When you bolt the damper on, you can turn the rod inside the damper and remove rod and damper. You can reach inside the damper hole and tighten the bolts without having to reach all the way from the end. I know this is a year after the video but maybe it will help someone doing this by themselves.

Hi, thanks for watching and the helpful comment. Absolutely correct, I’ve just built my second one and did exactly that. I learnt a few things about hi temp paint on the 2nd build. I’ll edit the build video in the future, but there is a #Short’s video of the paint failing in my collection.

When I built my barrel stove I found you can turn the rod or handle and slide it out of the damper yo gain better axess to the top of the barrel when bolting up the chimmey pipe.

exactly what I found once I had completed the task, but late then though. 😁 Removing the damper makes installation much easier.

Make sure you have the big hole at the bottom side of the barrel. Use a two inch gas fitting pipe into it for air.

The damper on in the flue is a joke. It gets so hot you burn you fingers trying to adjust it. Put it in pipe about a foot or more above the stove in the flue pipe instead. You'll be glad you did. And try to one of the barrels with the removeable lid. They are thicker and it makes it easier to put all the bolts in for one, and it makes it so much nicer install a grate and cleanout the ashes by removing the whole front.

Hi thanks for commenting. The damper is in the location as per the barrel stove kit, the handle does get hot but nothing a gloved hand cannot manage. Maybe next time I'll change its location, but I have to say I rarely use the damper anyway. My next barrel stove used a thicker barrel but not one with a lid. Sounds like a good idea being able to remove the front, it would also make adding a baffle easy too. How does the lid clamping band handle the heat?

You can put sand and firebrick in the bottom and against the back and it keeps the bottom from getting hot also put a fire grate in and it draws a little better because the air can get in under the fire

Thanks Michael, I do have sand in the bottom which works really well. I have a few other videos showing the hassle I had with painting my next build, but I have finally found a solution, a true high temp paint from Scandia. I have been looking for a grate for a while, I’ll keep looking or build one from reo. Thanks for watching.

The big hole in front should have been on the bottom with a 2" small pipe for more air. And the bottom should be lined with bricks.

Hi, thanks for watching. I have lined the bottom with sand which works really well. I have modified the door clamp to allow me to have the door locked partially open to allow more air in if needed. I built a second one recently and it’s in use in the shed. It works so well at heating the shed.

Awesome job! I’m building mine now and I’m on the flue collar now. My flue collar doesn’t fit flush anyway I place it. Did you have this issue? If so, how did you combat the issue? I believe it’s going to fit tight around the flue he, but like I said, the bolt on area won’t sit flush in the barrel.
@TheRuralProject
@TheRuralProject 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Mine was not flush either. I had maybe a 6mm gap (1/4” ),, but once the hole in the barrel was cut and the bolts inserted it all pulled into place. If you still have a tiny gap it won’t matter, once the flue starts drawing, smoke won’t escape through a tiny gap Hope this helps.

A couple pf people have mentioned i should put in a grate to lift the wood and let the air circulate better. That might be another project to do, bit of bending and welding some reo. Thanks for watching

Hi, Jeremy thanks for watching. I've recently installed one in my shed, no build and install video on it yet, but I've done a couple of shorts about the "heat resistance" paint failing. My shed is tin walls and roof (colourbond corrugated metal). I set it away from the wall and installed a heat shield. For the roof I used 6in chimney flue with a 10" 2nd skin on the pipe as it penetrated the tin roof. That keep direct heat away from the roof and stops the roof paint from discolouring. To be extra safe you can use insulated triple skin flue, but I was advised from a local heater shop that double skin was enough. I'd suggest contacting a local installer, if its near any flammable material or the roof has flammable material consult an expert, its not worth the risk. Burn off all the paint outside though, have a few good fires in the open air before you bring it inside, the paint and some seals smoke like crazy for a while, you don't want to breath that in.

Here's a tip; Can you coat the inside and outside of the drum with fire-proof black paint? ;-) That way, the drum should last longer.
@TheRuralProject
@TheRuralProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yep. If I was to do it again I’d paint the outside, last longer and look better. It’s had a few years of outside use and I’m sure the steel is close to rusting through. Next time I’d also weld a plate on top, so it’s a small bbq or flat spot for a pan or kettle.

What happen with the paint of the barrel after turn it on?
@TheRuralProject
@TheRuralProject 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. There is also a follow up video if you watch the links. The paint burns off the first time you use it, it’s no problem, just keep and eye on it when you first use it as the paint may set on fire. If you get some paint left on after the first fire, you can just burn it off with a blow torch.
@TheRuralProject
@TheRuralProject 3 жыл бұрын
I forgot to say, if you want it to look really nice you can buy heat resistant paint and repaint it once all the normal paint has been removed
