This haul was so fun! I've been looking for a good nonfiction introduction to the Gulag, but Anne Applebaum's history is like 800 pages which stresses me out-- so I'm definitely going to check out the abridged version of Gulag Archipelago first. Happy reading :)

Lol. With Solzhenitsyn you either become more idealistic or pessimistic. I like to try to balance them. Really depends on the day. Which, that can sometimes get me in trouble. But, it's awesome you're reading Solzhenitsyn!

I highly recommend An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, it should be required reading. Also, The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins might also pique your non-fiction interests.

What an amazing book haul! We have very similar taste. I have read or own many of the books you hauled. I loved The WIll of the Many. I completely agree with you about the lack of eduction about the Native Americans in schools. But, honestly, I think its more that USA schools (and probably every country) whitewashes its own history for its people so that we think the US is the most righteous country and other’s feel the same national pride too about their countries. There is so much negative history that we wouldn’t know without actively searching for it.

@@hollyc4624 yes I absolutely agree with your statement about each country’s “specifically curated education” , it’s so eye opening to grow up and have larger access to other perspectives. So cool that you own/have read many of these books! I can’t wait to read The Will of the Many!

Reading the handmaids tale is very different than watching the show. It’s an amazing novel! The testaments is also one of the best sequels ever!! I don’t like the show because it is heavily focused on the violence and I personally don’t like watching that stuff. Also, Educated by Tara westover is one of my favorite non fictions! Love that book ❤

Over the years, I've heard about the Gulag Archipelago. The material and the length are monstrous, so it's good to sample the abridged version ☑. If you want a solid primer on Russian history, I wouldn't start with Marx's "The Communist Manifesto" though (which is really about Germany). Sean McMeekin's "Stalins War" chronicles the story of America's consequential Lend-Lease program under President Roosevelt. I do have a new copy. It's a big tome (paperback, less than 900 pages). McMeekin shows how a 'marriage of convenience' between great powers to bring down Hitler's war machine involving substantial military and economic aid became the basis for the then emerging Soviet threat during the Cold War. Similar to how US manufactured the Mujahideen.

This video greatly interested me. Because of the Russian books and the Native American book. You are so right about what we are taught in school about Native Americans. What very little and one sided we are taught.

I am probably so far behind the game that I’m the last person on earth to put this together, but, I’ve only just noticed that Barnes and Noble and Waterstones (uk) look exactly the same. So I just paused and checked. Yep. They are both owned by the same company. 😕 How disappointing. It makes me NOT want to buy from them anymore. Not that they’d miss my custom as I’m 90% a used book lover anyway 😂
