Seriously, use a custom web search of any given year that involves news stories about loose barges and you'll find at least 5 stories from different parts of the Ohio river and Mississippi river valleys.

Actually, they DO when rivers are at flood stage, but it doesn't happen often, and rarely this many. The only other event of this magnitude I can recall happened on the Monongahela over 40 years ago. I happened to be at Station Square at the time, as the barges were slamming into the Smithfield Bridge! Bang, bang, bang! It was sheer bedlam, as the police raced to close every bridge. I just discovered that 10 coal barges broke loose in Louisville last month, so I suspect it happens more frequently than I thought. There have been other incidents around Pittsburgh, to which I've responded, "that's nothing, I witnessed the BIG ONE", lol.
