No sealant around the components is needed? Would it be beneficial to put the door as high as possible? Will sand work well on the inside bottom? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to screw up and I have zero experience with wood heat. Thanks for the video.

I can't remember if it calls for sealant or not. Putting the door higher could be helpful. It's really a matter of preference. Would make scooping out ash a little more difficult. I did fire brick and sand in mine. Sand alone may work, but it can easily be scooted around as you throw in logs. I would be afraid that it would get too think and then the metal bottom would be exposed to extreme heat. That's why I like the fire bricks. They won't move once you have them all in there. I think put sand on top to lock them in. Actually I think I went with sand (for a level bottom) then bricks, then sand.

I ended up buying a small stainless steel tent stove, to play around with. I was surprised when I saw the cost of buying all the needed extras for a barrel stove, especially the pipes. Once I learn the ins and outs with wood burning, I plan on watching FB Marketplace for a used wood stove with the pipes included. Thanks for your reply. Best wishes.

You always leave the flue wide open?

Most the time. Then I shut the doors on front a decent amount.

Science, ha! You are funny! The barrel stove's what originally brought me to your channel, and I don't even remember why I thought I'd want to make a DIY one in the first place! Oh, and the yule log please, would watch that! The non-wearing of shades, though, feels like I'm watching a different person, haha.

I just got one, for $200 -_-, and sadly when we bought it it didnt have enough piping to go past our roof. So ive been dealing with smoldering flames and a smoke filled house 🤦🏻♀️ we're off grid so its our only source of heat and i haven't been able to keep a licking fire, when i close the door it smolders out, and i cant open it otherwise ALL the smoke comes out and into my 29ft cabin. Its gets below °30 in ky area and i need this to work. I cant drill theough my roof yet (dont have the tools or knowlege to not ruin my home! Nor the money to pay someone educated in it to do it) so the piping goes out my window but it doesnt go past my roof which is why i feel the smoke doesnt eacape the piping nor a flame staying alight bc theres no air coming through the piping to keep the flame going, but the pipe isn't sealed. So it has to be the fact tha mypipe doesnt go past my roof right?

How often do you need to remove ashes
@IndyFarmLife3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how often you use it, but it's not an everyday thing for sure. I let mine go quite a while before emptying. I prefer to have more of a bed to help protect the steel. (in addition to the sand and fire bricks)

@@IndyFarmLife thanks that’s helpful. Sand and firebrick is also really good, i hadn’t thought of that.
@IndyFarmLife3 жыл бұрын
@@donaldlalone7014 Yea, it helps protect the bottom. In most cases, the bottom doesn't even get very hot when a fire is going because of them/it.

Why do I get so much smoke in mine ??? Help please
@IndyFarmLife2 жыл бұрын
Make sure you have good dry wood. A hot fire with dry wood shouldn't smoke. Also make sure your flue doesn't have any blockages. When you first start the fire, leave the front door open for a good while so that fire can build up and build a good hot coal base.
