Art and form indeed - Voisin made some of the most eccentric, sculpturally beautiful automobiles of all time - the Aerodyne especially is nothing short of high art. Undeniably a masterpiece.

In 1961, my late father bought a ( French ) 1930 Rochet-Schneider 26cv, a Paris Salon show chassis with the most beautiful saloon coachwork by Billeter & Cartier of Lyon.Registered in the UK, it had the owner's villa label on the dashboard in Cannes.With it's enormous Marchal fork mounted headlamps and one of the most equisite and comprehensive set of Jaeger-Le- Coultre instruments it was a site to behold.Bought for £100 !.

And these were barely a scratch styling wise with the wild designs of this company. Voisin made some seriously wild cars that in later years would be considered custom rods. Cars with the body channeled so deep that the transmission stuck through the floor, giant headlights in chrome frames and mounts, crazy body designs and details. Stuff that would amaze even the most famous 60's car customizers. Beautiful and wild machines, so shocked the first time I saw one at the blackhawk museum, spent half an hour just looking at all the details.

Gabriel Voisin certainly designed some distinctive cars - the bracing from the bonnet across to the mudguards made Voisins easily recognisable. It is also interesting how Voisin went from producing luxury cars in France before WW2 to producing microcars in Spain after WW2.
@bennyhannover93616 жыл бұрын
Originally Gabriel Voisin is one of the early pioneers in aircraft construction parallel with alikes as Louis Blériot and the brothers Maurice and Henri Farman. The Cars are only a side product of the aerodynamic thinking of him, as after WW1 there was need of a new field for his company that was also connected to the Aero Engine Company Gnome- Rhone which was equipping many french military aeroplanes in the 20s and 30s. This connection between aeroplane and car can be compared with Rolls-Royce , Hispano- Suiza, Isotta-Fraschini, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and BMW which were also active on both fields

Read somewhere, that the 1929 Avion Voisin Scirrocco Stilletto was all aluminum, except for certain parts. Came with an elctro-magnetic clutch transmission. And, was the first car to have "the Hump" in the middle of the floor, for the driveshaft and all, to get to the back of the car. Saw two go up for sale on one of those TV auction shows a few manths back. They both went for around $500,000, I do believe.

An Aerodyne featured in the film Sahara back in 2006, I spoke to the guy that fixed it up for the film and between us we couldn't work out what it was, it originated in Russia before being used as a prop so we assumed it was Russian. How wrong we were, it was already missing it's roof at that time so we could be forgiven. I wonder what became of it?

I can see why that Aerodyne won "Best of Show" at both this show and Pebble. That interior is just STUNNING. That "Art Deco" inspired cloth interior is one of the most beautiful car interiors of all time. Was that original? Or was it added at the meticulous "better than brand new" restoration of the car? I think even Voison himself would be impressed.
@RideswithChuck10 жыл бұрын
It is my understanding that the interior is identical to the original.
@joevs2100110 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chuck. That Aerodyne is a true work of art for sure. I'll saw a couple other videos of it on youtube. The "port holes" on top and that wonderous top "sliding" up and down. That top alone was an incredible technological wonder in that day and age. Do you know how many of those Aerodyne's were produced in total? I was just wondering. Who commissioned the first car? Weren't these cars usually commissioned by someone (usually a very wealthy person or Royal of some type)? Then the coachbuilder would take a chasis created by Voisin and build the beautiful bodies around the chasis? Which made every single car just a little bit different based on what the customer actually wanted in options. I can only imagine standing on the side of a road or street in Paris or somewhere in France as this Voisin passed by in the 1930's. I would imagine people stood in awe seeing a machine of this quality. And that's the crazy thing, PEOPLE USED THESE CARS! Back in the day when you had a car commissioned, it was normally used on a frequent basis as transportation. It was a "status symbol" and showed their wealth as their driver pulled up to the front of their business or a fancy restaurant and out popped the owner in his/her suit or dress ready for an oppulent evening on the town. Oh yeah, those were truly the GLORY DAYS of motoring.
@MrDaiseymay10 жыл бұрын
joevs21001 I agree with all you say. The coach builders ART was at it's most creative and beautiful during this--''Art Deco'' period. With great irony--this too, was a period of great poverty, and of course --much worse to come--WAR ! which put an end to extravagance in the car industry as elsewhere.
@joevs2100110 жыл бұрын
Philip Croft Very true. The 20's and 30's were the all time height of automotive building and creativity. Granted, nothing can compare with the computer driven, anti-lock this, ipod that, of todays modern car. But just the artistry that went into making a car back then was incredible. Each car could be completely different depending on what the owner specified the coach builder to put into the body. I would have loved to been around back then to see these masterpieces cruising by. Could you imagine? I bet the average "joe" so to speak on the side of the road used to seeing a few Model "T"'s every so often on the still mostly dirt roads stood there in awe as something like this drove by. It was probably the Space Shuttle of that time period.

Very strange and ugly feature is that strut used to brace the front guards/fenders, why did he do that? but the french are known for doing quirky things with car design, also most unusual for a continental car is that those shown were in RHD?
@dale4099 жыл бұрын
Most high quality French cars of the period were RHD as standard, I am not sure why but It may have allowed the chauffeur to exit quickly and open the rear door for the passenger to exit safely onto the footpath.

@seancostello3879 жыл бұрын
+john brown That brace was used because the front fenders were so light that they needed to be supported by the radiator. They are not standard round tubing either- they have the profile of an airfoil! Nice feature since Gabriel Voisin got his start making aircraft.
