This was really well thought-out, thanks. Many of these points also apply to rejoining the workforce after a long absence - such as childbirth or illness, etc. Anyway, good work!

As a nikkei who lived in Japan for a while and now goes back and forth I can relate. Only now, Im in the opposite situation and trying to establish an identity back in tokyo with an expired japanese passport lol. Btw, did u happen to be in shibuya on 3/20 near the cross tower? Thought i recognized u.

The fact that a US citizen can't just come back easily is insane and scary. Wtf.

It’s mostly due to me sponsoring a non-American family member and bringing them to the US, I think, and they wanted to look closer at me. There are people who do fake marriages and get paid to bring over “spouses”. But yeah, it was a wtf moment for me when I’ve never been married before, filed taxes, haven’t done anything illegal and they still questioned me.

Wow, Barrett not so good situation upon returning but of course you lived most of your life in Japan. Work, Credit and even Social (Do you REALLY want to come back to USA? - DHS/Immigration or what dept. questioned you ) Hx. If you had a relative or someone maintaining something you left or charged cards here and there, I wonder if that would have worked. You even pay taxes back to US. Da hell. That proof you have ties to the US. Work aspect not so much, hopefully you are getting mileage out of the living resume.

It definitely made me feel unwanted haha. It’s not the best situation for me but something I just have to go through. My guess is it wouldn’t be a big deal if it was just me but if I’m sponsoring a family member as an American, they’re going to question my “American-ness”… Thanks!
