This is a 'yixing clay' teapot. My wife is Chinese and we have two of them. They are highly collectable in China and are commonly given as gifts, either to friends or family, or as corporate gifts. Even the cheapest, basic, modern ones sell for the equivalent of £100. Older, elaborate examples can easily fetch £1,000. They have been exported to Europe since at least the seventeenth century. Look out for them if you can - they are red/purple in colour and are unglazed. If it's less than £100 you're guaranteed a bargain!

The first one I ever bought of these is the same shape as this one but has a dragon tail handle and a dragon head knob with a mobile tongue, and 3 matching cups and saucers. I also have one that is shaped as a tree stump, although I think that one is quite modern, and several others.

I often think that the so called "experts" that are put with each team to assist them, are deliberately telling them to get certain items, knowing they wont make much so as to save the TV company a load of money. They wouldn't be experts if they couldn't spot a profit ! Its all a con in my opinion.

Yixing teapots can sell for a lot of money depending on the master (if hand crafted) and the clay used; these are often 'aged' for years. Not sure about the one for sale, as the elaborate decoration seems over the top - typically the high quality ones look fairly non-descript, perhaps with a little design etched into the side (in general you want the pot to be consistent in thickness for optimum brewing). I have quite a few for different teas and these range from £100-400.

It all comes down to being at the right auction house with the right amount of online reach. This right here is all well and good for a TV show but if you have something you think is really worth something it's worth spending the money and the time to get it appraised and in a decent auction house. £43 million at auction - because it was auctioned properly. Might have gotten 10k for it at one of these small auction houses on a mediocre day WITH online advertisement.
