Barrie . question... why would the rear brake discs need replacing on a 4 year old Tesla..... . . . a current post on a Tesla group asking why their rear brakes cost £1100 to replace as they are grooved. 21 reg ,long range Y I think. no mention of current mileage.
@ridbanner14073 күн бұрын
Brakes hardly get used due to regen. Then the callipers stick and the discs accrue rust. A sticky calliper will burn through a disc very quickly. There is a sweet spot for disc wear ,where they get used just enough to heat off collected water ,keep the callipers free and some EVs just don’t use them enough.
@AndyK.13 күн бұрын
Grooved discs aren’t much more expensive on ice cars. Even with calipers it shouldn’t cost that much.

@@ridbanner1407 I have owned sports cars most of my life. and tend to own cars for a long time. I dont remember replacing rear brake discs. (my memory is bad though). pads yes. My current car . A Holden 6.0lt V8. Needs its front discs replaced every 2 years or so. Averaging £250 per wheel. It has a lot of comparisons to the power and speed of a Tesla.. So why does the Tesla need new brakes on the back. Ive never heard of it before. Is it a Tesla thing that is never spoken of. Hence my asking Barrie. As he would have access to that info....
@15bit622 күн бұрын
@@STPOBB It's a corrosion problem, plain and simple. The regen on Teslas (and other EVs) is very strong and will bring you to a stop (one-pedal driving). Consequently you can genuinely drive for hundreds of miles without using the brakes. In winter especially, that means you don't clean off surface rust and the brake system never gets warm, so you can get quite a lot of rust build-up on the discs, and pitting. The brake calipers can also seize. On my Tesla i deliberately use the brakes all winter to avoid this, but it's something you have to do actively and most normal people don't. I also get the brakes stripped and lubed every year (which is normal where i live)
@STPOBB2 күн бұрын
@@15bit62 in my experience. most cars always used the front brakes. front brake bias. it stopped the rear from swinging out under heavy braking. Until ABS came out. you own a Tesla. does Tesla no longer use ABS. or is it a different form of or same thing with different name. ? Do you think the two ‘owner’ is some kind of tax/VAT swizz? As in, initial business gets the write downs, then moved on as vat qualifying sale for the next owner to presumably benefit somehow? Or maybe local import of sorts? There is absolutely no plausible reason for this nonsense from an end user point of view. I also feel like I’m missing something as to how someone or company (other than the OEM registration) is benefiting from all this. Just a thought…
@GT380man3 күн бұрын
The first dealer registers the vehicle even though it’s not sold. They get credited with a sale of an EV. Some cars are being first registered by the manufacturer, same motive. It’s cheating because they’re desperate to minimise ZEV mandate fines.
@SWLW4363 күн бұрын
@ thanks for the reply. I get that and totally agree… it’s where the second owner comes in that I’m a bit confused about. Chasing registrations is one thing, but who, what, why is there a second keeper? It’s obvs just an admin thing as the cars aren’t getting used.

Each EV comes with a free canister of copium.

It appears that you pick & choose the comments you respond to. You stated in a previous video that regen stops your brakes from working, I have asked 3 times to explain how that happens!

Just found this channel accidentally so don't have a horse in the proverbial, but did read a comment further up the section that explains this, if it helps. I can't give you an opinion because I'd never be seen dead in an EV therefore know nothing about them besides the fact that they are an environmental disaster.

Lack of use of the friction brake (because the recharge system is used instead) allows rust to build up on the discs and pistons to seize in the calipers.

EVs are only for certain people the big question is why EVs are changing owners so often were l do own a 1997 Toyota Hilux and l have owned the Hilux for five years fair enough l have had to do work on it nothing serious and for the money l have spent on it and the original purchase price of aud $1500 and the money l have spent on the Hilux I'd l was to sell the Hilux l would still be infront because l live in Australia were Toyota's absolutely rule and older Toyotas appreciate well my Hilux has appreciated by at least 200% you can't say that about EVs they deprecate a lot and my Hiluxes carbon footprint is gone

It's becoming clear to me that getting an accurate survey of this is very difficult. Anecdotal evidence like this is obviously looking at a very restricted dataset - people who are selling their cars, and a small number of them. The data is not corrected in any way for the total number of EVs on the road, nor is there a comparison to the percentage of ICE cars that get sold within a year. It's clearly going to be inaccurate. But i also see surveys saying that 90% of EV owners will buy another when they change, which also seems like total nonsense to me also, cos no product in the world gets that kind of satisfaction rate. As a secondary comment - i also don't agree with what you are saying, but that's no excuse to be offensively rude. As my grandma used to say: "If you've nothing nice to say, say nothing".

Barrie has half a century in the car trade. His inferences are reasonable. The EV shills are cheating and lying.

I recall a certain KZbinr who reviewed touring caravans, he used to use gas guzzling monster trucks to pull twin axle 6 birth caravans. Then he became an EV evangelist. He would go on and on about how good EVs were, and it wasn’t a problem towing touring caravans, the only issue was, he was now towing dog kennels on wheels..🙄🙄🙄

Mikey Mike do you actually believe what you have written? You are so ill informed, do you even drive an ice car?

@@jcfallows I’m right now, and it will get worse, I honestly hope that I will be wrong, and that I am embarrassed, I pray that you are right, happy new year 👍

There is no way Barrie is wrong. I will never buy an electric car for a multitude of reasons. I'd rather hang on to my old one till the end comes.

There's so many problems with evs. Sure it has its positives for those with a drive and the ability to charge at home, it might be directly better for pollution in built up areas other than that it fails. Volvo did a report in 2020 directly comparing a ice vs ev using the same model of car. This report included manufacturing cost regarding emissions and found that even if you used a green source of energy to charge your ev that it would talk 70,000 kilometres before a ev car becomes a greener product than the ice variant. On top of that, you have school holidays effecting charging ability when everyone escapes London for a vacation and on the off season most will charge from home so these charging points are unlikely to be unused for long periods of time, meaning that damage to charging stations will likely go un-noticed for long periods of time. Insurance for all cars are higher due to the fact that insurance in the UK is based on a pooling system where we all pay into a pot and the average repair has gone up due to evs having to go back to original manufacturers as independents can't work on them. When they catch a light water cannot be used to put them out. They are heavier and damaging the roads more than there ice counter parts.... which is kinda annoying seeing as they have reduce tax rates. Oh and of course all the modern systems are in these vehicles so now these companies can lose your data or possible spy on you....Just like your phone. So yeah wonderful peice of machinery.
