You have some impressive looking knives in your collection of Barlows Joe. The TC one with the Bonilla Burl covers is exquisite and would make an excellent gentlemen’s barlow. As for defining barlow knives I think any similarly shaped traditional with a strong bolster at the pivot is called a barlow these days. I have a small Japanese “Gentlemen’s Barlow” (loosely translated) that is squared off and has a small bolster (whereby knives this small at 2.5” would not usually need a bolster) and I guess therefore called a barlow. BTW the smaller secondary blade in it are scissors, lol. After seeing your fantastic Barlow collection I need to look at Bokers and vintage US made barlows.. I think TC’s will be out of reach for me hereafter anyway. Thanks for showing us Joe.
@MesserHQ3 жыл бұрын
Yeah ive even seen sheffield "barlows" without a long bolster, just went off Levine's definition to make it easier on myself😊 there really are some great looking vintage barlows, a lot more I want to pick up. Thanks bud, keep me updated on your package.

Obadiah Barlow supposedly designed the pattern around 1670 in Sheffield England. That makes them an old, old pattern. You might be on the spot considering the north was full of Quakers and the Southern states had a more diverse population. I have one Imperial Barlow I bought in 1970 it cost $3.50 and is a shell model. The newest one I have is Winchester Bullet model made in China of course; but is a real nice one for the price. I decide to order a Taylors Eye Witness Buffalo Horn Barlow to get the real deal. Or a close facsimile of an English style Barlow. They have an enlarged handle; I liked the looks of. Some of Obadiah Barlow’s family moved to The United States and the story goes joined with the Case Brothers at some point. You can find more if you google it. You got to watch this video made by Stefan Schmalhaus. He is from your neighborhood; it might cost you some money if you do. I order one after watching the video. I can’t believe you didn’t know about Stefan Schmalhaus. Once you see the quality videos he makes on knives; you will want watch all of them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2ird6d6mLFnsJI
