Barrie Cadogan plays a 1959 Gibson Les Paul and talks guitar

We recently hooked up with Primal Scream, Little Barrie and The The guitarist Barrie Cadogan at Gibson's London HQ where he put a 1959 Gibson Les Paul through its paces. On loan for the day from a collector, this Burst was one of the very first to enter the UK and is a stunning instrument that you'll be able to find out more about in the magazine soon.

One of the best 50's LP demonstrations I've seen - many players will 'rawk out' and fawn all over the guitar. Barrie plays tastefully and dynamically, exploring the sounds that the guitar has to offer.

This is the way a 'Burst is meant to be played. They really aren't hard rock instruments like most modern Les Paul-style guitars. Vintage/custom shop Gibsons are much cleaner and possess much more clarity. If played right they have far more nuance than even a Strat.

@@Dagger_323 very much like a fatter/thicker sounding Tele. Relatively low output pickups and not a darker/muddy sound too often attached to later years when high gain became in vogue, even in the neck position it still retains clarity and note separation, single coilesque, but more full sounding. To me, that's the ideal LP sound. Suitably Bright, with midrange honk and added girth over a single coil. The '58 reissue I have fits that bill very well. It's like my Tele's big brother, in many ways.

Check his other video on Guitar with his 1962 ES-330 if you have not done it. What an elegant player (my personal favorite). I bought a 2018 ES-330 reissue and an epiphone valve junior to try to emulate that tone. I have never managed to get anywhere close. I’ve really learnt a lot from his playing.

The amazing thing for me is how Barrie gets right on the inside of every style he demos. As usual, no pedals, nothing but the amp, the guitar and his touch. Brilliant how his enthusiasm for the guitar warmed his playing. Loved the rock stuff at the end.

Consider that they only made 1,500 of them; consider that most of the initiated guitar players in the 60's and 70's played them (and traded them around), and as a result of that they're an integral part of the sound and look of popular music from then (and onward), consider now that probably 3 generations of guitar players have grown up on that music. That explains the sky-high price, even when compared with other instruments of similar age. If you ever get the chance to play one, you'll see. Nothing comes close, but there are some damn nice imitators from the last 30 or so years to now - and Gibson is not one of them, haha.

@@TheBarroomHero321 interesting. After I received your Informative message, I went to a boutique guitar shop and played both; an original and and a custom copy ( R9 ). I was impressed by both, there was little difference between the custom shop copy and the original. However, the original had sustain that lasted for hours and was acoustically louder then the copy. Both wonderful guitars.

@@TheBarroomHero321 The sound of a vintage 'Burst is difficult to achieve, but not unobtainable if you know what to get. A current Gibson Custom Shop LP from this year's line (2019) is literally the closest Gibson has come since the originals. I'm aware that's a vastly overused tagline but in this case it is true. Prior to this year's line Gibson was still wax potting the pickups and using inferior wire, incorrect taper CTS pots and cheap Mylar "bumblebee" capacitors. The 2019 stuff all has unpotted Custom Buckers, superior wire, vintage audio taper low-tolerance CTS pots and real PIO Luxe Bumblebee reissue caps. I've played a couple and was amazed at the difference, but at the same time was not surprised given the fact that the stock electronics this year are essentially the same caliber as the upgrades most people were doing to these guitars in year's past to achieve the sound of the old ones. Only difference is now Gibson is putting these in stock so the mods aren't necessary. However, slap in some Throbak PAF clones (literally the closest you can get to a real PAF, bar none), REAL vintage NOS Centralab pots (which in my experience make up 50% of the original guitars' nuances and tonal response, and NO modern pot matches them), and real '50s-'60s Sprague bumblebee caps, and you're nailing the sound. I got a hold of a set of NOS Centralabs from the early '70s off of eBay (which are identical to the '50s Centralabs but with the exception of being vastly more affordable) and slapped them in my Historic Reissue, as well as the other parts I mentioned, and holy COW what a difference. _Nothing_ made today in terms of electronics is comparable to the old stuff.

Paul Raymond played on my late friend Danny Kirwan’s first solo album post Fleetwood Mac “Second Chapter”. Obviously a huge "Hats off" to Barry Cadogan for his "Hear my train a comin'" and some wonderful pickin' through a number of genres. And don't you just WANT one of those geetars? And what he has to say about its history, the wear on it, that it's not been handed around the world by a bunch of collectors? That's beautiful. Fear not, gang! I too have a Gibson Les Paul! It's a 2018 Tribute Gold Top cheapo that comes in a gig bag, no body or fingerboard binding and a lot of the hand-work to finish the fret ends just - hasn't been done. Made in USA to a severe price, £800.00 to me bran' noo but IS IT ANY GOOD? Well - I WON'T GIVE IT TO YOU! Well - it is good! I had my favourite guitar guys do the fret ends (Richmond Guitar Repairs, UK if you must know) because I knew they'd do it better than me. The p/ups I changed myself, taking out the less-than-inspiring 490 and 498s (but some like them) and banging in some sooper dooper and very pricy Wizz PAFs, the best PAFs I know of anywhere (made by obssessive/compulsive authenticity freaks in Croatia), and changed the tone capacitors. And it's GOOD, all the way from 1 to 11, smoky, sweet, biting, the whole thing. Just like Mr Cadogan shows us, those knobs and switches are SO worth exploring and paying attention to - it's a musical thing designed before anyone wanted gain and you have to be in those areas to figure out if the guitar has a voice or not - gain is great but......that's for later. Play with the volume way down to check it out, if it's good there in the "clean/semi clean" areas it will sing with filth, no trouble at all. A little blues, a little jazz, a little soul...... listen to the air in those unpotted Alnico p/ups! Stormy Monday in a tiny, sweat-ridden dive? "Since I've been loving you" with that huge surprise hanging on moving a switch? No prob. Not just old, rare Pauls - any guitar in any store. So, YES, you can still get a really, really proper-good Les Paul - unchambered one piece mahogany body, one piece neck, maple cap, grown-up-handsome as Harry and with enough change to sort out the P/ups you want which, for me, is those old, old things so you can hear the strings "ping"on the wood - then the bumble bees start to sing along and Beethoven turns in his grave. You have to pay attention to set ups like pick-up height etc and it isn't quite "Yours for a bag of chips" but you only need to buy it ONCE. Mr Cadogan speaks very inspirationally about the 60s - 70s music he discovered and the production of the time, the way Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield woke everyone up, revived a guitar that was languishing, tells us it was inspired by a "jazzer" of sorts long before we got "dirty", knows his history and plays with great feel - you can't buy it and if you've got it you still have to practice like f*ck to get it out there. Really good, hats off but don't let a bunch of trolls tell you different - you can get yourself a really, really good Les Paul if you want, something that sounds just like that and you can't put it down or put into words how "those sounds" make you feel when your girlfriend leaves you (that's all right, get another one) because she's sick of your non-stop noodling on the guitar and wants to marry a steady guy instead. AND.... If you are so pushed for cash that you can't afford that sweet Epiphone amp rig (or an AC30 or Watkins Westminster - as used by Keth Richards, back in the day), you could do worse than a Yamaha THR10 practice amp - then feed the heaphones "out" to a couple of self-powered monitors for home use and brilliant for playing tracks through the aux channel so that you can be Hendrix's rythym player for the day or either of the two THR100s for ear-bleed down the pub. Then you can flog your pedal board. Barry Cadogan, thank you. Lovely feel for that lovely guitar. Hats off.

I’ve been told McCormick’s failed following the 2008 finance crisis. I spent quite a bit of time in there as a kid - it was an amazing place where you could buy almost anything musical. It’s so sad it’s gone. It was a true musical landmark.

Hello Barrie. A good and interesting video. That's a lovely 59 Les Paul, should be worth some decent money too. I guess that makes you a member of "The 59 Club", an honour indeed. I think Les Paul's have a lovely, rich and sumptuous sound and tone. You are a good player, great technique with a nice, clean sound, to your playing. I also liked your other video, honouring the late, great Rory Gallagher and his 61 Strat, excellent work by you. I was born in 1961 and like the guitar, I'm showing my age with wear and tear too lol.
