A very good idea ! I would like to add that if you find one without keys, there is usually a number stamped on the lock, which will allow any locksmith to make one for you !

I bought 1 of the 5 drawer lateral cabinets last year. I went back 2 months ago and came home with 3 more. I absolutely love this setup. Was lucky, as all are black. I realize you can purchase dividers for these. However, I like using 1/4” ply and cutting to fit. I can vary height to fit my needs. The replaced a whole wall of ugly wooden shelves.

We use the taller 4 draw cabinets, we made sure that the draw sides are the high ones, just a fraction lower than the fronts. They work REALLY well... We've put one of them on a thick plywood base, and mounted some heavy duty, locking wheels which helps a lots for moving about, just need to make sure the heavy items are in the bottom draws, and have to use you body to support them when moving about, but the plywood base and wheels keep it nice an square too. Enjoyed you video, it's nice to see others using a good and relatively inexpensive solution for tool/ workshop storage 👍😁💓

Yes, yes, and yes. I have a 4-drawer lateral file cabinet with the hinged fronts, so I don't even need to pull the drawer out to retrieve stuff most of the time (except for the bottom drawer). I can't imagine owning enough handheld power tools to completely fill it up, so the last drawer is for PPE to go along with the tools. Works super well, and paid $80 for it at Goodwill.

I never thought about bringing the "office" home. I have used laterals at work for years, good suggestion.

Beside tool boxes I use regular file cabinets for bulky tools & some supplies & a lateral file cabinet that is on a dolly so It doubles as an extra table are when needed. The lateral file cabinet is a more convenient option as far as space & ease of use, just harder to find in my area. Stay Safe, Joe Z

i just got my hands on a 4 drawer like this in black. same price too. I have a friend who buys storage units and this was in it with big air compressor and engine hoist. Planning to put it on casters for easier mobility when needed. Its stupid heavy too. Love video too.

I have that same identical cabinet. I use it for the same thing as you, corded power tools etc. Its size is great for sliding under a workbench, or in my case a small lathe/mill combo. I was fortunate enough to get mine from work for free, they remodeled the offices and were going to throw it out.

I have one like yours but with built in shelving on top, I like the shelving as I can use it for things I access frequently such as drills gloves, flashlights etcetera. I currently store my wire feed machine in the bottom drawer as it gets used infrequently and to use it it’s as easy as rolling the drawer out

You may get better deals at government surplus centers, if you are fortunate enough to have one close by. I use an old 9 drawer microfilm cabinet for my hardware storage. In fact, most of my shop came from surplus. Including the old wooden desks that I use as work benches. Just replace the peg legs with 4x4s to jack them up to 36in.

In the last 20 years local government and school systems have sold off hundreds of thousands of great quality file cabinets for cheap.I prefer lateral files, too. Given the chance, buy matching cabinets or, at least, dimensionally interchangeable cabinets you can repaint to match. Another KZbin video showed shallow pans or trays that ride on the rails intended for hanging files. Maybe those are available from the big office suppy chains. I don't know but they look useful, two to a full-depth drawer.

I've found a great source for these is local business liquidation auctions, for really cheap prices. I used to work for a large law firm and HON makes excellent and virtually indestructible file cabinets, built to hold a couple hundred pounds per drawer. Warning!!! Always load heaviest items in lowest drawers, because unless you've bolted the cabinet into building framing, they can tip out on you. There are taller 4 and 5 drawer lateral units, also, but the top drawers tend to open with a panel that is like an overhead door, instead of pulling out with drawers.

Habitat does have some amazing stuff. The one near me isn't all that great or the good stuff is long gone before I can check. The 2 others on the other side of Orlando are fantastic; just a bit far. Good tip is to google your home store as many have Craigslist and FB pages that updates with new inventory & sales. I've gotten some good stuff that way.

Wooden shelf from scrap wood. The filing cabinets can be had for free when people move and put them on the sidewalk. Wooden shelves are more space efficient and hold heavier stuff.

Add wheels? Reinforce with angle iron? 🤔
@chipb11935 жыл бұрын
Actually it’s not even that hard. Think furniture dolly attached with bigger sheet metal screws. I used 2 x 4’s and bolt casters to that. Then I used the screws to attach that frame to the bottom of the cabinet. The weight of the file cabinet will mostly keep the frame underneath so the screws are just keeping it from sliding off. I’ve done that on my 3 and 4 drawer lateral file cabinets which are taller than what is shown on the video. No issues in over 5 years.

( I LOVE TEXAS ) and then after I bought two lateral 2 drawer cabinets which I plan to install wheels on them and some wood to use as a work bench. Yea LATERAL is the perfect way to go.👌🏼
