Guitarist Tariq Harb performs Vals No. 4, Op. 8 by Agustín Barrios Mangoré.
The romantic waltz, "Vals No. 4", also called Vals Brillante, was composed in Paraguay in 1923. Only three of Barrios' works carry opus numbers: Waltzes Nos. 3 and 4 of Opus 8 (which supposedly included a total of six waltzes) and Preludio, Opus 5, No. 1. This tuneful waltz is one of Barrios' most frequently played pieces and features an extended passage using the technique of campanella (playing stopped strings against a repeated pedal note on an open string). Barrios was influenced by nineteenth century romanticism (he greatly admired Chopin and Beethoven) and composed hundreds of piece in the romantic, baroque, and in his own folkloric style for solo guitar and for guitar duets. He is widely regarded as one of the most prolific composers who ever wrote for the instrument.
I hope you enjoy this performance! Please subscribe to stay posted on upcoming videos and unique content. Thank you!
Guitar: Douglass Scott - solid spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides
Strings: Savarez Alliance basses and Augustine Regal trebles
Microphone: Rode NT1-A

I just have to say...I've been listening to this rendition over and over and I've listened to many other great versions by other great players! This is my favorite!! I love the way you let the song breathe and express every note so the listener can clearly hear the beautiful composition. This is the version I want to learn👍🏻

Stunning! How long does it take for you to learn a piece like this? Is it something you can just play by looking at the sheet music or does it take months of learning each little part and building it up?
@TeeHarb
@TeeHarb 4 жыл бұрын
For me a piece like this would take a couple of days to get the technique and general musical ideas down. But one has to live with it for a while to perform it convincingly. It's a matter of becoming the music and not about perfecting it.

I'm always the cermugeon, but I'd prefer much less embellishment and a more strict adherence to the music. I don't think classical is meant to have our own embellishments liberally laden throughout the music; it's meant to be used very sparingly. And when people do play like that, they get vastly more out of very simple embellishments than you can ever get when you're slowing down or speeding up at every turn. The turns are beautiful on their own, and they're planned out perfectly by the composer on the sheet most of the time. These composers had even more to offer then a series of notations and bars and time signatures. I'm not specifically picking on this guy; but I'm just saying that when someone holds back it always blows me away. Less is more.
