Yes, there was a sequel. Features even more alcoholism and brussels sprouts. It's even more impressive due to way more added content, and yet worse and more RNG dependent due to a couple of insane bosses you either speedkill due to getting lucky with drops or get destroyed due to how fast they move around the screen. I love it and hate it at the same time :V The stupid Christmas Stockings on Stage 2 come to mind, as does the final boss on Stage 6 which literally picks attacks at random to use. It has two which are essentially undodgeable (the Snow's Over attack now no longer has a safespot at the top left, and the Here Come The Sprouts attack literally fills the screen and cannot be avoided unless somehow you have a full belly meter and possibly use it to destroy the sprouts). The final boss however has several trivial attacks it can use including summoning snowflakes, a giant snowman to bounce across the screen, crying, and sneezing phlegm.
Several unlockable modes, all of them considerably worse and even more ridiculously unbalanced. You can't properly play Boss Rush due to not being able to build up a belly meter before some of the stupider bosses like the Christmas Stockings, Turbo Mode isn't too insane at first but enemies move across the screen faster which makes the later levels annoying, and Hyper Boss Mode is stupid and is basically Boss Rush with two bosses at once for each boss. You can unlock everything via credit feeding and the game generally gives more than enough credits. Turbo Mode might be 1cc'd a lot of luck, but the sheer bullshit and lack of items in Hyper Boss Mode makes me convinced it's not reasonable to 1cc it.
Challenge Mode is equally ridiculous, and is the final unlock. You get only 4 credits (1 for each player if playing 4 player), it's incredibly long, and periodically bosses will appear while small enemies continue to spawn. If you don't get lucky with alcohol drops you simply won't be able to speedkill stuff and protect yourself. Frankly when the bosses start appearing I'm not sure how you're supposed to get through some waves without dying unless you're constantly getting lucky with alcohol popping up at just the right time to speedkill stuff. Someone crazy might be able to 1cc it but I don't see how it's realistically doable or something you'd even want to spend time doing. Frankly it's insanely RNG heavy on getting good item drops at exactly the right time. The CHRISTMAS bonus doesn't kill bosses like it did in the first game either, so you're hoping for a full belly any time a boss shows, or something like a blue/green present appearing each time (as if that'd happen).
I play Mary Xmas in the arcade mode and Grandfather Xmas in the challenge mode. The hitbox is small and centered on the character's belly roughly. There is no invulnerability when using your vomit attack or when using a special attack item. There are however invulnerability items that look like flashing rainbow balls that make you transparent for a period of time. The characters are all the same except for special attack you can get if the RNG drops a blue/green present:
Santa Claus: Has a thin laser beam. Does immense damage and can cancel shots, but the low movespeed sucks for sweeping and the laser actually pushes you back when using it. Decent, I guess.
Saint Nick: Summons lightning bolts. Strong, but only hits enemies along the right edge of the screen.
Grandfather Xmas: Summons a blizzard that can damage pretty much everything onscreen. Lasts a decent length of time too, the best special attack in my opinion, hence why I use him for Challenge Mode.
Mary Xmas: Sends enemy bullets back on pickup. Also seems to stop them firing briefly. If the enemies aren't firing when you pick it up it doesn't seem to hurt them, making it the weirdest and possibly the worst special. She has the most ridiculous voice acting which is why I use her for arcade mode.
Granny Xmas: Only playable when you unlock Challenge Mode, and only usable in Challenge Mode. Her special is a brussels sprout shield that absorbs bullets, but is basically worse than other specials since you really want to power through and speedkill whatever's shooting at you, especially if you're getting overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of enemies that can appear at once in Challenge Mode.
Truly a delightful xmas kusoge indie shmup for the whole family! Check out the first game here: • Barfer Sickmess 1 - 1...
