I would recommend trying to learn the sculpting tools in blender if you're wanting the small details to come through, while the scanner captures a decent amount of detail, it will always loose something in the scan but will act as a good base layer, sculpting the details in blender will allow you to retain much more detail that can then be transfered to the resin print.
@AndreasEsau Жыл бұрын
Fully agree. Learning sculpting in 3D is much more approachable than normal modelling.
@USTragen Жыл бұрын

@christopher- Жыл бұрын
I wanted to suggest using blenders sculpting tools as well, as this would have been a pretty quick and easy cleanup. But i can see the appeal in staying true to how the original was made at least a little bit. While going full digital is very convenient, it's also easy to fall into a trap of sterile perfection that removes much of the charm that would otherwise be found in a handmade model. In this case, the time one could save may not be as important as the creators own preferred process of making things.
@USTragen Жыл бұрын
@@christopher- oh for sure, this would all depend on how much detail you want to keep, and while you can add scratches and the like in sculpting software it's not authentic, especially if you want to keep the homemade aesthetic. But I agree that it can feel sterile, it's a balance, use the software to sharpen everything up that the model loses in the scan and that's it really, I know from experience trying to make a perfect model and just spending way too long on one

As much as I love Blender, I think for what Barnaby is trying to do something like Nomad Sculpt may be an easier option. It allows you to get right to the sculpting with a very intuitive UI. Assuming he has access to a tablet with a stylus or an iPad with an Apple Pencil.

giving dabchick the ability to emote with secondary movement would be *insane*, cuz he's already very expressive for such a simple puppet! flaring head feathers would be great for startled or annoyed expressions, and the ability to blink or be half-lidded (maybe even wink?) would just be incredible for expressiveness overall

Electroplating sounds like a fantastic idea for smaller pieces like the beak or other metal accents, the crafting channel Nerdforge has a few instances of using this technique for book decorations and details and doll customizer Dollypop showcases the technique in their Mermandalorian doll. It seems to me like a technique that can be done with limited space and materials and quite beginner friendly!

This made me think of Matthias Wandels pantorouter, a wooden mechanical contraption rather than digital. He can machine pretty precise wooden parts by making big versions first that he can trace with the machine that translates his movements to a smaller scale... I don't know why, but I love this overlap in woodworking and 3d-printing... old knowledge applicable on new things... Oh, I'm sure mr. Wandel did not invent the pantorouter, that's just where I first came across the machine
@EvieJanePotter Жыл бұрын
I wonder if it's feasible to do both mechanical and OG dabchick? I can imagine if Lord Dabchick wishes to go on outdoor adventures that mechanical parts may not be as useful, whereas while he's serenading us the extra expressiveness may be appreciated.

If the original dabchick parts are still somewhat holding together, have you considered moulding them the traditional analog way? If you took a silicon cast of them you could then use that to make resin casts without worrying about losing detail or prints failing. 3D printers are much better for prototyping than production.
@ObsessiveGeek Жыл бұрын
I was already wondering why you weren’t considering adding more details before you mentioned it, considering this is an updated version of DabChick. For the beak I would go with a 3D printed press die and mount it in a vice for applying pressure, you can probably go to a thinner brass and use an extension of dab kicks head in the final 3D print to go underneath the metal beak then just some glue and your good

love this, great seeing the scanning side, seen as I have been in 3D scanning industry for a few years it is great seeing the low end hobby scanner being pushed to there limits. I agree with the other comments that suggested learning how to use blender to do cleanup and add details but also wanted to add onto the idea of the scale. There are some materials that can be used for molds or in molds that shrink consistently (IIRC) they could be used to print a final model at larger scale and then shrink it to size.

There is also another very useful technique with miliput that if you boil water then put the clay in you can speed up the cure time of the putty from a few hours to around 15 minutes. The only downside is that is does slightly bleach the outermost layer of the clay but a slight sanding reveals the base color underneath(though I'm not sure how it would work with acrylic paint added but might be worth a shot). This was the first time I saw the freezer technique so I figured I'd throw this in here just in case it might help. Great video as always!

A brush on epoxy coating heavily saturated with metallic mica powders(or potentially even straight up brass powder) could get you a very convincing metal look. Little less setup than electro forming, just use a art or tabletop resin, brush it on and continue to rotate the model every 15 minutes for the first 3-4 hours of cure time so the coating is smooth and evenly distributed over the entire area you want to metalize.
