Derek instead of direct exhaust to the outside you should consider a dust collector. It will capture all the dust and you recirculate the air inside the shop. Remember that whatever you exhaust you'll have to make-up. The air will come from outside either trough the HVAC outside air intake or via garage doors sills and any cracks in the building shell and you'll have to heat and cool that air. The duct connection to the table looks like about 12in diameter perforated duct meant for a dust collector. You need a lot of static pressure to pull the recommended airflow (I'm going to guess in the neighborhood of 1000 cfm at 1.5in static. A barn fan (prop) trough the wall won't generate that kind of airflow, on top of that you'd be exhausting 2 1/2 of your 5 tons of cooling. Check your table manuals and talk to your HVAC contractor. I am an air balancing technician by trade and that is my recommendation for you to really save $$.

Everything you said makes sense and should be taken seriously i think but the reason i wouldnt want to just pump it outside is because its steel dust and it will get all over his shop and rust it as its blown all over the tin! I would have a serious filter setup on the exhaust side of that table!!

Simple dust collection is not what you need for a cutting table like this. The point of venting it outside is because of the deadly gasses it creates in the room. It takes a filtering system specifically designed for this type of application if you are wanting to re-circulate the air.

@@toysoldier46552 in my shop, I have one 2 hp dust collector hooked up at the end of my line of tools (just the blower portion is inside). I piped it outside and into the top of an old 500 gallon oil tank I installed the top of the dust collector on top of the tank to allow the pressure to escape. I cut a door in the side down low. When I have to empty it I shovel it out and into cardboard boxes and pack them tight like a brick. The boxes are then thrown into my outdoor boiler to heat the shop. Any spillage is outside and the 4 winds take it away.

My friend has a dehumidifier for her apt, I've emptied the bucket on it for her after a day or so and its full, it's probably 2 gallon bucket, but it blows pretty. Warm air out the back from the. Motor, I can't tell if it's actually helping . She's also has a portable ac, but She's got high ceilings, it never feels cool in there to be . But, high ceilings ,hard to cool, shes also on the top floor, and obviously heat rises

Ex father in law had a pretty good idea with heating/cooling half of his garage at a time. He bought a 40 or 50 foot long roll of plastic, hung it from the ceiling and rolled and unrolled his 'wall' whenever he needed it. eventually hooked it up to some kind of small motor to do the turning of the roll but he still uses it every summer/winter in MN. He made sure to get a clear plastic to help with light because he had minimal lighting and dark walls.

once you get your coffers filled again you might want to consider a solar installation to offset and be able to crank the HVAC. it's getting really cost effective these days, and with your giant roof on the shop you could get a pretty big system. alternately you could even do ground mount thats high enough to park cars under and keep them out of the rain

​@@aliasfred it's not a problem, panels are build and tested to withstand quite the beating. Got ours about 8 years ago, paid for itself since last year and free energy since then. During summer we run our AC and still give power back to the grid.

@@davidcatlette9697 Right... Couple of things. Solar still produces when its cloudy, just not as well as when it's sunny. You don't use solar 'instead' of grid power. You use it for when the sun 'does' shine and grid power the rest of the time. For a place like this, any sort of sunny day would run the heat or cooling for free. That's how it works for me.

Hey Derek, I'm a HVAC tech up in canadada. I completely understand trying to keep costs down, but in my past experiences if you don't have that wall up between the two halfs of the shop. You should run both, your building needs what it needs for heat, you either run one almost all the time or end up running both half as much. You'll use more energy heating with one then heating with both.

But you are correct from what you said one unit will run over time to compensate for the other unit being off so it’s best to run both at the same time to equal out consumption.

Air to air heat pumps are the way to go, in his environment they are perfect. I'm in manitoba and suggest to any costumer with electric already to go air to air heat pump. Only other thing about these heat pumps he put in, looks like they are 13 SEER, which is the most lowest on efficiency for Canada. Wonder if there is a lowest for us. I always try to go at least 15 but price starts to climb quick

Hi Derek. Been working in the shop for over 50 years now. When Dad and I would work in the 1970s, alls we had was a couple trouble lights and a salamander kerosene heater, for when it was really cold. (In Wisconsin). Like you said. Just toxic after a few hours. Dad passed away in 1991. @ only 63. Miss him everyday. Over the years the shop has improved tremendously a little at a time. Some days I feel guilty that he didn’t have what I do now for a shop set up. I know though, that he’s along side me everyday I’m out there. Bless you and the family. Derrick have the septic guys come out and take both lids off of the septic tank. Have them check the inlet and outlet pipes. Inlet tee and outlet tee are at different levels inside of the tank. The tank moved a lot, it probably crushed the pipes or pulled the tees lower in the tank, and that will make it malfunction.

In the shop I used to work in we would hang heavy mil plastic from the ceiling to the floor to segregate the workspace from the cold storage part and we only heated 1 side. It worked surprisingly well in the North Dakota winters.

A buddy of mine, had some kind of bubble wrap, type stuff that he would hang down, in the winter time, to help contain the heat. I believe he said it was solar pool covers. Whatever it was, I know it worked real well.

First time I went on vacation maybe a month after installing Nest thermostats my buddy came over to feed my dog fortunately and the AC switched to heat by itself and the house was 100 degrees inside. Keep an eye on those Nests.

Clear sheet plastic, drop cloth, from the ceiling down to the floor to section off the main shop and storage. Staple 2x4s to the plastic for weight. Inexpensive wall that allows light to pass through.

I like the green or white foam insulation boards..they're cleaner than fiberglass. But holy shit have you seen the prices? I live in NH, I went and got green foam board for a job we were doing , Lowe's in gilford,NH and probably all the other Lowe's, charged like $60 a sheet!

7ish years for me and same here, I've had a nest cut voltage randomly for y for a split second and start right back up. New install we did, they wanted to keep the thermostat. Old unit lost its compressor, so did the new unit. Nest is best In the trash lol

Yes! either the “y” signal, “o/b” signal (if it’s a heat pump) or even “g” signal I’ve seen those intermittently drop out. Best in the trash is right. Lol

Agree, my Honeywell thermostats work great and have been solid for years. I monitor and run my lake house (75 miles away) and home from my iPhone. I chose Honeywell over the Nest. Having said that, I hope your Nest thermostat works great and is dependable for years to come.

I just read a comment someone said they put a nest in , they went on vacation, and luckily their friend went over to feed their dog, the nest switched itself from AC to heat by itself , and their house was like 100 inside. Poor dog

You’ve got quite a bit of roof area. Ever think of adding solar to take the sting out of the electricity bill? That spray foam will help a ton. My friend has a couple metal buildings here in TX and the foam really makes a difference.

My parents did spray foam insulation in their new home build. I was absolutely blown away on how great it does. Middle of summer and the attic was extremely comfortable. Middle of winter and the crawlspace was nice. Buddy that build a ginormous shop did it also and it was a huge difference also. If i ever have the choice or able to recommend, i say do it if possible.

pro-tip, on my bench grinder I dangle big magnet from a speaker or something near the discharge, it doesn't catch all the grinding dust but it gets a majority of it, then I just peel it off into the trash. Now they have the super duper magnets, molybdenum magnets, they might work in attracting metal from your discharge.

They use big canvas curtains in aircraft paint hangers to divide up the booths. They make different thicknesses and sizes different. They put them on tracks so they can be pulled out of the way. I think the automotive paint guys use something similar on their sand booths. Like a giant shower curtains. Just an idea

Maybe you should have looked into mini split heat pumps for conditioning your building. Maybe you should look into a ground mount solar array to help power everything. Lots of solar energy info on YT for design and best products. Solar Surge, Will Prowse, Justin Projects, etc

You should look at wi-fi shutoff valves for your main. Certain ones can connect/work with water sensors and automatically close if water is detected. Fairly inexpensive for peace of mind. Would save a guy some headaches if he's outta town on a resto and something happens.

Derek I would check into a curtain wall. They're kind of cheap and you can get a lot of different varieties and I'm just trying you a temporary curtain wall to divide it so you. Don't have to cool the whole 9 yd. I know it wanna hold all the cool but it'll hold the majority

The key to your packaged units is the duct work in this type if space. In a space that high you can easily run your hvac unit fan in the manual mode for heat. Cooling requires having the returns located properly . I'm sure your guys know there stuff. I've been doing HVAC for 40yrs and everybody has another way. Stay cool

Also a guy could pick up a bunch of pallets to keep parts on, you can move em around on a pallet Jack. Might help organizing and raises them up off the concrete.

I personally work for an HVAC company and if it were me, I'd do about 75 in the summer (especially being a 5 ton on each side) and 60 in the winter. And I'd also just leave it set at that temp. If you keep changing it back and forth or turning it on and off when you need it, you're gonna be using more electricity than if you'd just leave it on at a set temp.

In hindsight, maybe leaving that end wall up when you expanded the shop would have been an idea. Could have cut an opening big enough for items to pass through while still being able to enclose one half of the shop if needed.
