Financial Independence allows you the freedom to do what you what and when you want. Or perhaps to do more of the things that you enjoy even if it doesn't make you much money. Some have given up a stressful career for something more low key after reaching FIRE. Whether being a barista is required or not to product enough income for living expenses, barista fire might not be an option for much longer.
There is a new barista robot that looks extremely promising making actually coffees without the help of an automated coffee machine. This one actually does much of the same motions as an actual barista and even makes latte art! It's crazy!
Don’t beat around the bush, beat the bush!
I enjoy a good discussion but I like getting to the point even more.

Absolutely correct and spot on. I am actually going back to the workforce after 2.5 years. Trying to land a path to get back to my old job. My 'retirement' has been pushed back from 41 years old to around 46 years old, IF the stock market cooperates.

The problem I see with this is that its too slow. Most of the business for a coffee shop is during the morning. When a machine can only pump out a drink every 2 minutes. Compared to that of 2-3 baristas at 1 station can probbaly pump out a drink every 15 seconds. I think barista jobs are safe for now. I don't know about 5-10 years from now though

Within a 1 year or 2, you can buy 10 of these for the total compensation of 1 barista. So they will be able to replace multiple barista for the salary of 1 year meaning all those jobs can be replaced.

One thing for now is, robots are not designed multitasking. Baristas have to answer the phones, progress the online orders, taking complains, complement the customers, take out the trash, clean the floor, stock the coffee, fill up the cofee and condiments, call purchasing, call the maintenance if the machine is broken, please the bosses, deep cleaning, please the auditors, etc.

Isn't this like mock meats (like impossible burger) where people get excited for a short while and the excitement fizzled out as they aren't very price competitive compared to the real meat (yet)? I think people would rather get coffee from a cute barista (who also makes sandwich etc which robots can't do) assuming the price is about the same. If the price is like 50%, MAYBE people start to switch, idk

It's not about what customers want, it's about labor costs vs the cost of automation. Soon it will be cost effective and once that happens the jobs will disappear
@TheSimArchitect
@TheSimArchitect 11 ай бұрын
What I want to see is robotic replacements for plumbers, construction work, electricians (specially ones that deal with high voltages, so you eliminate the chance of a human getting terrible damage from electrocution and other accidents) and many other physically demanding or risky jobs. The robot making coffee that way is cute and all, but doesn't it make more sense to have an entirely different machine to make coffee automatically for you without all that drama? I admit I am happy with those machines where we press a button and wait for the coffee to be ready. I actually wanted to buy one of those "vending machines" to make my own coffee at home (I notice many large offices/hospitals have them, without charging for the drinks). I have a feeling people pay 5 dollars (or whatever they charge these days) because they want the satisfaction of having another person serving them. Gives them a crooked sense of superiority, I guess. I can't see another reason and I never buy coffee from a coffee shop because I don't see any added benefit. I'd be more likely on the other side of the desk, serving, as I am below your "low wage job" threshold by far. 😬
@TheRealJohnMadden
@TheRealJohnMadden 11 ай бұрын
You'll never be able to have a non-human performing any type of infrastructure job such as a lineman, plumber, electrician, pipe fitter, etc.. and even if you could build a replacement, it's something that's decades away.
@TheSimArchitect
@TheSimArchitect 11 ай бұрын
@@TheRealJohnMadden You will. Maybe not now, but as soon as it becomes more expensive for large companies and they decide to replace human labor, they'll fast track something and start manufacturing it. It will surely take a while. It is difficult to convince engineers to develop machines to replace themselves unless you're paying them enough to retire and only if they achieve the desired result. Society will take much longer to adapt as well as CEOs of large companies. But innovation is coming. I have a much better time using an optical gun to scan my groceries while I shop (very accessibility friendly for people who have a hard time moving fast, they don't handle your groceries at cashiers here in Europe, you load and unload the conveyor belts, plus bag everything yourself), then I put the wireless gun at the checkoug kiosk and pay. If the system thinks I bought too much (or runs a sample thing, or a human with a remote sends me for manual review, whatever) a person comes and test a few items to see if I scanned everything (nice shop lifting prevention). Also, when things go wrong, you can ask for help or use the painful manual checkout. You can buy as many gendered items as you want and nobody will be there to look funny at you. Or booze. Or yoghurt. Or candy. No fat / whatever else shaming at checkout either! When I go to McDonald's, as a very cheap person, I like to compare prices and optimize my order, calmly, to spend as little as possible while getting the best possible deal. I don't need to worry about planning an entire order in my head to avoid overspending, I don't need to "beg" for no salt on my fries, I don't even need to talk to a person if I don't want (maybe nod when getting my tray/bag) and it's much easier to not give any tip (if you're in US/Canada) when served by a robot. Can you imagine going to a nice restaurant and being able to always give ZERO tip because there's no server involved? Plus I don't like to make people angry at me because they're serving me as I don't feel superior to them, I just want to be served when I feel lazy to cook or if I want something special, but I'd get it from a vending machine if available at the same quality. The possibilities are infinite. Imagine having a robot that's your butler, maid, handyman etc etc. It will happen in the future.
