the pull-down resistor between gate and source (which is connected to neg rail) and also from the drive IC lowside output which is ref to neg rail.

Just finished the video, today I learned how a DD amp works and how it can be repaired :) cheers dude Although I have a quick question, you mentioned that it is bad to power on an amp without a load or speaker connected, I'm guilty of doing this all the time with my PDX amps while setting the gains, although I have never had anything break as of yet.... Should I avoid doing it in future? Also I have a 4 channel where only 2 channels are used... So the other two have been left disconnected for years.... Hence asking you the question
@barevids6 жыл бұрын
Hey man! The PDX amps are very well designed to prevent this from happening. Its more of an issue on the older generic class D designs. Your 4channel is probably a class AB - they dont care about having a load or not. :)

Cheers for the info my man, I always did wonder the question if I was alright to leave the speakers disconnected on the PDX Your right on the PDX, they are pretty hard amps to break and I notice that they love to turn themselves down when things get hectic.... I would like to seek your advice. While I attempted to fix the Fusion car amp I found the one output pair of Mostfets damaged and changed them. I was surprised that after the “repair” the amp drew too much current and didn’t function. The power supply worked. When I tried to use my scope to trace the audio signal from the input of the Mosfet driver ICs (IRS2092S) I could really see it on pin 3 however one channel worked anyhow. I was even more puzzled when I saw high voltage and high frequency oscillation around the Mosfets. It seems to me that some component brings the overall unit into oscillation. My question, have you seen such behavior and could the IRS2092 be faulty or what is your experience ? bg{add}bgcontrol.com
@barevids5 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy. Those drive ICs are incredibly sensitive and almost always die when a mosfet shorts. If you found shorted fets, you must replace all fets on that channel for new ones, even if some survived. Very important. You should also change the 2092 chip as this is more than likely damaged as a result of the fets shorting. Note that you will not see an audio wave on any of the pins of the mosfets, this is not how class D works. The 2092 is taking an audio signal and converting it into high and low side pulses that can drive mosfets.

So theoretically you could bypass the power supply and transformers using these at higher voltage 😂😏🤔

If you can provide positive and negative rail voltages, yes. It would be easier to power these from ac mains using transformer (which would step 120v up to +-150v or so)

FAR as I'm concerned that amplifier shouldn't be sitting on your bench for a repair for that price it should be bullet proof? I've owned Dd products? To me they are very over priced it's not made in America it's another Korean amplifier with different parts I really don't like Korean amplifiers anymore I rather stick with Brazilian amplifiers price is cheaper and probably easier to repair and they don't take up a space?
