Hope you enjoy a quick bonus video that shows how we get some of our gear. In this video, Kevin goes through an SUV full of gear that a local customer brought in for us to take a look at and pick out some pieces we could salvage for restoration or parts.
This stuff has been sitting around for quite a while and has a healthy amount of dust and grime on it. Some of it we can save. The stuff we can't save will go into our parts collection to help some pieces down the road.
Let us know in the comments what you think of the pieces we picked up!
The music in this video is Condor by Dust Follows.

I visited your store a couple weeks ago. Really like the way you guys have everything set up, very relaxing and low volume music playing. All the equipment was easy on the eyes. While I was there, a few fellars came in with equipment and talk talk talk. I am amazed at how controlled Kevin is, when people talk loud and excited that they are going to score a fortune for their junk they bring in. I know I would not have the patience......

It's Friday morning here in Southern Colorado and I am watching Skylabs to get tuned up for my morning at my small vintage audio store, named, "My Vintage Audio". This program cracked me up because some of my best deals have come in the trunks of cars or in the back of pickup trucks. Thank you for making these videos. 🎯😊👍

I had a set of 601 Series II that I bought brand new in the early 80's. I had them until 2004. All the foam had deteriorated around the big drivers and I wound up giving them away to a junk guy. They replaced a set of RtR speakers that I bought in college in 1980. Now that I really appreciate vintage gear, I wish I still had them all. On the other hand, my wife is glad I don't.

We're all so prone to thinking we have some hidden treasures. I am always a victim of this, but hey, that's the fun of it. You like what you have, so stick with it. Just don't assume anybody else likes it when you go to sell your stuff.

Of all the goodies I saw in your video my moneys on the Jeep Renegade hiding in the background of some shots. Great colour and as long as the rocker panels don't rot out I think one day that will rare. I've been looking for one up here to add to the collection for several years but finding a Renegade in Khaki that isn't Swiss cheese at a decent price is just about impossible. I'd have better luck finding nice vintage Marantz!

Just a question that you don't have to answer. How much do you pay for that kind of equipment where you are? I'm in Baltimore MD and follow you guys and are awesome. Love your videos and your take on different things maybe not all the time but that's a given. I know what I pay for certain things here and was wondering if it's cheaper in an area like yours compared to a bigger market area. I repair and sell quite a bit as well but often see my equipment going over to the west coast. I know the cost of living is higher over there compared to the east coast.

Love the video, but hey, those 4311 sound better than the 4312, their not upside down just built a little different and it works just fine and dandy, to me anyway, every set of 4311 i had always sounded better than the 4312 to me, and ive had alot of em. I dig the 4311, and 4310 also, id take either one of those over the 4312 for me.
@skylabsaudio
@skylabsaudio 3 ай бұрын
You're right they are not upside down if they are hung from a ceiling in a studio- the way they were intended. That's why the controls are on the bottoms as well. So you could reach up and twist the knobs. If you place them on the floor, they are upside down and the tweeter will be pointed at your shins.
@JukeboxAlley
@JukeboxAlley 3 ай бұрын
@@skylabsaudio true, but that's why we all get those pretty tilted stands to aim em up! I think anyway you spin em, on their side or top, they just sound good, but for me I liked them that way myself and about 12-18 inches off the floor in a 2 channel setup.

Damp, moisture, mold….. nasty, nasty, nasty. Why do people store/neglect things that way? For me, personally, damp and moldy is a 100% *NO-GO-ZONE* You’ll never get all of the mold infestation/spores out of a set of loudspeakers. It’ll always come back to haunt. I’d have politely declined 100% of the speakers that guy had in the SUV. I would not have even lifted a finger to handle any of it. Sorry -NO THANKS

That's why certain areas of the hobby aren't for everyone, there are collectors, and restorers. I personally like redoing old receivers and speakers from time to time, it is A LOT more work than most people will ever understand, but I like it. When I see stuff like that, it's like seeing a stray but potentially great dog. I see it as what it could be and try to get it back to it's former glory.

I bet you guys dont pay nearly anything at all and talk people down, then sell it for top dollar. Typical. Wipe them down, wax and feed, new foams and cloth ...maybe a cap. Total cost 35 to 45 bones. Resell sticker $350.

There's a lot more work in this stuff that average people will ever get. I'm redoing a set of massive Polk SDA SRS 1.2 (basically 6 ft tall and 180 pounds each) at the time, trust me, it's not an easy hobby. All new screws and all hardware is new for the oak tops and bottoms, also refinishing the oak is a job, and then there's the dustcaps as usual, alotta work in this hobby, dirty, tedious, time consuming work, I do it pretty regular myself, it's not for everyone. But it is for me.
