My Grandparents took a ride with a barnstormer in 1931 to celebrate their wedding. It was a wild ride w/ loops, barrel rolls, etc. Grandmother never dared to get into an aircraft for the rest of her life! She died in 2001. Grandad finally flew again, when he took a ride with his private pilot son in 1971. He was very nervous, but he wanted to be supportive, since he was proud, that my uncle got his pilot's license.

Now you can see why they were called flying birdcages! Then the V-8 engine and knowing there were versions that were putting out 200 HP as in the S.P.A.D fighters. I love it! Being a retired machinist just adds to the excitement of watching this and how these early aero planes were assembled. Thank you so much Kermit & Crew.

My grandfather was a barnstorm and is in the new paper records for that and flying mail between the the wars. As his still flying grandson, it’s next to think of him flying around with his buddies doing shows and giving rides. It was like watching men going to space back then.

Thankfully his airport is centrally located in Florida reducing the chances of major hurricane damage in the future. Wish the same could be said for the Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL. That facility is probably facing destruction sometime in the future and gone will be many rare, irreplaceable U.S. Navy aircraft preserved outdoors and even indoors.

This is totally amazing. A lover of all things aero related World War I era since I was a kid building Guillow's Comet, and Sterling balsa kits I am truly amazed of the dedication of these folks in their quest to restore these vintage aircraft. That too, their knowledge is mind boggling. How they interact is a pleasure to see as well: no phony conflicts to keep the viewers entertained. Thank you for these wonderful and educating videos gentlemen.

My guess is it will be used for a static display as is. They already have a J1 in the works and I don't think Ken has another one in him. Not to mention the hundreds of other projects they have to do. Besides the only thing this hunk of junk will be any good for is some patterns, nothing in this pile of scrap will ever be airworthy.

My friend, the late Don Lockwood , was presented with one of these after his 16 th birthday around 1927 for his 16th birthday by his dad who was a wealthy associate of Sam Insull. One of the conditions was that his son would periodically fly over to Windsor Ontario for a cargo of good and safe quality liquor. Don completed a number of these booz flights with no problems. He followed the train lines and after dark the light from the south side steel mills served as his dependable beacon. Talk about contributing to the delinquecy of minors! His had a Hisso engine.

In the early seventies there was a guy “Charlie Klisage, spelling” who built two J-1 Standards at Ryan field west of TUS. He built both using OX-5 engines I think but one had the radiator on top like the one you showed and the other J-1 had the radiator mounted in front. I had a chance to fly the latter one around the patch and was blown away at how it flew. No brakes, a tail skid, bungee shocks, the rudder bar as you showed and wind blown airspeed dial on the outer right wing. Monster wood prop that he probably made and on landing I thought it would flair easily but instead it pitched up as I pulled but the sink rate didn’t change. Luckily the actual pilot “Dick Coleman” added power knowing what was needed and we plopped onto the field. I’ll never forget the opportunity he gave me that day. Can’t to see yours when finished.

Hi Kermit; What a great find! After watching this brilliant video I googled the Standard J1. As a Brit. it was not a plane I was familiar with. You really should emphasize the AGE of this WW1 trainer, it appears to have been only produced up until the end of 1918 and this makes it really something super-special. Great free entertainment from FOF , great crew, brilliant projects and marvelous planes. Thank you!

Nebraska is a hidden gem of these sorts of discoveries. I know where two WWII tanks are buried in a hillside. They needed landfill, and drove them into the hole. Yakutat Alaska has a road that washed out in the 50's- They crammed a bunch of Grummans- Not sure if Bearcat, or Hellcats...into the hole, and paved over

I saw a video a few weeks ago make by someone who was touring the pioneer facility as they were preparting for the auction. I saw this airframe and another and considered notifying Kermit of the existence of it in case he were interested. I had no idea of the model. I got busy and kind of forgot about it. I also assumed that kermit had a network that would tell him about it. I am pleased that my intuition was correct.
