Barranco de Badajoz and the legend of the girl with the pears.
The legend of the Niña de las Peras places us in the years 1890 and 1910. The girl was sent by her parents to the ravine to pick fruit, but she disappeared without a trace. Many were the efforts to find her without positive result. Decades later, the girl appeared with the same appearance as when she disappeared. To everyone's amazement, she reported that she fell asleep at the foot of a pear tree and when she woke up she found a being dressed in white who led her to a cave. They went down some stairs and met other beings just like the one who accompanied her. She chatted with them for a couple of minutes and went back to her house, afraid of how impatient her mother might be. What had been minutes to her were actually thirty years. And she returned with the same age and with the same clothes. Its name comes from the Castilian conqueror Juan de Badajoz, who received land in this area after the conquest of the island at the end of the 15th century.
The Guanche aborigines called this area Chamoco, a term that has continued to be used by the natives of the place.
The ravine is a tributary of the Barranco del Agua, located at the southern end of the Güímar valley. It starts at 1,852 meters above sea level in the Dorsal Mountain Range of the island near the top of Izaña, and flows into the Barranco del Agua at 152 meters above sea level in the area known as Los Llanos. It runs for almost ten kilometers, receiving the contribution of numerous ravines that descend from the Ladera de Güímar.
During part of the path of the ravine, it becomes a real canyon, with vertical walls on both sides.
The most significant prehistoric vestige found in this area, thus demonstrating the aboriginal activity of the place, is the Cueva del Cañizo; which is 100 m high, approximately, in the middle of the road and on the left wall of the ravine that owes its name to the twelve rods of juniper wood, which are placed on the roof of it; those that can be seen from the bed of the ravine. In addition, several Guanche mummies have been found here, so that the place was an aboriginal burial area and, today, an important place in archaeological sites.
Eight filter galleries have been excavated on the slopes of the ravine that supply water to the population of the island. From here the so-called Canal de Araya starts, which leads the water from the Barranco de Badajoz to the metropolitan area of Tenerife, supplying the the municipalities of Güímar, Arafo, Candelaria, El Rosario, San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and being used by the population as well as by industries and businesses.
In the lower part of the channel there are several quarries for the extraction of aggregates that have been exploited since the seventies and are involved in legal proceedings for their alleged irregular exploitation.
The upper part of the channel is within the protected natural spaces of the Corona Forestal Natural Park and the Seven Lomas Protected Landscape.

Lástima no se conserve nuestro patrimonio histórico. Habría que integrar ese motor en el medio donde se encuentra. Forma parte del todo en el Barranco. Saludos desde Mi Isla.
