I think the critics are too harsh. All actors were excellent. The father was malevolent well played by Gielgud. Jones played Elizabeth well--dejected, discouraged but tough underneath, responded to love but needed help to get out from her domineering abusive father. Well played showing her conflicted emotions. Bill Travers as Browning was excellent, passionate, strong.

I’ve just watched this film on TCM The father is a right bastard, Sir john’s performance is 1st class.

The 1934 version is different than the 1957 version , not better. They are both good in their own way. Don't compare. Enjoy.
