Thanks George - a simple thing that could end up costing a lot of $$$ to replace the still.

George, this is right. People don’t realize that even though the pipe to the thumper is only 3/4 of an inch, it’s height that matters most. Wouldn’t matter if it’s a 3/4 inch pipe or a 3 ft pipe. 3 ft height of water is your head. It takes a lot of suction to pull water up 3 ft, and each foot is even more. Ask someone to try sucking water from a bucket in a tube and they’ll understand how that will crush thinner walled copper stills. Cause as you know the suction gets even worse when you open it up to a larger vessel like the still itself. It’ll crush right up.

Well done George. You are a Legend. Sound advise. Keep the great work going.

Yes I’ve collapsed a 30 gallon just draining the hot stuff, pls open system within a few seconds of turning off heat source, ideally at same time! Have tools ready n in place!

Thank you George for this Alert. I just got the Mile High (8 gal pro) a few months ago. I have been buying essence from them and they can not get my order right and take 5+ days to get the order to me and I'm in Phoenix Arizona just below them ;

Think of it like canning a mason jar and the lid has that seal that sucks in and seals them.

Not bad advice but I have left mine closed and all it does is suck air back through the condenser thereby pulling liquid from the thumper back to the still as it equalizes.

The same whith mine...
@BarleyandHopsBrewing6 жыл бұрын
True, in some instances this is overcome by teh construction of the still and location of its parts. Not everyone has an equal system. When a still kettle does crush it's too late to go back and say "you should have opened the system before cooling".
@chuckdontknowdoya61005 жыл бұрын
And the one time you fill your thumper a little higher or it sucks that peach you put in for added flavor into the tube and bam. Always better safe then sorry in what we do.
@LiborTinka5 жыл бұрын
In chemisrty, this is called "suck back" and happens especially when bubbling gasses through a liquid. It can happen that the liquid gets "sucked back" all the way to the boiler.
@BarleyandHopsBrewing5 жыл бұрын
Exactly and when the contents of the thumper is such that is creates a stopper the weak sides of the kettle can collapse. Very well said Libor.

So the still has the mash Thumper has cold water ? Condenser has the worm an alcohol is made ??
@BeardedBored6 жыл бұрын
Hey George, what causes the thumper to fill up? I've seen them fill up during a run and have to be dumped, and read a few forum posts about it without a good answer. Any ideas? Thanks:-)

Exactly. Great explanation. George

I found this video a little too late. unfortunately it crushed my 10 gallon copper pot like a pop can and put 2 tiny pin holes in it. Is it possible to fix this and use it again?if so any tips or tricks?

My question is how much sugar to use,let's say I am making apple or grape wine,let's say one pound of apples or one pound of grapes,is there a precise amount of sugar to one pound of grapes? The more sugar you put in the greater the alcohol content? And if so is too much sugar will the Alcohol content produced kill the yeast?so finally what is your educated opinion of the ratio of sugar to the weight of grapes or any other fruit to insure a reasonable alcohol content that insure complete fermentation of the yeast,,,thank you
@chuckdontknowdoya61005 жыл бұрын
I use one to one each pound of fruit gets a pound of sugar

George I have a question. I have heard of people rerunning their product after it comes out of the still . Should you rerun your product if you have a thump keg or is one run enough
@BarleyandHopsBrewing5 жыл бұрын
One run is always enough if you run it correctly. George
