Hey Cris, Awesome flight. Just a suggestion, on the GoPro over your right shoulder go to settings and activate the spot metering feature. what that will do is compensate the exposure so that the view out the front windshield is not blown out and everything will be properly exposed. Yes, some time back, a pilot in Texas got caught short by not realizing that his screen was showing weather HISTORY rather than in real time. He flew into the worst part of the storm thinking he was in the clear. I think he crashed and didn't survive. What a shame - Kim's too young to get the "Grease" allusion - "I got chills, they're multiplyin' and I'm losin' control...."

Gary, what happenned to the WX Radar? You had one and used it to fine tune deviations around precip.
@davidhoman38074 жыл бұрын
10:38 - I am reasonably sure the radar presentation only shows precipitation not clouds. Therefore you were clear of the precip, unless you were also getting precip when you were IMC. If you were not getting precip while in the Clouds, then the presentation accurately showed what you saw. There will always be clouds beyond the edges of any precip. That said, what you said about the lag time is also correct. Even NEXRAD can be Around 5 to 7 minutes old due to the time it takes for the radar dish to make 5 to 7 360° scans, usually starting at 0.5°, increasing elevation every degree up to about 3°. It just takes a while to complete the volume scan. Even though there is only one timestamp for the radar image, it is actually a combination of several rotations taken over a 5 to 7 minute time frame. Fortunately, precip Does not move much in seven minutes, But there is that compromise, That the displayed rain may not actually be where it is. Sorry for the long post.
@BaronPilot4 жыл бұрын
I agree it only shows precipitation but I ask you go back and look closely at the shot out the front window. You will see rain.
@davidhoman38074 жыл бұрын
Thanks for confirming that you did also have rain at some point. I saw some streaks just as you were breaking out. Prior to that it was hard to make it out. Plus I’m just watching it on my phone. Another thing to consider, is if the precip Is light enough, the radar will not pick it up. For example NEXRAD has a clear air mode and a precipitation mode. If there is no rain anywhere for miles the radar operator will put it in clear air mode. Once rain starts appearing and becomes heavier the Display will quickly start showing “too much” rain. That’s when they switch it to precipitation mode, and some of the precipitation that you saw in clear mode will actually disappear in precipitation mode. Clear air mode is used to pick up the very lightest stuff so it does not sneak up on them. Then once they know there is rain they switch it to the less sensitive precipitation mode. BTW, IMC Does not mean that it is raining, only that visibility is reduced by either clouds or fog or precipitation to the extent you can no longer fly in visual conditions due to Visibility Being restricted to the point that qualifies as instrument conditions.
@BaronPilot4 жыл бұрын
David Homan if I thought about it I would have shown my airborne radar. On many occasions it has shown returns in front of me when next rad does not. Again I think it’s a great tool. Just not one designed for storm penetration.
@davidhoman38074 жыл бұрын
Baron Pilot : then there is the danger of attenuation. Let’s say your Radar detects a cell from right in front of you extending 60 miles ahead of you, when in fact the cell actually continues on for another 40 miles.The density of rain in the first 60 prevents the radar from penetrating any further than that, so that’s another danger. Thanks for the videos!
@BaronPilot4 жыл бұрын
David Homan without getting technical, you can lower the gain to determine if the cell in front of you is creating a shadow and hiding a cell behind it. But in a GA airplane the simple answer is to avoid anything greater than yellow.

Thanks for the response to my incorrect remark questioning if you were under maneuvering speed. I see you were near 156 going into the turbulence and then slowed further. You refreshed this in my mind so the next time I hit some good turbulence I'll instinctively check my airpeed and make any needed corrections to get below Va. Really enjoy the content and looking forward to starting my instrument rating soon. Interested in hearing more on the Aspen, I'm trying to decide if I would get two G5's or the Aspen if I upgrade, I like the larger screen area of the Aspen.

I was wondering when you was in that storm if you still had you radar scope. Then seen later on you pointed to it down by Kim's knee. Great flight as always guys. Thanks for bringing me along with you!
@derekheikes66854 жыл бұрын
I agree with the ADS-B latency and penetrating weather, however, just because it showed you clear of the precip doesn't mean you were clear of the clouds. Radar, regardless of it being on-board wx radar, or ADS-B nexrad, only shows water droplets. If the moisture in the cloud isn't made up of droplets big enough to reflect the radar beam, they won't show. So you could be in IMC, but clear of any precip column big enough to show on radar. Any part of CBs can be bumpy as hell, as you saw, regardless of whether you're in the wet core of the storm. That's why you want to avoid overhanging anvils, and getting into the tops of storms like that in a jet, even if your radar isn't showing any returns at your altitude. And you're lucky, your C-III still works. Mine has completely gone t.u. When the 960 comes in, we're pulling the vacuum pumps and standby AI since the G5 HSI functions as a backup to the G5 AI.
@BaronPilot4 жыл бұрын
I agree ads-b does not show clouds only shows precipitation. If you look closely when I cut to the front window shot you will see we were in precipitation.
@derekheikes66854 жыл бұрын
@@BaronPilot it's hard to see on my phone, but I wasn't pointing it out to hammer you. There have been a lot of conversations online where people are talking about pulling working radar out of their plane because they have ADS-B and Nexrad. It seems a lot of people don't get how the whole thing works, especially newer pilots. Automation dependency can end up occurring in GA with folks learning now like Kim, and my wife, who have never flown without GPS, and can rely heavily on this technology. As you showed, ADS-B weather can be a great tool, and big picture/situational awareness improvement, but we can still get our butt kicked by mother nature, even if all the tools we have at our fingertips look good to go. That's the only reason I made the point.
@BaronPilot4 жыл бұрын
Derek Heikes no worries I didn’t take it that way. I would never pull out my radar for ads-b weather. One summer in Florida and you quickly discover how far off ads-b can be. You will love the 960. If I didn’t have boots I would gladly remove my vacuum system. Replacing the CIII is on my future list too. One step at a time.
