Van Zieks is the definition of “the duality of man” and I love it. He is a proper, mature, calm, aristocratic man yet he slams his leg on the table and throws wine around the court like an immature angry child. He is very funny as a character even though he really shouldn’t be. He is simultaneously funny, scary and intimidating at the same time. Ironically funniest character in the game. He is very intelligent and rational, however he is very emotionally irrational blaming one race for his brothers death. He is racist yet he is just, honest and cordial. Despite his prejudices he still chooses to help Ryu uncover the truth above all else and it is that desire for the truth that makes him become closer to Ryu as a person. He has humanity, despite being wrongfully prejudiced. He is rich yet he hates the rich. He is apart of the judicial system yet he despises everyone apart of it. Everyone thinks he is the Reaper but he is actually aiding Britain rather than destroying it. He trusts Ryunosuke (especially with Albert) more than Japan, Britain and its judiciary, despite him being racist. Ironically he opens up to Ryu more than anyone else. He looks intimidating but he is generally ok towards others. He should be a corrupt prosecutor who never lost, however he is quite the opposite. He looks intimidating but he is just tired, depressed and desperately needs therapy. He should have been the monster but he isn’t. He is simultaneously likeable and unlikable. This theme shows how he can be simultaneously intimidating whilst also extremely depressed. Your perspective changes based on the game that you play. Sounds intimidating in Adventures but it sounds tragic in Resolve. Your perception on van Zieks also changes as you play because he subverts your expectations. The man is a pile of contradictions and I love it, legitimately the best thing about his character other than his complexities, depth, growth and development. Barok illustrates the fact that, people can change and that is something that I greatly appreciate about his character. His beliefs and preconceived notions evolve throughout the game. These contradictions are what makes him feel very “human” to me. Humans are irrational creatures and van Zieks’ displays this irrationality perfectly. The most shocking thing about this game is that they have managed to make a somewhat likeable, three dimensional, multi-faceted racist who is the most developed, complex, complete character with immense depth to him in the main cast. He is a very fascinating character to me. That is a strong feat.

Barok succeeds where all other prosecutors failed in his background as a prosecutor. In almost every game the main prosecutor would be one that was "never beaten in court before!" and everyone would stand in awe before them (even when it made no sense like with Godot). The issue is that we then immediately defeat them in court and... that's it. The characters in the world would still talk about them with the same fear and awe as if they were never defeated even though they just were, time and time again by us the players. It would often kinda hurt their character for me. Barok wasn't like that. Barok was already beaten in court by the time we arrive so when we "win" our first case against him it's not immediately some grand achievement that all characters must now react to. His shtick was that, no matter if he wins or loses, the defendant will die one way or the other. That is why everyone feared him. Even then it didn't happen 100% of the time so when we inevitably win a case and the defendant DOESN'T die immediately after it still doesn't break his established character and only adds to the mystery surrounding him as they're trying to find the logic of who gets to live and who doesn't. His background is also super integral to the main plot of both games making him far more involved and thus far more interesting.
@lyonvensa3 жыл бұрын
Not to mention he's not an "evil" prosecutor. He's actually a competent one that rather wants the truth over the accused being found guilty, but they still managed to make him an antagonist by making him racist against the Japanese, with a valid reason for that behavior too.

His intelligence is unmatched, smashing away your arguments in one sentence many, many times, but he isn't focused on victory like the other "Undefeatable Prosecutors" are. It’s honestly amazing how every time I point out some great contradiction I feel overwhelming dread knowing van Zieks is already preparing some perfectly logical counter that makes me look like a moron. What’s even better is that he’s usually right-or at least draws the most reasonable conclusions with the info he has.
@l.n.33723 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I agreed with him during that one moment of game 2, case 2. Spoilers: When Ryunosuke makes a big deal about Shamspeare being a gas thief. Barok is quite literally mentally done at that point and goes on this highly amusing rant about how this is all friggin irrelevant to the case at hand (the victim being poisoned). He very clearly and logically stated why, exactly, the victim's behavior here wasn't on trial - the defendant was! And how the victim's petty theft doesn't matter for whether or not he was nearly murdered. Dude was so reasonable that I couldn't help agreeing with the prosecutor here, wondering why Ryunosuke was wasting everybody's time lmao
@PWLfr2 ай бұрын
@@l.n.3372One of his best rebuttals for me. Not only it was completely irrelevant at the time but unlike other prosecutors he doesn't object immediately and lets you go to the end of your argument just in case you come up with something interesting, which makes it all the more damaging to your case when you don't and almost assures him a guilty verdict

There's something oddly comforting that this mega goth prosecutor just casually allows Ryunosuke and tiny little Iris to examine shit in his office (like the wine barrels, the goblets and wine bottles etc.). All while this formerly intimidating prosecutor responds sarcastically to the main character's quips about him. It was hilarious to hear Barok comment on why exactly he throws around those hallowed chalices when Iris asks about it. And when Barok responds to Iris and Ryunosuke fearfully wondering if he stores corpses in those barrels, only for Barok to pout and retort that it's for wine barrels, you dunces.

Will forever love this man. His competency and reasonability as a prosecutor were what interested me about him, but his character steadily grew and so did my affection towards this character. Mild spoilers, but it always breaks my heart to know that Van Zieks has always been a sweet person, just aspiring to be a competent prosecutor like his brother was. The fact that he ended up presenting himself like this was probably because he thought it would be the wisest choice to go along with the grim reaper image people pushed onto him... and he's definitely depressed about this, but attempted to play it cool nevertheless. Did no one in the British empire think about how he might had felt about the whole grim reaper image he received? He's feared and respected (because he's a high-ranking member of the British society), but nobody seemed to care about how their treatment of him might had affected his mental health. He seemed so lonely when we get to visit his office. 💔 I feel he is the kind of person who'd admit his depression as only due to his brother's passing, even though he actually thinks a lot about how other people think of him. The dialogue from the Red-headed League evidence was funny and cute, he seemed to long for a community and make friends in general as well. ❤
