I saw a movie once which started with that line... Lets just say, things turned out alright for Mr Schmidt...

Many petrol stations in France (and in the EU) appear shut (for all intent and purpose they are) but the pumps are automated and will take cards. It was Bastille Day 2012 everywhere was shut and it took me half a dozen gas stations before I figured this out. This was day 1 of a 3 month solo 30K mile round trip to Mongolia & Siberia. Imagine it, I drive into more that half a dozen petrol stations, running on fumes, only to see me leave whilst cursing the french because they were shut. Every time me knowing the pumps were automated and available all along. I carried spare fuel for emergencies in the wilderness but I ended up using it on day 1 in France because I was a dumb ass, LOL. Can't wait to see more.

no that IS an epic ride :)

In France many car drivers will happily put your fuel on their debit/credit card, you then just give em cash :)

I've been enjoying watching them again too.

It's the editing. These videos are very well edited, so they tell a story. And because they tell a story you can watch them over and over. "Daddy, tell me the story again about the time...."

Baron, take a trip through Norway all the way to Lapland, Finland past Sweden. I guarantee the sights will be amazing. :)
@Xerdoz10 жыл бұрын
Why the hell anyone would want to do that? It's too cold, too expensive and scenery is about the same as in Siberia. Well the Norwegian side is quite nice 2 weeks in a year when it's not freezing cold and miserable.
@Ta3kno10 жыл бұрын
Too cold? During summer 15-30 celcius degrees warm if you don't go through the mountain tops in Norway...Expensive? Since when was travelling "cheap" in Europe? And if you think Scandinavian scenery looks like Siberia then maybe you should go see an optician.
@cisium11846 жыл бұрын
Dood. Norway looks nothing like Siberia.

Another lovely video. I'm glad that you appreciated the attitude of our drivers toward motorcyclists.
@Schaaf11 жыл бұрын
nice one! I guess you're right about the more enthusiastic cheers and waves from French (Italian, German, Czech, Slovenian and Austrian as well) bikers but you shouldn't forget that you were riding in March, right? There usually aren't that many bikers around with outside temperatures like that. That's why you get even more excited when you see another biker on the road. At least that's what it is like here in Austria!
@jochemvanl11 жыл бұрын
Also don't forget that we mainland Europeans ride on the right side of the road (which incidentally is also the correct side), so we can wave with our left hand.

Watching this takes me back to the first time 3 of us rode to the South of France in 2003, to ride some great roads around Toulon, Tende, and others around the Côte d'Azur etc, all those little towns no petrol stations open, and it didn't stop raining on the way back up the Route Napoleon, for a day, some very happy times.
@KrAzYDucati11 жыл бұрын
Amazing! We should take a leaf out of Europe's book on a lot of things... Sundays, Road Maintenance and retirement age. Cant wait for the next installment.

Very cool, I did a 2,000 mile trip this past summer and you're right about being in the open with just your bike is an amazing feeling! :)

ok Baron. I love 44th but I miss this "Baron humour". Watching this for the second time and it's great. Love your French accent. greetings from Lyon , France ;)

Ah yeah, I know that feeling whilst touring of just praying that you are going to make it to the next fuel stop. Amazing to see everything closed on a Sunday, takes me back to my childhood here in Australia where everything closed up for the weekend at noon on Saturday. Those French villages are so cool! Looking forward to the next vid!

I admire you for doing the whole trip using a map rather than a GPS/Sat Nav. If I was doing a trip of that scale, I would be stopping every 5 minutes to recheck the map! Another enjoyable episode, looking forward to the next!

Now then Mr Sausage Baron, I once rode 750 miles in one day and I nearly died. I was in northern Holland and rode down to my holiday cottage just north of Bergerac on my old R1150RT Beemer. I was so tired at the end of the ride I nearly fell off at traffic lights etc. Good video matey. When you said you were about 40 miles from Bergerac and went into that nice little town that was Verteillac which I drive through regularly. I live south west of Limoges now.

Well hello Mr Schmidt... Loving this series, making my winter bareable.
@gutterrashrides Жыл бұрын
Love this content, can't believe I didn't know about you before 44teeth (that being said i was still in highschool when this came out). For those who don't know yet, the bike wave is done in countries that are right-side-driving because your none throttle hand is on the oncoming side. In countries like England and Australia where we drive on the left, our throttle hand is on the oncoming side but it's not practical to let go of the throttle so you nod instead of wave.
@rikherlaar5 жыл бұрын
Solo bike tours are the best for a lot of reasons that I amost forgot about ...You reinspired me to take one on my own again after a couple years tagging along . French people are always quite okay towards bikers....gotta love em for that at least and that's why I keep coming back there.
@MrSparkyAprilia10 жыл бұрын
I toured around France on my old kawi and I agree the road surface is immense! I also noticed they dint put man hole covers on corners! I also got cauhht out not being able to buy petrol on a Sunday and had to stay in some run down horrible motel until the next day!

The way the French bikers say hi, is like the standard way of greeting other bikers in France, Belgium and Germany :) I did a journey too this year with my dad's yamaha xt660x, 3 days to France, visiting some first world war monuments (:

Ah the happy petrol station dance! Isn't it great? The feeling of running out of petrol in a foreign country is nightmarish. The feeling of seeing that big neon sign is then so gratifying :)

Baron, glad you enjoyed your trip through France. Give a sign to other bikers is quite a standard in France, but it's less true around big towns like Paris, where bike is more like a necessity... or maybe, it's because it's much more dangerous to take a hand away from the handlebar around there... As you say, it's really hard to run at reasonable speed, because our roads are usually very nice coated... (is that good english ?) Très bon choix d'hébergement ! Félicitations.
