2:09 Selmer S80 2:35 Francois Louis Spectruoso 2:58 JodyJazz HR* 3:24 Drake Crossover 3:48 Aizen LS 4:16 Vandoren V16 4:44 JodyJazz Jet 5:16 Vandoren Optimum 5:40 Yanagisawa Ebonite 6:01 Meyer Ebonite 6:31 Otto Link Ebonite I prefer a tone that is smooth. isn't too bright or too dark, not too much edge and has a bit or projection. I liked the Francois Louis Spectruoso the most out of all of these, especially in the higher notes. I also liked the JodyJazz Jet even though I don't like it as much on Alto or Tenor. I liked the smooth more mellow sound of the Selmer S80 which I think would be better for classical than the Vandoren Optimum which sounded too muted and mellow but I like the Optimum mouthpieces more on Alto though. I found the Aizen was a bit too warm for me and personally didn't like the tone you got, but I liked the smoothness of it. I also found for me, the Drake was a bit too bright and projecting. When you mentioned metal mouthpieces, could you do a metal mouthpiece comparison for alto?

Yeah - Everyone is looking for the Metal MPC reviews - Wow - as if I could keep up with it all ! Personally, unless I'm playing an outdoors or '80s rock gig, I leave my metal Berg Larson in the case. I love these richer Ebonite tones !! Thank you and all me Sax UK pals 'across the pond' for this intelligent post !

My thoughts exactly, Jim. Aizen is smooth as silk, excellent control. Otto Link, right in the middle of the spectrum, which is a safe bet. Vandoren Optimum sounded splendid.

I almost agree but I’m biased as I have all 3 except my V16 sounds like somebody has shoved 3 pairs of socks down the bell (a total waste of money). Still nothing beats my Runyon Quantum delrin. The Aizen was rather embarrassing,

Yep. And you could totally get a classical tone out of it if you had to. The fact of the matter is, which is not something a KZbin vid trying to sell mouthpieces would say, the versatility of a great mouthpiece is in the player.

A lot of these sounded muffled to me surprisingly. Itd be nice to have a comparison vs the Yamaha 5c stock "Old reliable". Its between the Drake and Otto for me

A lot of that probably comes from that Jim doesn’t play bari sax as a main horn.

I am currently playing a Francois Louis Spectruoso but a little bigger than the 120 opening here. I love the piece. I have so much control with it. I think mine is in the neighborhood of a 144 tip opening. Not sure I would find another piece with as much comfort and control as mine. However, if you have one, please let me know.

I would have ranked the V16 among the better sounding pieces. I really thought the Aizen was an odd choice as a favorite, because the intonation went a bit wonky on it. But I understand that feel and response influence a player's choices as well, so perhaps that was a factor. I agreed with Jim's assessment of the Selmer, which surprised me, and the Drake, which I really liked. The Optimum failed the test for me.

Vandoren B7, any comments, I liked this one.

Mark DiSanto I’ve got both the B7 and the B9 in addition to most of the others Jim tested in this video. Both vandorens are great but I greatly prefer the B9 which is my favourite bari mouthpiece at the moment. Give the B9 a try, it’s great!

@WillieWunderbar Жыл бұрын
Based solely on what I hear in this video: The Aizen LS seems to play way out of tune in the higher notes, to my ears. The Vandoren Optimum sounds very muted indeed. Francois Louis Spectruoso sounds great (like the winner) to me. (both in volume and tone over the whole register) But I will stick with my meyer I think.

@luclioen63924 жыл бұрын
if you're living in Brazil, just contact Nelson at Borb Oliver Mouthpieces near Sao Paulo. vendas-bo@borboliver.com.br I bought a New York 6 from him and it's very nice, good quality, plays easy and good intonation on a Keilwerth. Mind you, not suitable on a Conn 12 M bari ..that instrument needs a extra large 'double' chamber. Borb's mpc is a medium chamber, Meyer like as you will have guessed.

How do you find the otto link tone edge ? Just bought one myself for my alto and I find that the quality of the finished product is worst than my selmer S80 ? Also read some things about new Links' inconsistency

I bought a tone edge when I first got my bari and I was super disappointed in the quality. I played it just until I got something more playable.

@@jacobdeaven7477 Yup ! Struggle a lot to put the reed on it but my teacher did it today and plays fine What do you play now ? And did you ever own a vintage Link ? Heard they were more consistent back then !
@lowtone94 жыл бұрын
If you like the Link, the Yanagisawa is very much like a Link, but with much better quality control. That said, my own modern Tone Edge Link is perfect. People tend to discount the Yanagisawas, but they are very good mouthpieces. Any of these need a little time to find which reed works best and might take a slightly different approach, too. For example, the V16 works great with a Vandoren Blue Box reed and can go bright or dark.

To me you pretty much sounded the same on all of them. A little brighter on the JJ Jet. I have found that you don't need to spend $350-$700 on a mouthpiece to sound good. I think that the mouthpiece makers' hype is often just that. A way to part a fool and his money.

Up to a point I agree. It's much more to do with the feel and ease of intonation when you blow through the mouthpiece/horn imo. But there are differences in sound; I dont think the mic picked them up very well.
