I took my .270 with custom made Barnes TTSX 130 grain bullets on 2 African safaris. Dropped a zebra, impala, blesbok, kudu, blue wildebeest and springbok on the spot. Couldn’t have been happier. I’m going back in 2026 for Cape buffalo and bought a 458 win mag and plan on using the exact same ammo. This ruff is awesome!

Barnes TTSX and TSX are probably the best hunting bullets made. You don’t need to run with the same bullet weight as you typically run with that caliber and lead core bullet. Run one to two bullet weight grains less and speed it up it’ll perform just as good as the heavier bullet would in that caliber. I like a 165 grain 30 cal in my ultra mag around 3400 fps it’s an Elk killing machine. I’ve taken them out to 550 yards with that combination and it works so well that I believe there isn’t a better hunting bullet made.

My to go load for Deer in my Tikka 270 Win. is the 110 Gr. TTSX hand loaded to 3250 fps. Shoots 1 MOA out to 300 yards. The 110 TTSX is a long as a 130 Gr. Cup & core bullet. this load took a nice Antelope at just under 300 yds. 1 shot, DRT. Don't be afraid to drop down a few grains when using the copper bullets. When a friend of mine asked me which Barnes bullet to use in his 300 WM for Elk, I suggested the 168 TTSX, not a 180 TTSX. He took a nice Bull Elk with that bullet. That 168 TTSX is as long as a 180 Gr. cup & core bullet.

Took my 264 Win mag using120 grain TTSX, and 300 Win mag with 168 grain TSX bullets to Africa. I pretty much used my my .264 for everything. 13 animals, from a half dozen warthogs, kudu, zebra, gemsbok, and a few others until on our last day my son took a spill down a mini mountain with the rifle on his shoulder. I watched them both bounce down over rocks and boulders. Sonny came out unscathed but we switched to the 300 Mag just in case there was scope damage. The smallest animals that we took, duiker and blesbok, were taken with the 300. Bullet performance was fantastic! I did shoot a gemsbok with the .264 using a Hornady SST (which outperformed the Barnes at the range by the way, but not by much) and it performed poorly, blowing up on impact, needing a second shot to put it away. Will be bringing the 264 with the same loads to Spain for red stag this Sept and back to Africa Nov of 2025.

I prefer the should high shot and have hit some bone with 120 gr. TTSX out of my Swede and never had distortion of the bullet like that. I'm thinking you hit a rock as the bullet zipped through. The angle of the distortion and the impression on the face of the impact area support this as well.

Been a barnes guy since 1990. 270 win, in both ruger m77 and browning XBolt SS. 35 whelen in ruger m77, 2x remington 7600 pumps. I've shot dozens of moose, Many elk, and many many many deer. Almost Every one with 130 gr tsx early on and the ttsx recent years. A smattering with the whelen I 200 gr recently. We only recover the bullets from about 1/4 of our moose... and of those, always under skin on far side. Barnes would be proud with the textbook magazine quality mushroom and literally 100% weight retention in those recovered bullets. In 35 whelen.. recovered a 200gr barnes from bull moose in 2023. Like the. 270, it was another instant knee folding kill. Bullet..again a magazine quality mushroom. Every elk, including many bug bulls... passthroughsź. Every deer... passthroughs. Almost no meat damage or shock. Of interest...after years of watching my kills have no shock damage... amd the folded instant kills, every single guy in my hunt crew, and several other friends... now exclusively use Barnes. The best bullets...imho.. based on extensive real world multiple species big game hunting.

The one deer I took in my life was with the same 130gr TTSX .270 win at ~140 yds. I misjudged the range as being much farther and on my second shot, stopped again and quartering away hard, put a round through the nape of the largest whitetail buck I have seen in person. Didn't go 10.

I have been using the 130 gr TTSX in my 308 Win for the last few seasons. I am using them at about 2900 fps and they have been great. In the last 2 season I have shot a black bear, a pronghorn buck, 4 whitetails, several big hogs and a big bobcat. Everything has been a 1 shot kill and with the exception of the pronghorn which ran about 100 yards, everything has dropped to the shot. And like you I have not recovered a bullet. I used Noslers for years but see no reason to every buy another bullet from them.

The bc thing is way overplayed. At any ethical shooting range with modern day cartridges bc is negligent. 200, 300, 400 yds it won't make a hill of beans difference. And, yes, those Barnes hunting bullets are great. Drop one size weight, eg.. 30-06 normal 180gr. Bullet, go to a barnes 150/160gr. Keep the shooting distances real and you've got the best hunting bullet on earth.

Agreed. For the most part..😂 Velocity trumps all things B. C. at normal hunting distance. I’ve been running the 110 grain TTSX out of both my 270 Winchesters, and my 270 WSM’s with mean penetration. That said, I’m tempted to run the 130 TTSX out of the 30-06…on a Bull here in Alaska. I expect it to exit. 😉

@@MIDNIGHTSUNALASKA I agree, it will exit unless you shoot him in the nose and expect a out the rear end shot. Over the years my personal experience tells me these bullets are pure killers. I've never recovered one from many bull elk that have been shot through both shoulders and out the other side. All these shots were made with a .280 Remington and the 140gr. Barnes ttsx. Devastating performance!! Your recipe will get the job done. Just keep the distances real. My only suggestion for 30-06 would be maybe a 150 to 160 class. Probably the 150. Go get em!!! Take care.

I have used Barnes for many years and really like them. As far as using a "heavier" bullet, Barnes recommends going down in weight grains from what you are used to in a lead core bullet. I have taken my last 12 Whitetail deer with Barnes bullets with superb accuracy and one shot kills. I worked up a load for my oldest grandson's 30-06 with a 165gr TTSX (instead of a 180gr lead core). He took his first elk with one shot and down. The elk walked 10yds and piled up. There are many good bullets to choose from, but for me, Barnes TTSX is a step up from any that I have used.

I get tremendous accuracy out of my M18 in 30-06 with the 165/168 TTSX. Velocity isn't the highest for the accuracy node and the 22" barrel as well as temp stable powder options being a limiting factor(wont be able to use any RL or ball powders without a mag primer), but in my region for moose or black bear 400 yards is a stretch so H4350 does the trick.

Accuracy, according to (what I recall from) Ron Spomer: (a) clean the barrel thoroughly if it's already been fired with other types of bullets, and (b) don't remove copper fouling from the barrel unless it's built up so much that it's degrading accuracy.

I like your videos bud. and Obviously 2800 fps 130 gr barnes Ttsx are working well. I know all the rave are hight B.C. bullets and new cartridges with long necks. but I really like that rig you have made yourself. a real classic. beautiful, the durable action and will last 3 lifetimes. Ive been shooting the 120 gr Ttsx in the 7mm08 ever since they came out. and although I don't get to shoot elk. I can tell you they will traverse a whole 250 lb hog from the rooter to the Tooter. and I don't think I've shot over 350 yards in 20 years so Im a real barnes fan. especially in the 243win it totally changed that cartridge.

I just started testing SUPERFORMANCE powder in 2022 for a few of my rifles. I have four 270 Wins, two 280 Rems, 30-06 to name a few. One of my 270s has a 25" barrel (Hart). With 59.5grains of powder, 130 TTSX, WW brass, Fed210match primers, I'm getting 3375fps avg. Lowest was 3360, highest was 3396 fps. I sent the pics and data to Barnes. They asked where I got the load data. I told them I used their data for the 129 grain LRX in 270 Win starting 0.7 grains less than their starting charge. This year I've killed multiple deer in Alabama with excellent performance

My personal experience reloading monolithic bullets is; one to find a powder that give low pressure at max charge with equivalent weight cup and core bullets (see manufacturer data) and two; look for a seating depth away from the land, this should solve your magazine length and velocity issue and give you a good accurate load.

Here in the Pacific NW the prices for those cheap garbage lead core so called Bonded bullets is often more money for them than a box or Barns bullets. Since the time of the Barns X bullet them came the TSX and the LRX I have loaded all of them from 165 grain in 300 Wby ammo for all of my hunting I use the 300 Wby mag for. I also have been as an only profession a Hunting guide since 1978. I just did an experiment shooting my 9.3x62 Mauser with those garbage bullets the Nosler Accubonds a 9.3 250 grain bullet into milk jugs and water so on the 3rd-water filled jug the 9.3 - 250 grain Accubond blew up into particles of lead and 4 shredded parts of copper jacket. This was my suspected reason I did this test and why I only buy these bullets for just shooting fun at targets. I've seen myself a client shoot a Yukon moose with 9 30 cal 180 grain accubond bullets with all 9-bullet blowing up into lead bomb fragments and I had to shoot the clients moose to kill it. Just when most of my life I have seen Hornaday bullets turn to lead bombs I see Nosler bullets are just as bad as Hornaday bullets.

Actually, the Barnes bullets have a higher not lower ballistic coefficient than a lead core bullet resulting in less drop and wind deflection. A Barnes TTSX 150-grain 30 caliber bullet has a BC of .420 compared to a Hornady 150-grain SST with a BC of .415. The longer the bullet for weight the better the BC will be. The only drawback to a longer bullet is that seated to the same OAL there will be less case capacity. This is only a problem if your rifle has a short magazine length. I run Barnes 130-grain TTSX's at 2,900 FPS in an AR-10 platform. I get excellent accuracy and deadly performance on game.

Have you considered a 7 PRC or 6.8 western? Or even a 6.5 PRC? The "modern" cartridges would allow you to take advantage of the longer, higher bc bullets if it's a real concern. Personally, it sounds like you've got a great rifle and a great bullet that has obviously been successful for you. Most would think that 130gr is too light for elk but with the penetration of the solid , not to mention the accuracy, I'd use it for anything out to 500yds short of brown bears

As an Alaskan hunting guide the rare Barns bullets recovered, I have seen recovered from Hugh Yukon Moose and brown bears the bullets wrecked ribs - leg bones that are Hugh with never deforming the bullets by ripping off pedals or smashing one side of the bullets all have been pealed to 4 pedals.

@Lure-Benson
@Lure-Benson 6 ай бұрын
@@desertdog1125 I am 64 years old, and I grew up in the Pacific NW with elders who hunted the North Oregon coast range for Roosevelt Elk and Black tail deer. The family mostly used 7 mm Rem magnums as I did and switched back and forth from 7 mm Rem magnums to a 300 win magnum then to 300 Wby magnums and a Brevex Mauser custom in 8 mm-378Wby magnum. Before Barns had the X bullet and now the TSX - TTSX -LRX bullets we would be using the Nosler Partition and the Nosler Ballistic tip bullets because we didn't have anything better, and we didn't know any better and just took for granted the meat wasted by these bullets extreme blood shot wrecked damages. 80 % of the time the Elk shot using the lead core bullets we would leave the full rib cage because the bullets destroyed it, and nothing was salvageable not even for hamburger meats and always eating this meat would find lead or copper chunks it the meat when eating. We also just accepted using lead core bullets we would use some 3 cartridges to put down one of these Hugh Elk causing the extreme waste of meat. Then came the Barns X bullets causing a whole new change in No meat lost and one cartridge used to kill these Elk. The difference of kill on the spot to shooting repeatedly by copper expanding bullets and lead core bullets was nothing the same. And when guiding in Alaska for Yukon Moose and Brown bears the very same happened was the copper expanding bullets killed faster and game was never to run off then looked for. I only shoot Barns TSX - TTSX - LRX bullets for hunting then lead core bullets for just shooting fun. One exception is the AR 10 I own I've chambered for 6.5-284 Norma that I shoot the Norma 156 grain Oryx or Vulcan bullets for hunting because in 6.5 there is no heavy for weight copper expanding bullets. By loading 156 grain 6.5 bullets in the 6.5 -284 Norma it can match the 270 Win in all ways.

A question for you guys please…hunt deer in Georgia (140/185#’s) …use the 143 eldx 6.5cm…formerly 130 gr psp federal prem…never any issues over the course of 49 plus years…ranges are close normally well under 200 yards…is there any gain you would expect me to see by changing to these all copper bullets??? Thanks in advance…Lee Morgan

Lee, for the distances you are shooting and the size of the animal you are hunting the only real advantage is the reduction in potential lead fragments throughout the meat. However, if you are not having any issues with that up to this point, then there is no need to change what works!

Lee, For my Louisiana self and family, we are all using TTSX’s now. I’ve found them, whether factory loads , or hand loads to be accurate (less than 1”) in our rifles. Only once did not get a pass through (frontal quartering, lodged under hip skin). Some of our hunting lanes have 20 year old cutovers on either side (so thick you have to back through them in order to break through the briars, vines etc. A low, behind the shoulder leaves a short, easy to follow blood trail, high shoulder DRT. We also process our own meat, less waste due to bloodshot and bullet fragments. TTSX’s have been game changers for us. 6.5 Cm, 7-08, 30-06, 270 Win, 300 WM. Good hunting if you try them, and Go Tigers!!

My brother inlaw hit a small couse deer at 150 yrds w a 100 .257 ttsx in the chest (25-06) Muzzle velocity is about 3150 Impact velocity was around 2850. Meat damage was very minimal for some reason. The bullet stopped at the rear of the ham up against the skin. So it traveled the full length of the body All the petals came off I am very surprised about how little meat damage occurred! Especially at the impact speed I'll probably switch to copper bullets now as I hate losing meat. I have lost a fair amount of meat with lead core projectiles

Copper fouling is a myth. If it was a such thing machine guns couldn't exist. Folks put thousands of rounds down barrels without ever having any copper build up. The solvents destroy barrels.
@kurtthegunsmith
@kurtthegunsmith Жыл бұрын
It definitely does happen occasionally. The reason it primarily occurs in solid copper hunting bullets is that the copper/copper alloy used is softer than the copper used on a jacketed bullet, this is for expansion. That is why you pretty much never see it on machine guns.

It has never happened. Carbon fouling is what clogs up lands and grooves. The carbon would close the barrel completely before you ever get close to filling those grooves with copper. Metallurgy doesn't care about what some gun guy told another and it got told again and again
@BB-xp4pz
@BB-xp4pz Жыл бұрын
Barnes limited the copper fouling mostly with the cut groves in the bases over the originals. Been using in 6.5 PRC, 243, .308, 30-06, 300 win mag, 338 win mag. All are shooting moa and under. Work your load through increments to find your rifles load node and seat depth. It will have a sweet spot or two.
@beenschmokin
@beenschmokin Жыл бұрын
@@BB-xp4pz That's not what the grooves are for. The grooves allow excess pressure to escape and reduce friction. "Copper fouling" is NEVER going to be a problem. You'll shoot out the rifling before you ever get enough copper to make a cunt hair of difference. Carbon build up from exploding gun powder is what has to be periodically cleaned from firearms as it builds quickly and in every little crevice. Many tests have been done and a rifle shoots it's most accurate groups after having a nice copper layer inside the bore. Even very very expensive hand lapped Barrels are not perfect and will have burrs and imperfections. These are negated by a film of copper put down after *** number of bullets. Copper on copper is slicker than copper on steel. Less friction equals more velocity. Copper jacketed rounds are no diff from solid copper. the copper part being what touches the steel. Neither will ever stop a gun from running from copper build up. Period. The end.
