Barnstaple Junction, North Devon in the days of steam

Barnstaple Junction, now just called Barnstaple, was a major thoroughfare for north Devon and constantly had steam locomatives passing through it.
Today, it is much quieter, but still proudly serves the town. Also, I am sorry about the music, it was not my choice.

Enjoyed your video, I was born in 1933 five miles up the Exeter line, and everyone relied on the railway, Of course the GWR came into Victoria Road, I spent most of my life on the footplate in Worcestershire.Kind regards

Back in early sixties I travelled from Bideford to Barnstaple Jnct to do 70 D MPD. The loco on the Torrington train an LMS Ivatt Tank. The unusual feature was the passenger coach an old LSWR gated suburban carriage

How sad we pulled up all those lines that would be used today especially with light weight units like the voyager or 180s making light work if the route 🤔 I got a train to Barnstaple from Manchester in the 70s as my mum had a B&B at Woolacombe but unfortunately the line to Ilfracombe had closed but not lifted so I could see a lot of it from the bus ☹️

It's going to be very interesting as to whether Tim Steer's plan of ACE Rail to reopen the Bideford to Barnstaple line ever comes to fruition. It's certainly got a lot of support from DCC, all the area MP's and District Councils. It will depend on the next Government if it will continue the Restore your Railway Fund.

I think you will find that Barnstaple had three stations you have missed Barnstaple Victoria Road

Apologies, that was my fault with that. I'm constantly learning about the lines. It was dad who did the research previously.

It was actually 4 stations. 1: Barnstaple (Victoria Road) (Bristol and Exeter Railway 1873-and 1876) (Broad Guage 7ft 1/4 inch) then Great Western Railway (1876- 1949) (7ft 1/4 inch, then 4ft 8 1/2 inch Standard Guage). Victoria Road was taken over by British Rail 1 January 1948 under the Southern Railway. 2. Barnstaple Junction (Now Just Barnstaple) 1854 til present) 3. Barnstaple Quay Station 1870 - 1886. Ilfracombe line (L&SWR). Then site of Barnstaple Bus Station (1922 - 1999). Now Riverside Cafe. 4. Barnstaple Town (L&SWR 1886 - 1970) Barnstaple and Lynton Railway 1890 - 1935) (Narrow Guage 1ft 1/2 inch)

Yes, the music was awful but the film footage was good. Thank you! Hoping at sometime to find footage of Taddiport/Torrington and further.
