Barnsley Canal Walk | Wakefield, West Yorkshire (Vlog #61)

I fished this canal 65 years ago as a lad in what was the Wakefield Tradesmans Angling club. We used to fish the wood side cut often, one day I put a tobacco tin with bits and bobs of fishing tackle in one of the holes high up in the rock face. My wife and I had a walk down the side of the cut picking blackberries when I remembered where I put the tin which is now a time capsule, I managed to get it out of its hiding place and sure enough, all the stuff was still in the tin, I put it back and I don't think I will be able to climb up to get it again.. So.

I often do that as part of a circular bike ride , thought it must of been an old canal but never checked , good to know I was right lol. I thought you was going to go to Barnsley along the canal, I did that last year on the bike, quite a long walk though.

On the thumbnail of that video that bridge used to be blocked of to people trying to get through it so my uncle my dad and their mates used to climb up that very steep wall love the video

Thank you, my friend. I enjoy filming all kinds of walks but I particularly love the canals, even the derelict ones like this. One of my favourite vlogs is the Shipley to Bingley one I recorded, which passes through Saltaire. It's an ambition of mine to walk the entire length of the Leeds & Liverpool canal one day, obviously not all in one day. 😊

there is also a link on the other side of barnsley basin old pc world which use the silstone beck to the m1 were it join the silstone wagon train that was part of the barnsley canal but the bits that are in water are mainly in private land as the m1 has cut them off in the late 70 s

Managed to finally do this section after a stop at anglers country park and have a pint at the New inn then back to stairfoot , really enjoyable bike ride

so the water ends at walton village start at the mine below walton

There was only about 100m to the remains of one of the locks including the workings. About another 200m after that you reach Walton

Yeah, it was a shame I had to call it off. I'm definitely going back at some point and following the line of the canal as far as it goes. I believe it goes all the way to Newmillerdam, although now filled in.

It used to be brilliant fishing back in the 80s, some really big Tench. Shame it was aloud to dry up like it does in summer.

Ivor parked on the main road near to Cold Hiendley Reservoir. He posts the direction at the end of the video. You can park at Anglers’ or do it in reverse from Watertown Park hotel 👍

If you park at Angler's, you can follow the path down to Haw Park Wood. Bear left and walk right down to the bottom to Cold Hiendley Reservoir. My canal walk begins where the footbridge crosses over from the reservoir to the wood. Or park on the main road where I did on my video.

ivor the link go on in to barsley to calton it fully there and easy to put back together but for the link to wakefield at the end of your walk the remains then start in barsley from the pc world old store in barnsley to the cross of the river were the dove link start to womwell were there few remains including a bridge in wath and back starfoot tecso the link to worsbrough is still there and the latter to elscar is all there but any sign of the link from mavers or the tunnel is there until it cross the railway in the park were the lock are still hold on with holes in the wood here the tunnel info www.bddct.org.uk/history/1903map_north.gif
