You know how sometimes you do something and you wish you hadn’t. It was 1972 and I bought a 1963 split window for a grand total of 850.00 , it had a little damage. Repaired it all , stripped in down to the bare fiberglass . put a lacquer paint job on it, which was the thing to do at the time, wet sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. Black with red interior, was proud as could be with it. One of the first outings went to a road corse race just to watch, I never made it out of the parking lot for people wanting to look and talk about the car. Drove it for several years and one of my biggest mistakes was to sell it. Back then you could buy them.

I read that lots of customers did not like the split window design and had them converted to single window. Might be just an urban legend.

I have heard that all my life… I have owned a lot of 63 split window Vette’s in the last 15 years and have only ever bought 2 that someone removed the rear split window from… so it isn’t as common as they say… I will agree that the split does make the rear view mirror pretty much useless.

I was lucky enough to find a 1969 L-71 corvette with an F 41 heavy duty suspension and optional side pipes that hadn't been on the road since 1982, Having the restoration done this year, it also has a wild paint job. Can't wait to get it back.

In '85 I bought a '63 SWC from a guy that brought it down from PA. It was Daytona Blue with the same 300hp twin snorkel cleaner, carter AFB carb, etc. It had the exact same rust hole in the frame just ahead of the kickup though not as long. They all rust there. One night I was traveling back to school in it and felt something warm on my leg. I turned on the dome light and found my jeans covered in engine oil. The copper pipe to the oil pressure gauge had sprung a leak! Thanks for taking those hideous side pipes off. Those just don't belong on an SWC.

@1982MCI
@1982MCI 3 жыл бұрын
And they make sure it stays that way too so that they are the only few that can stay in the game and then just sell to the richer. That way the common man can’t pick one of these up for $20k and stick another $5-$10k in it and have one hell of a nice car to drive and enjoy, it’s better for these guys to keep prices near $100k and above cause the know the typical owner/driver can’t shell out that much

The good deals are still out there but you have to get off the couch and go get em! This car was only $35k when I bought it in February! That is the problem everyone wants to sit behind a computer to do this job… not many of us doing it like I am. I personally go look at every car I purchase in person and haul them home…. Most of the classic car dealers now don’t go anywhere but the office… they just wanna wire guys for them… I won’t do it I would rather see what I’m getting and make sure it’s what the seller says it is!

@@mercman2.5 he sand blasted and powder coated the frame. Which is what all the big restoration shops do…. I sold it like it was at the end of the video… to each their own. But if I was to restore it I would have did the same also. Sandblasted and powder coated and used the original chassis… anytime you can keep the original chassis with the original vin stamping that is a HUGE plus. So if they are useable/fixable after sandblasting we use them.

A travesty of automotive injustice to leave a car like this to collect dust. Drove a split window in Chicago area 1966-7 era belonged to a friend's in laws. Baby blue 300 HP four speed. This was the BEST Corvette body design before or after, bar NONE.. I'm an Avanti fan and owner (starting 2 years before this Vette model) But consider it the closest in beauty to the Avanti. Classic design. My fave Vette.
