Baroness Betty Boothroyd, the first woman to be Speaker of the House of Commons, has died, according to current Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who said she was “one of a kind”.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, said: “Not only was Betty Boothroyd an inspiring woman, but she was also an inspirational politician, and someone I was proud to call my friend.
Here are some of her best moments.

She was the first speaker, as an American teenager in the 90s, whom I was ever cognizant of. I watched Prime Minister's Questions late at night on C-SPAN twice a week with John Major and later, Tony Blair, and it was my first ever exposure to the workings of British government. I was in awe of her, despite having so little knowledge of many of the trappings of her office and the Commons itself. I always admired her and thought she must've been such a smart lady with a great backbone to be who she was. She never knew that she reached a bright girl from an abusive household far away who never saw a woman like her before. I've shed tears for her, remembering her in my youth. She really was one of a kind.

I met Betty Boothroyd a few times and you certainly don’t forget it when you do! A real character in the best sense of the word. She was a formidable personality who was blunt and no-nonsense in her opinions, even well into her 90s. She will really be missed in Parliament and the U.K.

Speaking for myself, and I am unanimous in this, she was great. I say that as an American who watched British freedoms outstripping American freedoms at a rapid clip. Neither system is perfect, Baroness Boothroyd would admit, but she got in and got the job done and tried to make her country a better place right up to the end. Kickass women rule.

While I believe that the late Baroness Boothroyd & I are on opposite ends of the spectrum politically, I do believe that she was the best Speaker of the House in my lifetime. She was enormously entertaining & tended to business authoritatively and professionally. To me, she was *much* better at the role than the current House Speaker, and frankly the disgracefully arrogant John Bercow wouldn't be fit to shine her shoes.

I find it so weird to look at the behavior of the people in the House of Commons, grown men yelling, speaking when others talk, it’s a strange spectacle honestly…but hey, I’m not British, just an observation. Upper class aristocrats behaving like misbehaving schoolchildren, maybe there is a reason for the extreme gap between rich and poor in the UK when not even the politicians can behave and have normal respect for other people….
